A bit of a dark mood and suspense here. Mark, Lord Gatwick, seems to be waiting for Lord Shayles to get his revenge on Mark. Then Angelica, driven by desperation, arrives and is determined to get Mark to marry her. Little does she know her foster-grandfather’s will has a stipulation to help. A rather intricate plot that kept me turning the pages.
The sixth book in The Silver Foxes of Westminster by Merry Farmer is a well written story that held my interest throughout. Lord Mark Gatwick and Angelica LeClair’s story has suspense, drama, danger, a very nasty man, and romance. A book I enjoyed reading. Lord Mark Gatwick has been looking for redemption and a painting for twenty five years. He’s associated himself with a true villain.
Angelica has traveled from America to England to fulfill her adopted stepfathers will. She gets nothing unless she marries Mark and then it’s only a share in his business that she helped run. She’s also the daughter of a former slave.
A great read with a much older man.

Appearances are often deceptive. Two people, both with a past best forgotten but really no way to do so, come together in this dark tale of revenge and striving for peace.
The past is threating to come back to life for Mark, the Earl of Gatwick. Having helped in sentencing a man to prison due to crimes he had witnessed, the blackguard is about to be released and knows he will seek vengeance on him. Mark feels trapped without many options.
But when fate, in the form of Angelica comes knocking at his door, he is stunned at who she is and what she wants. Angelica has found out that in order for her to inherit the money that was left to her, she had to travel to England and marry a distant cousin, who happens to be Mark! What? Yes, she grew up in Louisiana with many prejudices thrown her way and is determined to convince Mark to marry her.
Merry Farmer creates characters that almost speak to me with their emotions and the storyline is one that deals with several issues that are not often addressed in stories. Mark and Angelica both needed healing and as I turned the pages I could only hope they could find their way to a happy ending.
Do not miss the book and all in the Silver Foxes of Westminster series!

An engaging and refreshing read
Not the typical story that I always read in historical romance books, here, the heroine is the “hero” – a refreshing one for me. I love how the romance and mystery in this story developed, quite realistic I have to say. I can feel so many emotions in here. The character development is so perfect. And despite the fact that this is part of a series, this is definitely a standalone. Merry Farmer is becoming one of my favorites, and I will definitely read more stories in this series.

The author does a good job right at the start in setting a mood and a tone for the book. The hero, Mark, the Earl of Gatwick, is silently walking around his own home as if trying to vanish into the woodwork himself. Soon the author reveals some of Mark’s past. Apparently, when Mark was younger, he got in with the wrong crowd. He got involved with a man named Shayles whom Mark witnessed doing terrible things. Mark feels guilty because he didn’t say anything. Now some twenty years after a particularly heinous act, Mark helped get Shayles convicted of one crime. Unfortunately, this will not keep Shayles in prison for long; in fact, he’s due to be released in a month from the start of the book. Mark knows that Shayles will kill him once he is released. Shayles’s lawyer has even sent Mark a letter stating that Mark owes the villain twenty thousand pounds, and if this is not paid, Mark will be ruined by what Shayles will divulge. Under the power of these threats, Mark feels a bit like a dead man walking.
Immediately on the heels of the receipt of this letter, Marcus is surprised when there is a knock at the door. He never has visitors. This visitor is a young black woman from New Orleans named Angelica. Mark’s uncle had moved to the States and became her adopted grandfather. In the old man’s will, Angelica who will not get her inheritance unless she marries Mark.
The young woman is quite a spitfire and rather determined, unlike any woman Mark has known. He is definitely attracted to her, probably due in part to the monkish existence he has lived. Mark comes across as a sad, vulnerable, and sweet hero.
When Shayles’ finds out about this new woman in Mark’s life, she becomes a target as well. However, Shayles has not met a woman like her! She is unwilling to back down to his threat. It was fascinating to see her strength and the way that she was able to help Mark become a stronger and better man. There is definitely violence in this book, but it is contextual and not gratuitous.
The book has some of the common issues with grammar, punctuation, and spelling, but this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
This is a very unusual historical romance. Not only is it interracial, but the heroine is stronger than the hero. If you’re looking for something a little different in historical romance, this book may fill the bill.

While I have read some of the books in this series, I did not read the previous book which I believe featured a storyline regarding Gatwick and Shayles. That being said, I do not think you need to read that book to enjoy this one. I thought the explanation of what happened (at least inferred) was enough to know that Mark was just a victim of bullying. I am not usually drawn to beta heroes but Mark is someone you want to cuddle with just to alleviate his torments. Angelica is one bad-ass woman – if only every woman (then and now) would take steps to empower themselves. The interaction between Mark and Angelica was so sweet and tender. I loved the story and hope that you enjoy it also.

October Revenge
The Silver Foxes of Westminster book 6
by Merry Farmer
Finally we get the story of the very misunderstood Lord Mark Gatwick, is he a vilain or not?
Mark Gatwick has been Shayles shadow, after years of silently putting up with Shayles ridicule he’s finaly got his revenge and testified and now Shayles is in prison where he belongs!
He’s free to live life in peace, until Angelique LeClair shows up stating she’s his betrothed. Life for Mark got a whole lot more intresting!
Angelique LeClaire isn’t the typical young miss, she’s a force to be reckoned with, feisty, confident and doesn’t back down from a challenge. She’s also loyal to a fault and her loyalty and compassionate nature has Mark believing that he’s worthy of love.
This was the absolute best! Merry Farmer has woven an intricate plot full of angst and intrigue. Mark finally has redeemed himself, his story was tragic and he led a lonely life. He was a victim of emotional abuse, Shayles saw his vulnerability and loneliness and took advantage. Angelique was exactly what he needed. This was so nicely done, I loved the twist of the female character coming to the rescue of her man. I highly recommend reading the whole series. Although the can be read as a stand alone.
I recieved a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
An amazing story, not like anything I’ve read before.
Mark just stole my heart right from the start. He’s been dealt such a horrible hand, but he’s maintained his integrity – despite the cost – far longer than anyone could have asked of him. His nemesis has been publicly exposed, but not yet completely vanquished. Angelica shows up out of the blue, sent from his late great-uncle Miles and proving to be just the ally he needs to heal his heart and summon the strength to finish what needs finishing.
Angelica has been victimized before, and she’s not about to stand by and let herself – or Mark – be trampled on again. In order to secure her inheritance from Miles she has to marry Mark – a task that seems to be beyond what Mark is capable of, but his history proves to be no obstacle to our determined heroine.
Their marriage sets the stage for some very intense love scenes, but it’s not what you’d expect, not at first anyway. There’s a lot of deep-rooted emotional baggage that must be unpacked before the marriage can bear fruit. The journey this book traverses is gut-wrenching, cathartic, and utterly romantic. It’s a journey well worth taking, and it ends in a triumphant and sweetly satisfying HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Ah, what can we say about Mark, the quiet friend of the devious Shayles. For 25 years he has allowed himself to be a lapdog while quietly trying to make amends to some of the women abused by Shayles and his cronies. He lives in misery of the one he couldn’t save. When Angelica comes from America due to her adopted grandfather’s will in order to marry Mark he is dumbfounded. No matter how he tries to distance himself, the strong willed Angelica is there at every turn and she starts to break down his defenses. But with Shayles release from prison and his threat to kill Mark hanging in the balance, Mark must figure out a way to keep Angelica safe. But Angelica is not to be underestimated and Mark will soon put his demons to rest. Many surprises in this story. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Lord Mark Pearson, the Earl of Gatwick, has been known for years as the best friend of notorious villain Lord Theodore Shayles. For the past 25 years Mark has found himself under Shayles’ thumb and not known how to escape. Now he’s finally executed revenge on Shayles for a nightmarish event Shayles perpetrated over 20 years ago and which still haunts Mark. He hopes to finally attain the peace he’s longed for his entire life with Shayles now imprisoned but with him threatening Mark’s life upon his release, any peace seems likely to be short-lived.
Growing up in New Orleans as the daughter of a white woman and a black man, Angelica is no stranger to challenges. But even she is shocked to learn that in order to receive her inheritance from her adopted grandfather, one that will save her from penury, she must go to England and marry his great nephew, whom she’s never met. Angelica has learned to be wary of men, but she is stronger than most women and determined never to be helpless again. She will put her fears aside and focus on the future, which means persuading Mark to marry her.
Mark has barely even looked at a woman in nearly 25 years so he’s shocked and rather appalled by his body’s reaction to Angelica, but he’s also pleasantly surprised when she notices his art and doesn’t see him as Shayles’ lackey. He doesn’t want a wife but agrees to marry her in order to keep his home as per the stipulations of his great uncle’s will.
Angelica immediately recognizes that something is dreadfully wrong with Mark and is amazed by her genuine curiosity about him. When Shayles learns about Angelica, he threatens her in addition to his threats on Mark’s life and Mark must quickly find a way to leave his fears behind in order to protect the woman he’s rapidly fallen in love with.
Mark was a very different sort of hero. He got caught up in the wrong crowd at a young age when he was vulnerable after his father’s death and could never quite escape. He was much older an more vulnerable than the usual in this genre and Angelica was much stronger than is typical. It is she who brings Mark out of himself a bit and he begins to be overwhelmed by emotions. He’s what I would normally consider to be a weak hero and yet I liked him. We have a truly insane and quite formidable villain here, who could’ve been handled better by the hero, but the fact that our heroine is the first one willing to fight in defense of the hero makes this a unique story as well. The heroine essentially helps the hero become a man again and gives him a reason to fight.
The feelings between these two developed quite quickly, but it was believable still, especially given Mark’s lack of affection in his life and Angelica’s determination. I think the ending could’ve been a bit better in terms of some redemption for Mark, but it was still satisfying overall and an enjoyable read.
I voluntarily read a reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Angelica LeClair is the type of heroine I love….she can kick a**!! Having gone through a near rape situation, she’s learned to defend herself and she’s exactly what Lord Mark Gatwick needs in his life but little does he realize it when she first shows up on his doorstep telling him they need to marry!
Mark is a very different type of hero we usually see in historical romances, seeming very weak minded and afraid of his own shadow. Don’t worry, though, he does redeem himself:) My heart went out to him and everything he’s gone through since his father died when he was 18 years old and he got involved with the sadistic Lord Theodore Shayles.
Angelica helps him get his courage back and fight for what is rightly his, as well as slay the demons that are always hovering over him and as well make him realize that he has the right to be happy and be loved.
