To do list: Cow-tip the Minotaur. Cure a reptile dysfunction. My name is Nate Temple, and I’m secretly a wizard. I ride a foul-mouthed unicorn, I drink with Achilles, and I’m pals with the Four Horsemen. I’ve even cow-tipped the Minotaur. I understand the theory of following the rules…I’m just not very good at the application.Because rules were meant to be broken.Especially when I find out a … to be broken.
Especially when I find out a monster just murdered my parents. Now all I can hear is the sweet, soothing song of vengeance in my ears, playing on repeat.
But when shifter dragons come to town, I’m forced to step away from hunting down the scumbag murderer. Because I know the cure for a reptile dysfunction, and the dragons aren’t going to like it.
This fight soon opens up Pandora’s Box, and suddenly every flavor of supernatural thug is after me. The only way out of it—to save my city—is to murder my best friend.
I didn’t want, ask for, or start any of this. But I will finish it. It’s time I show St. Louis that magic is very, very real. And that an angry wizard is truly something to see—at least once in your life.
You know, right before he puts you and everyone you’ve ever met in the grave…

This is a crazy-fun read. It’s one of those books that grabs you right from the beginning and doesn’t let go. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
The story was OK, funny in places. I didn’t really like the main character, Nate Temple. He seemed so entitled and acted like it in a lot of places in the book. On the other hand, if I were wealthy and a top notch wizard, I guess I might feel entitled or just a bit better than everyone else too. The story and secondary characters were pretty good. Not sure if I’ll give the next book a chance or not, still thinking about it.
Fun introduction into the Temple-Verse. This book has a lot going on and throws the reader head first into the fictional St. Louis that Nate Temple inhabits. Plus…weredragons! Can’t go wrong with that!
The minotaur. A werewolf Dragons… Nate Temple might need more than magic to save his city.
Billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne… I mean Tony Stark… Sorry, I mean Nate Temple, lives in Saint. Louis, where he owns a bookstore named Plato’s Cave. The shop serves a very unique clientele who seek rare books that can’t be found in other, more common bookstores (no wonder Barnes and Noble is struggling).
When his parents are murdered, Nate’s simple life is thrown of course. As he investigates, a book client requests a rare, powerful tome that Nate doesn’t possess. To acquire it, he must confront the mythical minotaur, and that’s just the beginning.
Can Nate Temple, a powerful wizard, save his city from a dragon infestation?
Obsidian Son is the first novel in the Nate Temple, Urban Fantasy, helluva ride series. If you like narcissistic anti heroes–like Iron Man–and you’re a fan of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, then don’t miss this action-packed novel.
This is a great start to a great series and one I’ve ready many times! Pick it up, you won’t regret it!
This is the primary book in the Nate Temple Series!!! Step right up and run don’t walk into the Templeverse, the world of 3 series of books intertwined and imaginative with unforgettable characters, situations and alot of stuff you just do not see coming at you!!! Once I read this I had to burn through the next 9 books. One of my favorite authors, he has joined by go to for great, exciting and action packed reads!!
Shayne Silver’s Templeverse is full of amazing characters, humor, tragedy, action, and friendship. The first thing I said after reading this book was ‘ What the heck did I just read’. Then I immediately got book 2. You won t be disappointed.
Shayne Silvers (on a podcast) described his hero Nate Temple as “Tony Stark, but with magic.”
It’s accurate.
We mostly like Nate, though he sometimes gives us a reason to think he’s a bit of a jerk. And he’s filthy rich, smart, and good with magic.
This is a compelling story and a great start to a series.
An Entertaining, Snarkfest of Magic, Mayhem & Myths!!
(Read using Kindle Unlimited)
Nate Temple is newly orphaned. He’s a powerful & extremely rich wizard, as were his parents, in a world that doesn’t believe in myth & magic!! His best mate is Gunnar, an FBI Agent who is secretly a werewolf In the week after his Parent’s death he’s been contracted to find a old book. It leads him to the Minotaur of myth & legend, who is it’s current keeper/protector. It’s agreed they’ll duel for it in a few days They refer to people with magic as ‘Freaks’!
He meets his two besties at his book store, his true love & pride & joy, later that night for their monthly catch up. There’s a gate crasher of the deadly variety! She demands a book, Nate’s never even heard of it though & this sends her on a rampage!!
It becomes apparent that his city has a Dragon infestation & they’re murdering over this book! He joins Gunnar as an unofficial consultant, to aid in the investigation. He also discovers some devastating news about his Parent’s deaths & news he didn’t want regarding their Tech Company!!
Nate & his companions are funny, snarky and all working for the greater good for all of mankind!! He enjoys throwing his money & position in pompous people’s faces, rightly so too But being flawed just makes him & those around him even more likeable. Indie, a ‘Regular’ so non magical, is his romantic interest & seems like a total bad*ss, I hope we see her in action more as the books & their relationship hopefully progresses
This was a fast paced, kick a*s read. I clearly enjoyed the characters but I really liked where the world building was going too!! I can see me becoming an addict if the quality stays like this & Lord help me if it improves I can’t wait to download book #2
Miss Out at your peril

Shayne Silvers is just amazing! I absolutely love everything he writes and I definitely lose a lot of sleep.
This is the first Nate Temple book and I was sucked in by the first 3pages. Nate starts with practical jokes and keeps up a tirade of snarky wit throughout the story. Nate has problems and an as…complete character type as he’s meant to be. He’s not the best humanity has but he draws you in even when he’s repelling your ideals about what exactly makes a good person. I love this series and the dynasty of wordsmithing it spins out and inspires.
OH MY GOSH!!! THIS is an AMAZINGLY AWESOME beginning to an INCREDIBLE series!!!! Luckily I discovered the author and started with book 0 in the series and I am now on #4. Each one is a THRILL RIDE!!!!
Obsidian Son is like a love child between Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files and Kevin Hearn’s Iron Druid. A fun, fast-paced urban fantasy with high stakes and humor.
Silvers does a good job with descriptions, often using the mood of a setting to show character aspects. That said, the initial description of Nate’s store/home was a bit confusing and hard to picture. There was also a point later in the story where I lost all sense of time and became ungrounded from the story.
The characters are entertaining, sharing an irreverant humor I love. The dialogue between them, however, sometime blends together as all the characters have a nearly identical voice. Men, women, ancient beings, cops, kids, they all speak the same. This probably would have bothered me more if I didn’t enjoy that type of flippant voice so much. There were also a few sections that felt a little verbose and heavy-handed on the explanations.
The main character is a billionaire playboy named Nate Temple who’s often a misogynistic asshole. He has a classic upper class disregard for authority, a severe aversion to responsibility, and a devil may care attitude toward pretty much everything. He also has an eidetic memory and enjoys spouting quotes from classic literature. With his parents dead, Nate is forced to take on some responsibility for their work, inheriting more than just a company. There is also a romantic arc that tries to show Nate growing as a person and learning the value of deeper connections, but that felt a little forced to me, not really a natural progression. There are a couple sidekick characters that accompany Nate on his adventure and, while not as fully developed, they were a good match for Nate and a fun group to spend 300+ pages with.
The one thing that consistently annoyed me was the author’s habit of withholding information. He would flat out tell us Nate came to some conclusion, made some important discovery, etc., but would keep the actual information a secret despite us having full access to Nate’s thoughts and feelings otherwise. This sudden shut out felt jarring and left me frustrated as I had no way then of speculating alongside the character and forming my own opinions.
Overall, it was a fun, light read, though definitely targeted to men.
Random side note: How does an ancient tome fit in the back pocket of a pair of jeans?
Obsidian Son
Just finished Obsidian Son, and I am amazed. I am impressed. I bewildered and overjoyed!
Dragons battling a wizard and a werewolf, at a St Louis strip club near 13th & Washington?
A battle of magic in the St louis North Riverfront warehouse district?
A wizard’s mansion, west of Kirkwood?
A Minotaur that lives near St louis Resurrection Cemetary?
With a happy ending, where everyone gets laid?
I am proud of you.
Nice work. I’ll buy more.

A great first book. I have to agree with another review that said it’s a cross between Harry Dresden and Deadpool.
Warning!!!! Be prepared for addiction when you start this series. It’s a nonstop ride and can’t wait until you meet Carl
This is the start of an amazingly addictive series that is not to be missed! From the beginning, Shayne Silvers hooks you into his world and doesn’t let go. Throwing multiple myths and legends together, twists and turns abound, and this urban fantasy is a unique and unputdownable adventure.
This book really drew me in and got me hooked! The Temple Chronicles are all awesome books!
Obsidian Son is the 1st book in the Nate Temple series. This book introduces you to a world of “Freaks” that will have you begging for more. If you are looking for a perfect main character then this is NOT the book/series for you. However, if you are looking for an incredibly developed world with a flawed character that makes mistakes yet would move worlds for those he cares about then this book is perfect for you.
This is the one that drew me in. When Nate Temple snuck across a field and cow-tipped the Minotaur Asterion, I was hooked. I’ve followed along through all three Temple-verse series and enjoy every page of each book.
