To do list: Cow-tip the Minotaur. Cure a reptile dysfunction. My name is Nate Temple, and I’m secretly a wizard. I ride a foul-mouthed unicorn, I drink with Achilles, and I’m pals with the Four Horsemen. I’ve even cow-tipped the Minotaur. I understand the theory of following the rules…I’m just not very good at the application.Because rules were meant to be broken.Especially when I find out a … to be broken.
Especially when I find out a monster just murdered my parents. Now all I can hear is the sweet, soothing song of vengeance in my ears, playing on repeat.
But when shifter dragons come to town, I’m forced to step away from hunting down the scumbag murderer. Because I know the cure for a reptile dysfunction, and the dragons aren’t going to like it.
This fight soon opens up Pandora’s Box, and suddenly every flavor of supernatural thug is after me. The only way out of it—to save my city—is to murder my best friend.
I didn’t want, ask for, or start any of this. But I will finish it. It’s time I show St. Louis that magic is very, very real. And that an angry wizard is truly something to see—at least once in your life.
You know, right before he puts you and everyone you’ve ever met in the grave…

I’m surprised at the negative reviews here, I guess each to their own. I found this book kept my interest and it had humour, intrigue and adventure. I realise that Nate comes across as a self assured, over confident arse but that is part of the charm in this story.
I will definitely be reading more by this author, great story line, good depth of character and I love that there is some element of humour.
High-paced fun and full of snark!
Caution! First in series, Obsidian Son is additive! Shayne Silvers is a masterful creator of witty prose and twisted characters that will leave you astounded and begging for more. Don’t judge the main character,Nate Temple, too harshly: his transformation through this series is a must read. #TempleVerse
Like many other fans of the series, I was draw in by the tagline
A must read. I am so glad that I found Shayne and his great books!
Have had this on my Kindle for a while and just got around to reading it. Looking forward to the others in the series. If you like the Dresden series, you’d probably like this.
Loved it! Amazing array of characters and nonstop action. Witty and dark humor. All are available on Kindle Unlimiter as well
Excellent series couldn’t believe how much i laughed it was a mental ride and I couldn’t put it down. Very impressed vampires, werewolves and monsters, hilarious and suspenseful!
I loved this book and the Templeverse that it introduced me to! Shayne Silvers has built upon this quarky world with new surprizes in each new book!
It was ok. Lots of action, maybe too much. Clearly rounding up characters for the future books. Too many oddities, like just discovering his most beautiful girl in the world- assistant for 5 years – might be attractive. Normal people unaware of all the wizards, werewolves and dragons creating havoc all around them. Maybe this was intended as a young adult novel, and I just missed that.
You can tell from the first book that you’re in for a wild ride in a long entertaining series. The main character reminded me of a Dr. Strange or Iron Man type character and I loved that.
Awesome series written by a great author.
Tony Stark as a Wizard
Obsidian Son is the first book in the Temple Chronicles by Shane Silvers but in some ways feels like it should the eighth or ninth one. I don’t mean it should be a later book in the series because I felt the author left out a bunch of details that made you feel like you missed something. It was more due to the main character, Nate Temple, being a billionaire wizard who is powerful enough to defeat dragons and the immortal Minotaur from Greek mythology. An uber rich and powerful MC kind of makes you wonder how the series is going to grow from here.
I’d have liked the series to start five or so years earlier. Seeing Nate struggle to get his bookshop up running, building more tension between him and Indie (the main love interest of the book), find out more about why Nate decided to forgo getting into the successful family business, what caused the rift between him and his parents and having taking on much less powerful foes as he works out and improves his budding powers. I believe this would have been a much better starting point to the series.
Nate reminded me of Marvel’s Ironman Tony Stark in that he is wealthy, arrogant and prodigy but with magic instead of technology. I enjoyed the author’s prose, dialogue and scene setting. It was also a nice change to have dragons as the main adversary in an Urban Fantasy novel. The novel turned out to be fun read and I look forward to seeing where the series is going in later books.
It’s VERY ADDICTIVE. Don’t start reading you will get sucked into Nate Temple’s Universe before you know it. Shayne Silvers is a terrible person who will enchant you. It’s like he has the fix you crave and will do anything to get your hands on. Consider yourself warned. Myself I stumbled into it and don’t ever want to leave.
What I’ve actually read is the prequel to the Temple Chronicles, Fairy Tale, which introduces us to Nate, a wizard from an old respected family who will most likely follow his own path, full of adventures, even if he had the choice of not getting involved. Where would be the fun in that?
I can’t find the novella on BookBub but would recommend it in order to get an idea of what to expect. You can receive the free ebook by visiting the author’s official site.
The fact that our first glimpse of Nate’s world is at an auction is probably the very first thing I enjoyed about ‘Fairy Tail’ (+ The Brothers Grimm and Gunnar and Nate’s father, who disapproves but also understands where his son’s coming from) and then I had to read on to get to the bottom of why and who and how. 🙂

Nate Temple is a secret wizard. And a billionaire. Who goes cow-tipping with the Minotaur in his sights. When his parents are murdered and he’s attacked by dragons in his own bookstore he decides to go on the offensive. And that’s a bad thing. Because he’s uber-rich and all-powerful. Which are two of the reasons I gave up on this book. The other is choppy writing and this story is trying super hard to be the love child of Harry Dresden and Oliver Queen. Or Batman. But Batman’s parents died when he was a kid and Oliver’s died when he was an adult. Plus, Oliver owns his own business (a bar), much like Nate does with his bookstore. So, yeah, Oliver it is. In any case, this writing does nothing but set my teeth on edge. The premise is tremendously interesting and the world has potential, but the execution is very meh. I only set out to find this book because of another fictional series I started called Montague & Strong. The author tossed out the wizard in Chicago (obviously my beloved Dresden) and the wizard in St. Louis. I had no idea who that was, so I searched, and here I am. Disappointed. Oh, well. Moving on.
I’m several books into the Nate Temple series (think I’m at Book 7 now) and have actually started another connected series. Since I’m currently craving action-packed stories, the Nate Temple series has been perfect for me and there are lots of them. I have to pace myself because I find them really hard to put down once I’ve started. Nicely done, Mr. Silvers.
I just finished the entire series that Shayne Silvers currently has out (1-13). Obviously, it took a while…LOL
My Review:
I loved the series. The characters are great – which is my first draw to any book. The references to old mythology – all of them – is fantastic. The author twists them enough to be original, but he obviously did his homework.
Yes, Nate Temple is an arrogant ass. But the author also gives him a lot of depth with the internal dialog that’s constantly running in Nate’s mind. I think the perfect example is in Legend. This was probably my favorite of the entire series so far.
If you enjoy urban fantasy with a huge amount of action and sarcastic wit, the Nate Temple series is for you.

Ba Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha, Absolutely Hilarious! By Far One Of The Funniest Books I’ve Read In A Long Time. With Tonnes Of Laugh Out Loud Moments (just beware whilst sitting in a Doctors Surgeries (Thanks Shayne) where every head in the place turnt my way staring at me losing it at a certain scene as Nate yells “Sic Her Gunner” but I don’t want to ruin the scene for those who are yet to read it. No spoilers here!
I sat reading the entire book with a ‘Great Big Dopey Grin Plastered To My Mush The Whole Time’, eating up the snarky humour and wise-ass cracks this witty wizard fired off!
This is The first book I have read by author Shayne Silvers and had bought eight of his books before even reading one full page of his work! But It Definitely Will Not Be The Last I Buy Nor Read!
I want to read everything this man has written. I’m sure even his To-Do-Lists would be Award Winners jam packed full hilarious wise-ass humor, witty banter, faced paced action sequences, Critters, Creatures, Supernatural’s, Regulars, Magic, Power and Action to knock you off your feet with your socks still standing upright in your shoes!
Mr Silvers’ writing ability to create different & interesting creative credible characters is just beyond compare!
Whether they are first, secondary or even minor characters they all make you feel something. They’re lovable, charming, sophisticated sexy, suave and just a little bit naughty. And that’s just Nate!
He’s much like a modern day version of James Bond with his beautiful Bond Girl’s (& Gunner) hanging off his arms, but with powers to boot, tricks and, tools of the trade, high-tech gadgets and money to burn this so called ‘Playboy Bachelor has it all!
But at heart he’s just a bloke who tries to do the right thing, loves both Freaks, Regulars & his City St Louis, wanting to keep them all safe from harm.
Many characters have a cheeky streak, with the power to punch, great senses of humor, some quick witted with tongues as quick and sharp as razor blades.
These characters make you laugh and cry and are written in such a way,
you feel all they’re feeling & more, its almost as if you’re walking in their skin playing the role yourself!
Mr Silvers makes it easy to root for them even if they aren’t perfect or toe the straight white line as life is rarely black or white with many shades of grey inbetween.
You’ll fall in love with some, while others you’ll love to hate dreaming up all the gory & gruesome ways you’d love to see them come to a timely end, screaming in pain and dying in agony till the very end!
This is one series of books that should be made into a huge hit on the small screen, 1 Million Readers can’t be wrong can they If this 1st novel is anything to go by?
So C’mon Netflix, Amazon, Stan or Hulu, Showcase or Whomever just jump on board ‘The Templeverse Chronicles!’
What a shame it’s not part of the Marvel, Universe, boy would it be done right!
Just been in Shayne Silvers Den of Freaks Facebook page, and theses a post Talking of sperm,
Wow talk about perfect timing, I just finished Obsidian Son & there’s one particular scene…If you’ve read it you know the one I mean.
And while it wasn’t a sex scene, its a tiny taste of some of the greatest writing I’ve ever read and of hints and teases to come, leaving me lost in my imagination & wanting more! Kudos Maestro Silvers,
I hail thee!
You know that scene where Master Temple (and now I know why they call him ‘Master Temple’, nudge, nudge
wink wink), as he asks Tory to picture a stripper that comes out on stage & takes it all off immediately being fully nude (boring & uninspiring, leaving nothing to the imagination). *This is in my words*
Then asks Tory to imagine a fully clothed smoking hot female in a sexy tailored nurses outfit, hugging her curves in all the right places, strutting on stage swinging her hips in that way, that only woman can. She begins to sway, moving her body in time to the music while slowly caressing her body with one arm, her hand moving deliciously from one curve to the next from the top of her body to the bottom & back again.
She turns, facing away from the audience, locking eyes with you over one shoulder, watching you up through her bangs & lashes, very seductively, realing you in, as if you are the only 2 people left in the room.
The nurse wraps herself around the pole, holding tight, squeezing her thigh muscles holding her slender body securely in place & upright continuing to entice, slowly unzipping her inner side zip, revealling just a hint of glimpse of soft smooth, young, supple, tanned skin.
Pulling off a jaw dropping move as she lowers herself, coming to a rest at the base of the pole, rising up onto all fours, beginining to prowl, like a big cat stalking
her prey while seductively crawling towards you on hands & knees in that exotic way all dancers have,
giving & taking pleasure all the while holding you in place through your locked stare, daring you to not look away with promise and desire in her eyes…
This leaves Tory & an unsuspecting Gunner completely stunned, panting heavily, lost for words!
Boy I can’t wait to see what happens when I read an actual sex scene of his, if this was my reaction to this tease, what’s to come scares me, in case I’m reading while out!
I’m very grateful I wasn’t reading the above scene when recently I was in the doctor waiting rooms whilst reading this book, when another scene had me cacking myself so loud, all heads in the surgery turned my way in wonder, smiling when they saw I was reading a book!
One even asking “What are you reading?”, being a shameless plugger, I replied just a tad too loud, (for all to hear) Shayne Silver’s Fantasy Series of a Master Wizard & his assortment of Supernatural friends, protecting St Louis from the bad & depraved supernatural critters and creatures. Letting them know the series has many 5 reviews and his books always reaches the #1 spot of the Top 100 Fantasy Books on Amazon’s best seller list on release!
Anyway just imagine if it was that imaginative scene above I’m reading & not the funny one, while I’m sitting there suddenly lost for breathe and panting a little too heavy on the normal side!
Could havd been a tad embarrassing turning my face all shades of red & would have looked/sounded more like ‘That Scene’ in the café of ‘When Harry Met Sally’, you know the one, I’ll have what she’s having!
So looking forward to it all!
I Rate Obsidian Son
5 Out Of 5!
But My Review Just Doesn’t Do This Book Justice. I Don’t Know How Shayne Will Top This Book, But I Know There’s Many More To Come And Can Not Wait To Read The Next 3 Which I Have.
I bought this book from Amazon & this is my fair, honest and impartial review as always.

Silvers has a winner in his Nate Temple series! I am working my way through them all. None have disappointed yet!! I highly recommend Shayne Silvers if you like paranormal action series..,
I hated this book so much. I started keeping a list on my phone of all the words Shayne Silvers purported to know but grossly misused. It’s like he looked at the Dresden Files and said “this guy isn’t enough of an overstated male fantasy. Let’s make him way more one dimensional.”
