4.5* (better than just ‘good’!)
Intellectually disabled Benny Goodchild is in his early forties, works in a warehouse where he suffers taunts from colleagues, and lives alone. His life is humdrum indeed, but trouble starts when he starts doing gardening work for Olivia, who lives nearby. Then he gets the opportunity to earn some serious money—the sort of serious that he suspects might be illegal.
I was engrossed in this book all the way through, looking forward to getting back to it at each session. It’s written in the third person, with the deep point of view that allows the reader to see into Benny’s often rather confused mind. The story has been planned well, and I couldn’t work out what was going to happen, at all—it could have taken a number of different turns. Ms Storey has an easy, flowing writing style, and the characterisation is subtly but artfully developed, even for lesser characters.
I would have given it five stars if it wasn’t for a practical issue that didn’t convince me, but I do tend to read with an editor’s head on, and I doubt it would bother most people; if Amazon ratings had a ten star range, I’d give it eight. Overall, this is a highly entertaining book throughout which I was not tempted to skip-read once (which is something, for me!) and it comes with a definite recommendation. Buy it!
OBSESSION: A CRIME OF THE HEART is book 3 in the “Noir Nights” series. It is the first book I’ve read by this author and I will be reading the entire series.
I read this book as part of “Quirky Blind Date With a Book” and knew NOTHING about it going in. I hadn’t seen the cover or the blurb. This story held my attention from the very first word to the very last. I was entertained for the entire 1.5 hours it took me to read.
This short story is almost like a “Twilight Zone” episode. It is told perfectly, not a word is wasted yet is so descriptively written it was as if I was watching a TV Show.
I 100% recommend this book to everyone.

I have a hard time with stories about people with special needs because my oldest sone is extremely involved. So I had a difficult time whenever reading about the way Benny was taken advantage of as he tried to make his way through his life, and this was just one little piece. He had such a kind and trusting heart but the mind of a young boy, and those around him continuously found ways of exploiting that part of his character. He was easily influenced and managed to get in with the wrong set of people.
It wasn’t until he met Olivia, so much younger than his forty-year-old self, but he found camaraderie with her despite the odds. His relationship with his landlord is complicated, and his young mind can’t be convinced that he could have the same kind of relationship with this woman. Still, his love for her has him watching out for her and finding trouble where there wouldn’t be any if he didn’t have the body of an adult male.
I don’t want to give away any of the plot, so I’ll leave it at that. It’s an intricate story that has its innocent moments and some terribly sad moments along with those that made me smile. I don’t usually read this kind of story because of the content, but I chose it for a book group I belong to. The story has some sweet moments of innocence along with moments where that innocence is stolen, so it was a tough but good read for me.
This book is absolutely riveting. I started it after supper and finished it in the wee hours of the morning. Truly, I could not put it down. The main character, Benny, is odd and misguided and rather creepy. The writing is very skillful, with believable, well-developed characters. Highly recommended! I’m eagerly awaiting Ms. Storey’s next book. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
A mentally challenged man, a beautiful woman, and an abusive husband.
What could possible go wrong with that combination? This was the first book in the Noir Nights series that I have read and it kept me interested until the end. If wasn’t what I would call fast-paced but there was a lot going on with lots of twists and turns. Our main character Benny has been picked on all his life and it continues with his co-workers. His boss tries to look out for him, but he isn’t always paying attention. Enter the new girl on the block Olivia. Benny becomes obsessed but wants nothing more than to help Olivia and have her love him as much as he loves her. Next comes Olivia’s abusive soon to be ex husband and things just escalate! No spoilers, you’re just going to have to read this for yourself.
I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
