The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Words of Radiance, from epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson at the top of his game.In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.Dalinar Kholin’s Alethi armies won a … vengeance.
Dalinar Kholin’s Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.
Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar’s blood-soaked past and stand together–and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past–even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.

Another satisfying installment in the Stormlight Archive series, but perhaps not much more than that.
Sanderson continues to build his lush, enthralling world and delves deeper into the conflict-ridden landscape, but the narrative often followed characters I was less-enthusiastic about, while ignoring what was, in my opinion, the more compelling perspectives.
Definitely still worth the read if you’re already immersed in the series, but it didn’t inspire awe in me the way that The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance did.
One word: EPIC
With each weighty volume (1,000 pages +) of The Stormlight Archive, Sanderson sketches more of the world, fills in more details of the “map”, yet at the same time keeps the tension high and the reader on the edge of his seat. The magic of great epic fantasy is that no matter how long the book is, you wish it were longer.
Sanderson has that magic.
The world of Roshar simply gets richer. The characters continue to grow and evolve. And no matter which way the story seems to turn, I’m on board for more. In Oathbreaker, our heroes finally come together to brace the Big Bad Guy… Yet somehow, despite the thousands of pages between the beginning of the story and the end of the third book, I feel like we’ve only begun to see what’s ACTUALLY coming.
Long story short: I love this series. I’m a fan and will continue to avidly devour the adventures of Kaladin, Shallon and all the rest.
What a journey. Digesting this Stormlight Series takes time and thought but it’s so well worth it. Sanderson has some real jewels in Oathbringer. Events that made me set the book down for a bit. It gets highly emotional, but it’s a work of art, and a work of genius. Can’t wait for book 4 coming out soon!
The Stormlight Archive might be one of the best fantasy series to hit the shelves in years, and may be one of the best in decades to come. The world building is unlike any I have ever seen. Every moment feels so real.
This is the third book of a planned ten-book series, and there are years between each book, so we have a long way to go. Still, I’m in for the long haul. Brandon Sanderson Oathbringer
55 hours later, I have finished this book, wishing there was a release date for the next book.
The king and Dahlinar have hatched a daring plan to take back their city. A team of soldiers and Radiants travel to the city to open the Oathgate. However, conditions in the city are horrible and executing the plan will be extremely difficult.
Meanwhile, Dahlinar is working on forging alliances with the other kingdoms. It is not an easy task as his reputation as a general causes the others to fear it is a ploy to take over their lands.
Everything leads up to a desperate battle for survival at the end of the book.
Amazing over three thousand pages into the most incredible epic fantasy series ever!
After the first 2 books of this series I was eager for this conclusion. While satisfying in the way it brought so many story lines together and resolved plots, this book seemed to plod its way to the finale. If you have invested yourself in the first 2 books, definitely read this, but be prepared for the length and complexity, often with repetition as Sanderson grasps for a yarn that had been left out of the weave for a while.
Always a pleasure to read one of Brandon Sanderson’s works.
What I loved: The character and world-building of a Brandon Sanderson novel never let me down – even when characters are being frustrating (Shallon, get it together!) I still can’t put the book down, or stop cheering them on. If you haven’t started the Stormlight Archive series yet but have read some of his other books (cough, Warbreaker), you should. This book really begins to bring together his entire Cosmere and it is a delight to catch glimpses of characters I know and love from other books in this one.
I admit it, I love Sanderson and his world building. I love the characters. I love that they aren’t perfect and that they don’t always make the perfect choices. I live that he had true consequences and well, I love Witt.
The book was an awesome read with such a great storyline. I think the character development is amazing and watching each of them grow makes me happy. So many great storylines in one book, yet all of them coming together.
This isn’t the end of the world. There is more to come, so reading as a stand-alone is not really an option.
I don’t believe I can do another review of a book within this series justice any longer. I think this was an amazing third book within the Stormlight Archive and anything I say will just be continual gushing over how masterfully Sanderson creates his characters and weaves his worlds around them, so I digress. This series is amazing, and this book continues to uphold the standards of its predecessors.
If you like fantasy, this series should be on your list.
One of my favorite series of all time! I instantly was swept away with Brandon’s first book in the stormlight archive. He somehow captured a longing I didn’t even know I had–to drink in stormlight and soar through the air! His books are incredibly rich with plots and subplots and you dive deep into each character through every page. This book focuses on Dalinar, the appointed leader of the new radiants. His struggles with his own humanity and reconciling his inner demons are easy to identify with and make the resolution of the book that much stronger. Kudos to a wonderful book and can’t wait to read the next one in the series!
an Incredible doorstopper of a book
I’m absolutely in love with this series and the characters. I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next, and cheering for the characters to pull through. Now the long wait for book four… I appreciate that each book has something of an ending, so it makes the wait more bearable.
The Stormlight Archive has definitely made into my all time favorite fantasy series.
This book was wonderful, it was amazing read about Dalinar, he came so far… And Kaladin is such a great character can’t wait for more…
In this book one gets you understand that definitely not every thing is what it seems and tha history was misunderstood by our heroes, and important questions rise threatening to destroy the coalition that Dalinar worked so hard to make.
As for Shallan and Adolin they are a great couple…..
Counting the days for the next book, love this world created by Brandon Sanderson.
#3 in a great series. A must read. Can’t wait for #4.
Amazing, the best book series of our day.
As ever, Brandon Sanderson manages to create a world as real as the one in which we live. You care about the characters–like ’em, detest ’em, root for or against them, you care because they matter in the story, they add to the breath and the heartbeat of the world you are visiting.
It’s an epic fantasy. But it’s Brandon Sanderson. Still, I was skimming the highly developed descriptions to get to the action. And there were some narrators whose story I also skimmed. Sorry but y’all know my hardship with epic fantasy.
Still, this installment is as compelling as the second book. We’re introduced to new players and have killed off a few older ones. The plot thickens. Now that people are bonding with spren and speaking the radiant oaths, the magical abilities are doubling, tripling and skyrocketing.
I feared an unhappy ending, but Sanderson managed to twist things around. It wasn’t an “out of the blue” or “too convenient” twist, but I’m still wondering if there were enough clues to explain it beforehand. Probably in those pages I scanned.
I was a tad disappointed in Shallan at the beginning of this book, but she finally figures things out. I’m still not sure I “get” her, but I like her. I was glad to see the love triangle with Adolin, Shallan and Kaladin wasn’t prolonged. It didn’t really add much tension to the story.
The spren are getting more page time, and Sanderson’s done a great job of giving them unique personalities along with their magical abilities.
The last couple chapters set up the conflict to come in the next book, but still didn’t give this story a cliffhanger. (A good thing since it will be a couple years before the next installment is available.)
If you like Sanderson’s worldbuilding, you’ll enjoy this series. Much of the first book is dedicated to the setting (which is why it is my least favorite), and that world is expanding now. This series requires a serious time investment and isn’t for the tepid reader. However, if you want a medieval fantasy experience from the hands of a master storyteller, you won’t be sorry to invest a few dozen hours of your life for THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE.
