Jacky Leon isn’t someone who goes looking for trouble. She owns a bar, pays her taxes, and serves her drinks cold outside a small town in Texas. The fact that she’s a werecat is just something she’s had to live with. Alone in her territory, she’s lived a secretive life for six years: under the radar, avoiding her past and the baggage that comes with it.Trouble finds Jacky, though, in the form of … the form of an eleven year old girl and a werewolf turf war just outside her borders. Forced to honor an ancient treaty and the Laws of the supernatural world, Jacky swears an oath to protect Carey Everson, the human daughter of a local werewolf Alpha from Dallas.
When his enemies come after Jacky and her charge, she’s going to have to embrace the more dangerous side of who and what she is. She’s going to have to challenge the very Laws that govern her kind.
And nothing is going to stop her from honoring her word.

Jacky is a lone cat. She runs her bar and tries to keep out of anything shifter related. She was turned and has some resentment to her “father.” A young wolf shifter shows up, that is need of protections and Jacky ends up Oath sworn to protect her. Banet has created an interesting world, with complex rules/politics between the various shifter types, and interesting relationships with Jacky. I really, really liked Jacky. She can fight, but she is also logical and resilient. This story is more of an urban fantasy and there isn’t any romance in this book, although i believe their will be some in future books.
Good story that needs a little polishing with regards to the writing early on, felt a little stilted. Good action writing scenes. Interesting ending; looking forward to book 2.
So Jacky Leon is why I started reading books!! I love a great kick ass, smart ass female! This story jumps right in and just doesn’t stop. The plot is amazing and I LOVE my a sexy Alpha wolf and Heath fits that perfectly. I love who this story progressed and the ending was just right. Can’t wait to what’s next up for Jacky!!
I was so excited for this release. I absolutely adore Kristen Banet’s work. I was looking forward to something new from her that wasn’t in the RH field, and boy did this deliver. I love Jacky. I love how determined she is to uphold the laws. And how much she hates people for putting her into that position. I’ve read this book two times already and find new details each time that I enjoy.
I love the characters how well developed they are. That you are invested from the get-go. That this cat shifter doesn’t want her life and is trying to come to terms with it. I also loved that not everything was spelled out for us immediately and that she is reluctant to be a part of the supernatural world and to be what she is until she is forced to face it and protect a young girl. Then she is pulled in and holds on and fights to the death for justice and what is right and what it means to be what she is. It ignites her in a way that nothing else has, and with good reason.
I need more and I am not prepared to wait for the next book to see what happens. This book answers all of the major questions burning without resolving the overall arc and adding some new questions, but leaves you satisfied instead of enraged. I’m burning to know what happens to the Fae, the other Cats, the other Werewolves, etc. There is so much about this world we don’t know and yet so much we do know. I want all the knowledge and all the books now.
Absolutely LOVE Jacky. Her line of thought really resonates with me, and the story is exciting and intense. Love the new shifter world, and all the new rules and societies. I can’t wait to see what comes next for Jacky Leon.
I can’t put into words how much I adore and admire Jacky! She’s such a great character and anyone would be lucky to have her in their life! Love love love!
A strong start to a new series by Kristen Banet! I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read from her and this was no different! I loved the idea of oath sworn werecats and the plot in general. I’ve read a lot of shifter books, nevertheless, this one stood out and was still original, innovative, and well written. I really really liked the characters. Jacky was so relatable, strong but also vulnerable at times and a badass, she intrigued me and I look forward to learning more about her and her past. I loved the idea that werecats were so strong and superior to the werewolves, you don’t typically see it in books but I really liked it and it made the story very interesting and exciting especially since there was only one of Jacky against so many werewolves. I can’t wait to learn more about Heath, I love me some Alpha werewolves. It is a slow burn, but I think that was a great choice for this first book since there was so much action and it was our introduction to this new world Banet built. I’m excited to see what happens next for werecat Jacky and the other characters and see where Banet takes the story from here. I highly recommend this book!
What a fabulous book! “Oath Sworn” by Kristen Banet is the first book in a new urban fantasy series that stands shoulder to shoulder with books like Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series. It’s an excellent and original take on shifters and the supernatural world. Add in a strong heroine with conflict in her history and a child in jeopardy and the action (and emotional action) rockets along. I’m hooked! Book 2 now, please 🙂
Not the usual style for the author (No RH or sex of any kind) but it is written with her usual flare and skill.
Well written, with believable characters. Excellent world building. A clean, old style Urban fantasy. We’ll call it PG-13 for violence and some brief, mild flirting.
Jacky is a bar-owning werecat. Serving drinks to her regulars five days a week might be a lonely life, but it’s quiet and drama free. Until the 11-year-old daughter of the local werewolf Alpha shows up on her doorstep, crying and invoking the Duty. Jacky is now oath sworn to protect Carey with fang, claw and her life if necessary.
In a world where werewolves are the only supernatural that revealed themselves to humans, being discreet is crucial to a werecat. When the werewolf turf war invades Jacky’s territory it becomes even more difficult to do her Duty and stay hidden.
I enjoyed most of the characters in this book. Even if I didn’t like how some of them acted, I understood why they did. What I truly liked was how Jacky was the bigger person. When she was unfairly treated for things she had no part of, she still tried to be the mature one. I’m looking forward to getting to know the characters better and seeing how they interact going forward. I especially can’t wait to get to know more about Hasan.
If I had one complaint it would be that the book has lulls where not much is really going on. At one point it was just her walking around the city doing nothing but spreading her scent. I understand that it can’t be non-stop action but I felt like it was a missed opportunity. The time spent with the werewolves was mostly anticlimactic and a good time to add more insight into the animosity between werecats and werewolves. Luckily even these didn’t take too much away from the story. I was immersed for most of the book so I’d call it a win for me.
I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a paranormal urban fantasy with a strong female lead.
Urban Fantasy. Kickass Heroine… with real big teeth. In addition to bad guys doing bad things, this book also battles with the moral conundrum of when doing the the right thing means doing the wrong thing. This was a fresh story line with a prickly, kinda standoffish heroine who we get to see come out of her shell a bit. Without giving anything away, this was a solid opening act in the series and the best is yet to come.
