OMG I love this series! I’ve read all 4 books in this series in just 2 weeks! I could not put the books down. I am eagerly waiting for the next book in the series (at least I hope there is another book…?)
Sam Cheever has created yet another fun – adventurous – action packed – intrigue – magic filled cozy mystery!
Exciting Magical Adventure!
This is the first book I’ve read of the Reluctant Familiar series by Sam Cheever and I plan on reading the rest. An interesting and intriguing storyline filled with drama, fast paced action, fighting, suspense, twists and turns with a HEA. The wonderful combination of characters have Mages, Witches, Angels, Demons, Trolls all working together to save humankind from enslavement by an evil villain. Enjoy!
I received an arc copy and am happy to leave my honest review.
Wonderful characters who are back again, wonderful story that has plenty of action, and some scary adventure for LeeAnn. This is one of my favorite cozies and I’m hoping there are lots more in this series.

Nothing Familiar by Sam Cheever is a wonderful story to read. This is book number three in this wonderful series and I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading mysteries.

I found this book quite slow at the start, but the excitement certainly ratcheted up after that with a visit to the underworld where LA needs to find a cure for her familiar, Deg and also a poison to defeat the wraiths that have been allowed to escape from the tenth circle of hell. The author certainly has a vivid imagination and the characters and situations that she has created are vividly brought to life.
Book two in the series could just about be read as a stand-alone, but I would certainly suggest that the first two books are read before this one as otherwise it wouldn’t make much sense.
I love Sam Cheever mysteries and this cozy was a simple joy to read. Who knows that there a magical critter living amount the normal’s? Is there a cure for Deg? LA, Deg, Aunt Trudy and Grandmother Celeste are awesome characters. Pack with twists, turns lots of action and fast paced you will be spending a very enjoyable time with this book. It is another great cozy, but a talented writer. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
LA, Brock and Trudy work together to save Deg from the wraiths. Slow to grab my interest but a good story once it does.

A really fun and fabulous book that is fast-paced and easily read in one sitting. Found that there were a few bits that could have been a bit tighter, but I love this series and enjoyed this instalment a lot. Looking forward to more by this prolific writer!
This book was, once again, amazing!!! I think it’s my favorite one yet. Land Deh are at the fight again. This time, Deg is seriously injured and LA must travel to the 10th level of Hell to bring back a cure. As she fights unknown forces and angels she finds a strength in herself. Just when all seems to finally be ok, trouble with her Aunt Trudy reappears, leading us to the next book! I so cannot wait for it to come out. This was such a good book I couldn’t put it down. Read it!!!! You will not be disappointed!
Nothing Familiar
Reluctant Familiar Mysteries Book 3
Sam Cheever
I think this one is my favorite one yet. LA is off to the underworld to search for a flower – and she does not come back quite right. The twists in this one threw me for quite a loop, and I love that in a book. It was great!!
Although I LOVE just about everything this author writes, this is my FAVORITE series hands down! Quick witted humor is always a-plenty when you pick up a book by this author. No spoilers in this review! Although you would do best to read (at least) the first book in this series first (to familiarize ((no pun intended)) yourself with the characters), this book does just fine as a standalone but does pick up where the previous book leaves off in the story. The characters and storyline are well developed and entertaining and this suddenly becomes that book that you can’t put down. Lots of action and thrills, some parts will have you holding your breath, or shaking your head. So, come on, take a visit to hell, get to know the evil villain, and of course, there is the murder…yes the murder! LA and Deg do not disappoint and you will be so glad you picked up this little number!
Seems like the erasure spell didn’t quite work as well as Deg and Lee Ann had hoped at Christmas time. A group called The Guild is threatening to expose all the witches and magical people to the humans at Illusion City. Lee Ann and Deg try to stop this from happening, but something or someone has been killing two people and then almost killed Deg! Lee Ann must go out on her own with the help of her grandmother to try and stop the insanity. Can she get the job done or will she too be killed off? What about Deg? He is not doing so well, something got into his head and is leaving him all but dead. Can anything be done to save him? You will need to read the book to find the answers. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book from Booksprout.
Great easy to read fun magical cozy mystery. Can be read in a day. Great addition to series. Looking forward to next one.
Can be read as a stand alone as long as you keep to what is happening in this book.Okay , I have to admit that if you are picking up this book as your first in the series, then you might find some of the fine details confusing. I read book two and admit it took me till chapter 10 to remember some of them. I still found myself getting confused. Too long between books for my memory abilities. Even had to read my review to trigger memory, lol.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
Nothing Familiar #4 – I had a bit of problem getting into this book but then the story kicked into gear and didn’t slow down. Nothing picks up where Hijinks stopped with the mind wipe being a problem and solutions are needed. The storylines are interesting and after a slow start, fast paced and full of action. The characters keep the attention of the reader along with the author’s vivid descriptions and imagination. The emotions run the full gamut, plenty for everyone. Another good addition to a good series. 4*
Reluctant Familiar Series:
Familiar Territory #1 – Intense. Intriguing. Interesting. Fast paced. This well written story was hard to put down once started. The story line was rather interesting and a bit different from the usual paranormal mysteries. The characters were developed enough to understand them and their motives. I really like Posh and Mabel. Most of the characters are likable and all of their dialogues were realistic. The Web made for an interesting character, too. The Cheever humor is in evidence throughout the story. I’m looking forward to reading more by this interesting author. There’s an overview, which I appreciate knowing what the story is about before I read it. I contacted the author to review her books and she graciously gave me FT. 5*
A Familiar Problem #2 – Trudy’s castle is way too cool; I want one, too! Ms. Cheever’s vivid descriptions of people, places and things places you there in all the happenings, and she uses a casual, laid back style of “talking”, like you’re settin around gossiping. I love the character development of Trudy, so funny but so scary. My favorite character was Celeste; she was tough in more than one way – oops, translation: awesome. This story warms up then hits the door running; fast paced and action packed, the story twists and turns until the last page. The emotions run the gamut from happy to sad to terrified amongst others. If you like Butcher, you’ll love Cheever. I found this book on Booksprout, yeah! 5*
Sam Cheever, Familiar Hijinks #3 – While this book had some humor, there was more intrigue and suspense going on with this addition to the series. A couple of new characters are added to the mix and a new set of frenemies? Set, of course, just before Christmas day, this fast paced, multiple storylined book ends with a cute and unexpected surprise concerning Santa himself. While the little ones may be frightened by what happens to the mall Santas, this is a nice Christmas story for the rest of the kids, up to 99-years-old. This story can be read without having read the first two books in this series. Of course, they’re good stories, too. I contacted the author to review her books and received this through Booksprout. 4* (Part of Sleigh Bells and Sleuthing Christmas Collection.)
Reluctant Familiar Series end.
Black Magic is Afoot in the City
This is a busy novel! Things are getting worse in the city and LA and Deg are trying to figure it out. Another trip to Hell and more incredible paranormal creatures. This is a difficult book to put down. It is also difficult to wait for the next book in the series. I received this ARC book for free and this is my honest review.
Sam Cheever’s done it again, another relaxing, action packed magical mystery tour. Ms. Cheever’s vivid descriptions of people, places and the unexplainable has you feeling like you are right alongside our heroes.
Nothing Familiar follows up shortly after the events in Familiar Hijinks. The mind wipe at Christmas didn’t work on someone and now that someone is working to let mortals know that magical beings are living amongst them. LeeAnn (LA) and her friends are tasked with finding the source of the leaked information. Then LA and Deg are attacked and Deg and another friend are critically injured and slowly dying.
LA, demon Brock, and aunt Trudy travel to the underworld for a cure for Deg and poison for the wraiths that can’t be killed. The big question, can they succeed, if so, can they make it home alive and untainted by the evils of the underworld.
This story warms up then hits the door running; fast paced and action packed, the story twists and turns until the last page.
I’m giving five stars to this cozy paranormal mystery. I’m anxiously waiting for the next installment – just have to find out more about LA, her friends and Aunt Trudy and, gone-but-not-forgotten Grandmother Celeste.
