“…exceptionally entertaining writing…”“…George is genuinely hilarious…”“…everything you could want in a travel memoir and more…”“…hilarious, cringe-worthy and totally chaotic. A brilliant read…”“…amusing, informative and heart-warming…”“…I laughed out loud throughout…”“…I learned more about our great US of A from this BRITISH author than I did in history class…”Two Brits, George and Mark, set off … class…”
Two Brits, George and Mark, set off from New York City to explore the back roads of America. In this calamity-ridden travel tale, George sets out in true clichéd fashion to discover the real America.
Throw in plenty of run-ins with the police, rapidly dwindling finances and Josephine – the worst car in the world – and you have all the ingredients for a classic American road trip. Will George and Mark make it all the way to California?
And then there is Rachel, George’s girlfriend, left back in England. Would travelling to the United States without her turn out to be the stupidest decision he had ever made?

I loved seeing America from a tourist’s point of view. Next time through I hope he’ll get a chance to visit Michigan and learn the language of the “Yoopers.”
I’ve read several books by this author. This is an entertaining description of his trip around the US in an always-on-the-brink-of-conking-out “car.”
A very entertaining and enjoyable travel memoir.
A hilarious and realistic travel memoir. Two men, a beat-up old van and no idea where they are going – what could possibly go wrong? Well, just about everything it would seem. A great read whether you are about to embark on a gap year, or you are a veteran traveller (even from your armchair). The author writes with an ironic sense of the inevitable, with some genuinely funny moments. What stands out from his travels, though, is less about the Grand Canyon and other giant travel locations, but more about the smaller, everyday towns and villages he travels through. The quirky American bar owners, gas stations, cafés and clubs. The nights spent freezing sleeping in the back of a van, the hikes and disappointments, and the sandwiches scoffed for tea. I was sad when the journey ended and look forward to reading more from this author.
Very entertaining almost to the point of unbelievable. Can’t imagine ubdertaking such an adventure.
Great travel log of America
Just an easy, light read for these quarantined Covid days at home, I enjoyed it very much and over the years I have been to some of the places he went to. Humorous and written well. Thanks.
Disappointing. He sets out to see authentic, back roads America, but it’s pretty much a bar hop without much depth.
This book is hilarious, 2 young from England traveling around America, the sites and sounds, the road trip. I cannot put it down.
An easy read. I’m s as sways interested in what people from other countries have to say about our country.
Great book
Worth it!
It wasn’t as funny as I thought it should be given what it was supposed to be about.
I haven’t finished it yet but I’ve had a laugh out loud time of reading it so far. Loved this one so much I bought another one by George Mahood.
Something that I never aspire to do, take a road trip in a junk heap car, but I really appreciated going along for the ride in Josephine and seeing the sights across America and even in my own great state of Maine!
It’s amazing that a foreigner knows things about my country that I don’t. Despite several unfortunate experiences it seems like the author enjoyed his months exploring the USA.
This is my third George Mahood book. Love his self-deprecation sense of humor.
Good enough for me to buy at least one more from this author. British humor – very dry – funny.
Just a fun read. I’ll look for more books by this author.
E very young man dreams about driving across the country with best friend or Girlfriend George did it both while learning the idiosyncrasies of another country,
A good road book, a genre I enjoy. A bit of romance, was nice, interesting perspective, outsider experiencing the US.
