How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days gets a millennial makeover in this romantic comedy by USA Today bestselling author Andie J. Christopher.“The way Jack sets out to win Hannah back is really the stuff of true romance.”—NPRJack Nolan is a gentleman, a journalist, and unlucky in love. His viral success has pigeon-holed him as the how-to guy for a buzzy, internet media company instead of covering … buzzy, internet media company instead of covering hard-hitting politics. Fed up with his fluffy articles and the app-based dating scene as well, he strikes a deal with his boss to write a final piece de resistance: How to Lose a Girl. Easier said than done when the girl he meets is Hannah Mayfield, and he’s not sure he wants her to dump him.
Hannah is an extremely successful event planner who’s focused on climbing the career ladder. Her firm is one of the most prestigious in the city, and she’s determined to secure her next promotion. But Hannah has a bit of an image problem. She needs to show her boss that she has range, including planning dreaded, romantic weddings. Enter Jack. He’s the perfect man to date for a couple weeks to prove to her boss that she’s not scared of feelings.
Before Jack and Hannah know it, their fake relationship starts to feel all too real—and neither of them can stand to lose each other.

Sharp, smart, and sexy — a perfectly executed role-swapped How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. We absolutely adored Hannah’s verve and ambition, and Jack’s delicious pursuit of the woman he wanted to deserve.
Not the Girl You Marry by Andie J. Christopher is so fast and funny and smart. A book that fired on all cylinders—romance, story, characters—and felt really young and fresh, too.
It’s not often I get downright giddy upon finishing a book but I totally am with NOT THE GIRL YOU MARRY. It’s perfection. One of my favorite heroes EVER. A heroine who delighted me to no end. SO MANY FEELS. Loved it. Absolutely loved it.
Fun, flirty, and fantastic! Not The Girl You Marry is the perfect swoony summer read to put a smile on your face.
Not the Girl You Marry is funny, heartfelt, and super sexy!
3.5 STARS! ~
Not the Girl You Marry by Andie J. Christopher was a retelling of the classic romantic comedy movie from the 2000s: How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. Only, Andie puts a unique spin into play as well as reversing the roles of the characters.
We first meet Jack Nolan. He’s the kind of man who thrives in relationships. He’s been in three so far but now that’s he’s single he wants to try the casual dating thing. That is until he meets Hannah and feels an instant attraction.
Hannah is a strong, intelligent and independent woman but she, unlike Jack, struggles with relationships. She believes men don’t see her as the serious type of girl. You know, the girl you take home to met the parents. She’s dated guys; however, it seems once they have sex and are together for a little while, the guy soon realizes that he doesn’t want to go any deeper. This has made Hannah feel a disdain towards men.
Due to their demanding jobs they each must lie to the other to further their careers. Everything becomes a mess of epic proportions when these two begin to develop feelings for one another.
I struggled with moments of repetiton and when Hannah would constantly bring herself down, coming off as a character who self-loathes. Battling her own inner demons of self-love and accepting herself, Hannah knows who she is and she is in fact fierce but she didn’t believe anyone could love her. The fact that Jack goes out of his way to prove her wrong in that aspect is something I found I rather loved.
Overall, Not the Girl You Marry is a sweet romance full of wit with bits of angst thrown in. I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters. I’m looking forward to Jack’s sister, Bridget’s book next
This book was so amazing, I barely have words.
Basically a gender-swapped “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” the premise isn’t strikingly original. However, moments of creative brilliance arise in the modern take on the older premise, such as maybe not sending dick-picks or mansplaining, which wouldn’t have found their way into the early 2000’s film. But that’s not what makes the novel so good. Rather, it’s the characters. You truly grow to love the heroine and hero and you with you knew them in real life, and, man, aside from the whole lying about using a girl for a story thing, Jack is major #bookboyfriend goals. The author manages to create an authentic-feeling voice for Jack, which is a feat, considering many romcoms seem to have male voices softened slightly by their female authors or exaggerated to the point of being slightly grotesque. Instead, Christopher manages to capture what feels like an accurate male perspective (then again, what do I know?).
The funniest part about how much I loved this book? I hated “How to Love a Guy in 10 Days.”
Not the Girl You Marry is tears-in-eyes, giggling-in-bed hilarious, and Hannah is the fiercely complicated heroine I needed to read!
Andie J. Christopher brings modern dating to painful, funny, emotional life in Not the Girl You Marry.
Smart, emotional, and jam packed with goodness.
This was an entertaining romcom, but unfortunately it didn’t hook me the way that I had hoped. I liked Hannah and Jack, but I didn’t love them or feel really invested in them until later in the novel. The instalust/love was really strong (especially on Jack’s part) and that just made it even stranger to me that he would choose Hannah for his article. I understand that they both had emotional baggage that was wreaking havoc on their self-esteem and influencing their life choices, but their actions and emotions just felt so strong that it left me more confused than anything. Jack’s family coming together in the end to help him and the epilogue were the sweetest though and the book left me with a smile on my face.
Something I really loved about the book was that Hannah was biracial. I appreciated the time spent discussing and exploring that in the story. The drama was a bit predictable, but I did laugh quite a bit at the challenges of dating in this digital age. It made me very grateful that I didn’t have to endure much of that BS before meeting my husband. Perhaps that was the problem for me and this book though. I just couldn’t relate. The book is marketed as a millennial makeover of the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 days. I’ve never seen the movie, but maybe if I had, I would have enjoyed this one more.
*I voluntarily read an advance review copy of this book*
I ran to the Berkley singing at RWA to get an ARC of this book after meeting and loving Andie, and it does not disappoint. Everything I want in a romance in one nice, neat package – sweet, funny, and sexy, with a fast-paced plot and likable characters that kept me turning the pages long into the night. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Andie is a friend and I literally burst into tears trying to describe how much I loved the heroine of this book to her. It’s the perfect combination of steamy, romantic, hilarious, and thoughtful.
Not the Girl You Marry was such a fun read! I loved the characters, the humor, the romance, the steamy bits…the whole package! I’m coming late to the party, as this book has been out for a couple of years, but I really enjoyed it, and will definitely be reading more by Andie J. Christopher.
Not the Girl You Marry was a highly entertaining novel. It was hilarious! I laughed so hard, I cried. The characters had great chemistry and were very interesting. The author used several methods of characterization: witty dialogue, outlandish actions, and catchy descriptive phrases. I loved it as it was very entertaining!
his is the kind of book that would frustrate you to no end because you get to know both sides of the story. But this is also the kind of book that wouldn’t work better otherwise.
To be honest, Not the Girl You Marry wasn’t even on my radar. I just found out about it when I accidentally requested the 2019 release of Buzz Books Romance on NetGalley. Out of all the excerpts featured, it was the one that really caught my attention. The first chapter got me hooked and made me want more.
Not the Girl You Marry is a gender-reversed version of the movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Although I think I watched the movie years ago, I don’t particularly remember any of it so I didn’t have any problems with that part of the plot. But after reading some of the reviews, fans of the movie might have a different opinion so you be the judge.
This book was absolutely entertaining. I guess it’s because I’m trash for the fake relationship trope. It didn’t bore me and I was curious to know what happens next.

Cute romance between Hannah and Jack – but they are both using the other person to get ahead at their jobs. Naturally, they fall for each other, but breakup when they find out they were using each other. Not to worry, there is a happily ever after. There is a lot of sex and pretty juvenile talk in the beginning of the book.

Not the Book I Was Expecting…but it was the book I wanted!
Hannah comes off as a ball busting badass while Jack is the perfect guy who keeps losing the girl. Enter the gender flip How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days plotline…but then the layers of the book start to reveal themselves.
Hannah doesn’t really know who she is in the eyes of others because she’s struggled with her identity since childhood so she puts up the defenses. This was a part of the storyline that I saw a lot of criticism about in other reviews, but it’s a very #ownvoices part of the story (she even says so in the author’s note!). I have a biracial nephew and I’ve watched him and supported him as he’s struggled with these same issues of identity and acceptance.
Jack immediately sees the real Hannah but can’t see is own abandonment issues and how they’ve played into his previous relationships. But Hannah can and she helps him navigate those while trying to protect herself and her heart.
I loved the explorations of self, identify, family, and intimacy. All the funny of the familiar plot line was there, completed with the friend who keeps making the same mistake with guys and that snake of a coworker trying to undermine the everything, but Not The Girl You Marry gave me so many more feels!
This is a “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” retelling. While I enjoyed the mixed-race perspective of one of the main characters (which I think is the strength of this story) the overall outcome was predictable and boring.
I listened to this book in the car driving to and from work. As I began to listen, this felt a lot like the movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” While the base of the story was very similar, I think Andie J Christopher‘s characters that she created where fantastic. I loved Jack and Hannah as well as all of the minor characters in the book. I thought they were both funny, charming, and just a little “crazy” (in a good way, of course!!!). Jack and Hannah and their banter back and forth made this story stand out from the movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” It shaped the story that made me what to continue listening long after my drive had ended. Andie J Christopher does a wonderful job with her descriptions of characters as well as the situations they are in. It is easy to picture each part of the story in your mind’s eye and see it all unfolding before you! While this was first book of Andie J Christopher that I have read, I will for sure be checking out her other books!!!
