Lady Maria hasn’t forgotten that the ton had disparaged her American mother and treated her coldly because of her tainted blood. Determined not to accept any of the ‘eligibles’ she is happy to fall in love with a commoner. Only he isn’t a commoner but the elusive Lord Daventon!
LOVE UNDER MISTAKEN IDENTITY
The ton calls her Sweet Maria and, even in her fourth Season, eligibles continue to offer … eligibles continue to offer her marriage. They do not know Lady Maria despises the hypocritical ways of Polite Society and is trying to sail away to America!
Though she is the granddaughter of a duke, Lady Maria is a Child of Scandal because her mother was an American commoner.
She blames the duke and the duchess for her parents’ death. Had they not disowned them, they would not have died of a virulent fever in America, leaving her an orphan at the age of five.
Lady Maria agrees to an arranged match to ward off her persistent suitors, treating the engagement as a sham one to be ended at her convenience.
Then, most unexpectedly, she finds love with a commoner.
Only he isn’t a commoner but the Earl of Daventon.
Gareth, Earl of Daventon is no stranger to Scandal. Rumour has it that his father had banished his mother for adulterous behavior. And yet, he yearned until his last breath to have her back. Gareth is determined not to repeat his sire’s mistake. Love is a quagmire and I shall not be caught in it.
But love finds him. The object of his ardour is a mysterious young woman who dresses like a shop girl and behaves like a lady.
Lord Daventon remedies the situation by accepting an arranged match, his betrothed being Lady Maria whom he hasn’t met.
All of which leads to a delightful tangle of affairs.

Good story and no yucky sex to wade through.
not much plot and action but clean enjoyable reading
This is a cute story, but the story was hard to follow sometimes due to lack of transitions between character perspectives.
Great book. Will read it again.
Nice twist on the not so nice theme.
This was an enjoyable story with great character development.
You more or less know where this one is going but it is a pleasant ride and interesting enough along the way. Sure, Maria came across as a little too naive & unsuspecting, but it was a good read that held my attention on a sleepless night.
It was nice to see a character have an opinion of how they were viewed and read how that character dealt with their reputation and rose above it to mak iit work. Also pleasant to have an easy memory of a more realistic story.
Romance more in the Jane Austin style, not porn!
Interesting and creative h, but plot slow to connect H and h in their “real lives.” Recommend as enjoyable romantic story.
Cleverly written with tantalising twists the beloveds never see coming.. Many characters and friends emerge from the pages. The author has an easy way with descriptions that allow the reader to relate to the basics of a character, then let’s your imagination run.

Had they not disowned them, they would not have died of a virulent fever in America, leaving her an orphan at the age of five. She has not forgotten the coldness she had met with as a child, and how there were those who examined her features for tainted blood and disparaged her mother to her face. What did I like? This was the cutest book it kept this mystery running almost throughout the whole book and you just knew they were going to figure it out or at least have some hints that would lead to them madly falling in love and living happily ever after but it just wouldn’t happen. Things would get really complicated and you just had to fall in love for them. I truly enjoyed reading this and loved both Gareth and Maria.
@ddeegott What are you going to like? Romance, humor, pain, anger, mystery, history and intrigue. Wow, that’s a lot for a Regency romance but it has a little of all those and more, a great read. For someone just getting their feet wet in this genre, this is really a great read. The characters are charming and developed. The storyline is interesting and intriguing with plenty of action to keep you reading on. With a little more experience in this genre, this author is going to take over and captivate all of us. I found very few errors for the era and know that if she keeps going these will resolve themselves. Her storytelling is enough to keep us coming back and I certainly hope that book two is in the works because I can’t wait to read it. I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
