This is a fun Paranormal Romance about a dragon who thinks she’s a human and the male dragon who tries to persuade her otherwise.
As the first book of what appears will be a good-sized series, there was a lot of world-building to be done and groundwork to be laid.
Angie’s life pretty much sucks, and seems to go from bad to worse the more we see of her. From all appearances, and her smell (according to Eoin), she is a dragon shifter. The only trouble is that she’s never been able to shift. After many attempts, some more bad luck, and then a bit of good luck, she is finally able to achieve her true form. One would think that things would go smoothly for Angie and Eoin from there, but there are yet more trials for them to endure.
At long last, however, they finally get their happily-ever-after together.
This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Not His Dragon by Annie Nicholas is the first book in the Not His series. This book is so well thought out. I laughed and had a few “Awww” moments. Eoin and Angie are perfect for each other. When I read this book I could see the movie in my mind. The writing is crisp and funny, and I love that it’s funny in a Not Mean way. Often humor is at someone’s expense, but not in this book. The characters poke fun at themselves and each other in a loving and funny way. Eoin is endearingly clueless and Angie is more than willing to clue him in. Beth, Ryota, Ken and Viktor are awesome support characters that will have you clamoring for their stories. Here is a great series that will leave you feeling good about what you just read.
I loved these characters and this series
4.5 Stars
What a fantastic start to this series. Nicholas delivered a fun, exciting, and sexy story that I couldn’t put down. I was completely caught up in the story and the characters. I enjoyed the twists, turns, and little surprises she threw our way. I’m eager to jump into the next book!
Great series.
Right from the start we get a clear picture of the scattered Angie. Being flustered right at the start makes for an amazing meet-cute with the dark and severely annoyed Eoin. When Eoin “mistakes” her for a dragon encroaching on his territory he unwittingly opens the door to Angie’s past, one she has no clue exists. Angie’s scratching business is finally starting to see success and there’s no way she’ll let an egotistical crazy man, even one who may or may not be incredibly attractive and compelling, drive her out of the city. But desperation on both sides and Angie’s bills combine to give them the opportunity to forge a connection, maybe a forever one.
An interesting take on mating rituals stood out to me the most in this story. It was quite different from what we normally get with shifter stories. Instead of a pull toward a fated mate, in this story we get regular dating but with a feeling similar to a mating frenzy going on inside because of circumstances rather than what we get in the fated-mate trope. There’s both a literal and a metaphorical take on the “mating dance” and the possibility of “cutting in” on that dance was a bit of a shock. I kind of liked it. No, I didn’t like the potential for heartbreak and pain, but the concept was one that was so different that I couldn’t hate it in the least.
There were a couple things that did bother me in this story, though. First is the slightly sketchy side characters. Some of them turn out to be rather innocent but still make you question if we’re getting the whole truth. It becomes unsettling because of who these people are and what their roles are as well.
Second is that important identity information was downplayed. Angie’s background is a mystery and when we finally see what she is and how rare she is, in more ways than one, the details are given the brush off when there were so many to be had about other dragons. It felt like a cop out. Like the author didn’t want to go into detail for a world she didn’t fully create rather than a feeling of acceptance and reluctance on the part of the MC’s, but mainly for Angie.
The whole story overall is cute, funny, and sexy. Between broody, committed Eoin and feisty, strong-willed Angie we get an interesting interplay of confusion, lust, softening, and love. Both have a history to overcome if they want a happy future and I felt that they were a good match for one another. Their passion was strong and their bond stronger. The world that was created (as far as it was anyway…) was engaging and drew me in. There are many characters I wouldn’t mind finding out more about and am looking forward to their stories.
** spoiler alert ** Eoin Grant is a dragon who left his family determined to make it on his own. Angie grew up never quite fitting in with the humans or the shifters. One sniff and he knows what she is. Will Angie be able to break free of the curse put on her? Will Eoin be able to keep her safe?
Loved how despite trying to resist, neither character could deny their attraction. I loved how strong Angie was and how she was determined to not just lay down and take everything. Loved how once Eoin accepted everything, he was willing to do whatever it took to help her. Great read!
OMG! I loved this story. Angie and Eoin were perfect together. While he tried to help her find out her true heritage, she helped him to become “nicer”. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Nicholas but not the last. I plan on reading the rest in this series as soon as possible.
*I received an Advance Reader’s Copy of this book via Hidden Gems which I am voluntarily reviewing*
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this book! It was exactly what I needed. It was light hearted, funny, sarcastic, and sweet. I laughed out loud a few times and enjoyed all the banter between the characters. Eoin was scary and intimidated everyone he encountered but when it came to Angie he was super sweet. Angie was independent and a strong female even though she felt she didn’t belong in any certain group. She had many insecurities but didn’t let those stop her. I loved Nicholas’ version of shifters and I always enjoy dragon shifters. Reading this book was a lot like Eve Langlais, whom I absolutely love!
This was a fantastic and fun read! It was so great I couldn’t put it down. Of course, everything I have ever read by Annie Nicholas has been amazing! All you shifter/paranormal lovers this is a must read. Witty little quips and down right sarcastically hilarious comments made me love this story even more.
Angie is a “human” who never feels like she fits in anywhere. She has opened her own business that caters to paranormals. Eoin is a dragon shifter and an artist whom has scented that Angie is a she-dragon which is unusual on its own not to mention the fact she comes across human.
This light hearted shifter romance includes glimpses of wolf shifters and vampires. I am looking forward to reading this ENTIRE series!! WOOHOO! 🙂
I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, & I totally love the covers for all three books in this series. I couldn’t put this down, stayed up way too late to finish it, too. I like that it’s a bit different than the normal shifter type of book writing. The characters (Angie and Eoin) are very likable, & I appreciated that it wasn’t instant love as is the case with so many shifter books (it’s still a bit fast, but not instant for either of them, more developed as a relationship over a few weeks). Eoin even fights it a bit before he realizes what’s happening. Since Angie doesn’t feel her shifter side, doesn’t feel the sway of instant love. I was pulled in almost immediately, & felt the flow was pretty smooth thru the book. I felt the world building was pretty good, could have used a bit of expanding in places, but not enough to lose a reader in my opinion. I liked their HEA in the end, but felt it was a tad rushed. There were a lot of unanswered questions though, which I didn’t appreciate (that’s why the 4 stars). If these will be answered in the remaining books in the series, I might change my tune, but I don’t know how interconnected they are until I read them. The other thing I felt took away from this book, was the swearing. It was a bit over the top, random & out of character for Angie, felt more like shock value than something Angie would do so excessively at random moments.
**(SPOILERS)** If Cedric can shoot off lightning, and Eoin can shoot of flames from their mouths, what can Angie do, I was dying to see her open her mouth & shoot off something at Cedric during the fighting! I didn’t like that Angie didn’t finish looking at Cedric’s note to get some of the info that might lead to answers to so many questions, just cause it’s written on paper doesn’t mean she has to be around the clans or pursue a relationship with them, especially now that she’s with Eoin. (if I had been her, I would have wanted to know who her real clan/family is, they might know how come she ended up adopted by humans, or what happened to her biological parents that she ended up adopted with a spell on her, etc)
I found myself laughing often while reading this book.
We have Angie who lives in a town of shifters. She has no clue what she is but she thinks she has shifter blood some where in her. Why? She has claw like nails. Well what does one do when you have nice long nails? Open a back scratching service. Angie has recently stopped seeing the werewolf Alpha and now she has someone else sniffing around her. Who? Eion of course and what is he. Eion knows what Angie is and is determined she will know and she will be his or will she?
Short but funny, and sexy story I enjoyed it.
