As featured in USA Today’s “Happy Ever After” blog–a sparkling, suspenseful mixture of Gothic romance and romantic comedy from the Daphne du Maurier Award-winning author of With This Curse and Sea of Secrets!
Vivacious actress Sybil Ingram looks forward to a life of security when she leaves the theater to marry a wealthy American. But when he dies suddenly on their wedding night, she finds … on their wedding night, she finds herself a penniless widow. Her only legacy is Brooke House, a Gothic revival manor in the wilds of the Hudson River Valley. However, the eerie mansion comes with two tenants. One is a hostile ghost. The second, and far worse, is former violinist Roderick Brooke—the most insolent, dangerous, maddeningly gorgeous man she’s ever met.
As Sybil and Roderick engage in a battle of wills—and wits—she finds herself increasingly drawn to him despite her growing suspicion of a connection between him and the spirit that haunts Brooke House. But soon an even greater threat arises: the mysterious queen of local society, Mrs. Lavinia Dove. For reasons that Sybil can’t imagine, Mrs. Dove is determined to have Brooke House and Roderick for herself… if necessary, by deadly means.
By turns mysterious and moving, sparkling and spooky, Nocturne for a Widow follows a spirited heroine through adventures in life, love, and death. From the colorful theatrical world of late-Victorian London to the American wilderness, Sybil’s travels will test her mettle–and her heart.

This whole series is very good. Each book leads you on to the next – hard to put down.
I can enjoy a good ghost story. I don’t seek them, i like mysteries and sci fi but when a book turns out to be ghostly, i’m happy to suspend disbelief. The mystery in this book is a bit obvious, but the supernatural flavor was a nice inclusion. I do not like romance and have down-rated the book one-star because of the prominent sexual tension and all the misunderstandings that is de riguer in that type of story. I would read another Sybil Ingram book and recommend this one.
truly an enjoyable read! thankyou
Too much melodrama for me. And quite inbelievable.
This book was a change of pace for me it was enjoyable reading.
With a touch of the supernatural, this mysterious story is an easy-to-read novel that is satisfying as the story unfolds.
This seemed to be a very original storyline with excellent characters. It was well written and well thought out. I did think the hero was a bit more than distrustful of the heroine and that bothered me but it did make the story have more tension and realism.
I love historical mysteries.
I really loved this book. Even though I didn’t want to start another series I am because I have to see what happens next. This book reminds me a little bit of The Daisy Gumm Majesty Mysteries series and that is my favorite series of books. Now this series will be right up there with my favorites!
This was a fun book to read.
A late turned that’s easy to read .
Great plot. Funny situations sometimes. Great, happy ending.
Good story,kept me interested.
This is not my normal reading genre, and even though it was a more than a bit predictable I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
strong characters, solid writing. Good introduction to a series.
I really enjoyed the book and read it in one day it was a great story and i liked the characters
Enjoyed reading and sort of being unpredictable to the end.
the Author is very good at recapturing the times and how single women would support themselves
Set in a long-past era of Amsterdam. This is not my usual type book to read, but it was a wonderful experience. The characters were so unusual and strong that for weeks after I finished the book, I still thought about them. The story was interesting and the ending was a big surprise!
Couldn’t finish not my type of read
