San Francisco crime reporter Tom Reed is burned out. On the day he decides to finally quit the news business, a sensational story breaks. A heart-stopping robbery-homicide at a jewelry store. The suspects have shot and killed a police officer before fleeing with a female hostage. Reed rushes to the scene, his passion resurrected for one last big story.
Arriving at the chaos, Reed is stunned to … stunned to learn from a staff member, still clutching a receipt, that the hostage is his wife, Ann Reed.
Horrified, Reed confronts San Francisco Homicide Inspector Walt Sydowski and other detectives on the case. All know the odds.
Reed is paralyzed with anguish, but his son, Zach, refuses to give up hope of finding his mother, despite the grisly trail left by the killers. Now the clock is ticking down as Reed battles his demons and Sydowski in a life and death search for Ann.

My new favorite author always writes entertaining books…on every level!
Well written and suspenseful! Mofina’s books are always fast-paced and plot development is outstanding! I’ve read several of his books and always enjoy the ride!
If you like Rick Mofina, and I do a lot, you’ll like this book. That said, it’s not my favorite of his collection. He keeps up with a list of desperate yet average people put in horrific situations that make you feel as though your own life is a step or two away from being there also. No one has super powers or special forces training. Just plain folk. The main character, a soon-to-be-retiring newspaper reporter, was a little too whiny for me. This will not stop me from reading more Mofina, but I will not be reading the other books featuring this character. Well, not until I’ve read all the other Mofina books, that is.
Another winner by a talented author,
I love Molina’s writing
Very enjoyable
good book!
Pretty much action and twists and turns. Good read although somewhat predictable. Enjoyed it
This is the second book by Rick Mofina that I have read, No Way Out and The Blood of Others. To pull you in quickly they both have a good opening but soon I found myself quick scanning the paragraphs and pages to get through the often repetitive and long winded descriptions of the moment. Because of this I will not read another of his books.
It is a little bit unbelievable. I ended up skimming through a lot to get to the end. Would not recommend.
Not my favorite Mofina book but a pretty good read.
I cannot recommend this book because it is too scary. I want to be enjoy a book and I don’t enjoy so much violence. It is too drawn out. I have read several chapters but I cannot finish it. I can feel the pain of Mr. Reed but I don’t care about the other characters.
I loved this book. It kept me on tenterhooks all the way through. Not good if you want a good night’s sleep – it is very hard to put down, and you can’t wait for the next twist in the plot! I fully recommend it!

Not my cup of tea
Like all of Mofina’s books, this was was a very good read!
It was okay but main character was a bit dumb
