San Francisco crime reporter Tom Reed is burned out. On the day he decides to finally quit the news business, a sensational story breaks. A heart-stopping robbery-homicide at a jewelry store. The suspects have shot and killed a police officer before fleeing with a female hostage. Reed rushes to the scene, his passion resurrected for one last big story.
Arriving at the chaos, Reed is stunned to … stunned to learn from a staff member, still clutching a receipt, that the hostage is his wife, Ann Reed.
Horrified, Reed confronts San Francisco Homicide Inspector Walt Sydowski and other detectives on the case. All know the odds.
Reed is paralyzed with anguish, but his son, Zach, refuses to give up hope of finding his mother, despite the grisly trail left by the killers. Now the clock is ticking down as Reed battles his demons and Sydowski in a life and death search for Ann.

What a great premise! On the day Tom Reed plans to resign from his newspaper crime beat, he’s enticed to cover one more juicy story–a robbery gone wrong/abduction case. The twist–the kidnap victim is his wife, who always warned him he got to close to his stories. Lots of twists and turns, action-packed and loved the narrative. I had a bit of a hard time believing the cops would allow Tom to be part of the investigation and the final chapters were a bit of a stretch (would have loved his WIFE to get herself out of the predicament herself!). But overall, a solid, intriguing and entertaining read from a master of the genre. Recommended.
One of the best I’ve read in a long time. Want more from Mofina.
Interesting fast moving plot.
Suspenseful writing and many twists in the plot.
This book is definitely action pack and filled with suspense.Rick Molina is an excellent writer.
This is my second book by Rick Mofina and once again he grabbed my attention right at the start and didn’t let go. More twisted characters, good interplay between cop and reporter and very clever storyline. I am a new fan of this author– even if the twisted, dark characters are the stuff of nightmares.
Love his Tom Reed character, and this was a heart-stopping ride from start to finish. Highly recommend this book.
A new favorite author of thrillers/ suspense.
Riveting! Rick Mofina does it again. A plot with unpredictable twists and turns.
Well written, kept you guessing as to where he would go next.
Great book. I could not put it down from beginning to end. Action packed. Keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen from one page to the next. Loved it.
I rate this novel as an average read. The story seemed to plod along.
Very good
I like his books. They keep my interest and move right along
I stayed up late into the night unable to sleep, and having to finish the book before I could rest which doesn’t happen often.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely kept me interested.
This is the second book by this author that I’ve read. The other was Cold Fear. Found both interesting, ones that I looked forward to getting back to at day’s end. I can understand some of the negative criticism generated in other reviews, but thanks Rick, for another engaging read!
I always read any and all Mofina books. He is an excellent author. He keeps the suspense going the entire time. More please!
