Quite different to most other BDSM stories
I read this as part of a challenge in the Dark Erotica group. There are an awful lot of dark/BDSM books that start with the letter B but I’d really struggled with the letter N!
Personally I wouldn’t call this dark OR a romance, whilst there was technically no safe word there was always a choice. I would call it a well written, sometimes thought provoking and definitely well informed both in physical aspects of BDSM play as well as the psychology and mental impact. There were times when Jaime struggled with her experiences, the author portrayed these incredibly well both in how she coped with them mentally, as well as always reinforcing the consensual nature of them.
There is one incidence where a master steps over the line, which may be a potential trigger for some. I found it very refreshing how this was handled, with consequences that felt realistic. Indeed there were several times I felt this took a route less travelled in BDSM romance, feeling perhaps less glamorised but definitely more honest.
Jaime is in training to be a slave to, and serve, all the Masters and Mistresses of The Enclave. Most of us are conditioned to believe in and seek monogamous relationships, and to truly enjoy this story you have to let go of those preconceptions. Whilst later in the story there is a romantic element most of the story focuses on the mental acceptance of becoming a ‘slave’. Many of us would never be interested in entering a total power exchange of this kind. I certainly don’t understand the appeal that Jaime found in it but by opening my mind to the possibilities I did find her choices easier to accept.
My only ‘issue’ as such was that I didn’t really buy into the romance aspect of the story. There is a hero, whom we meet as the story progresses, and I totally felt their attraction and lust for one another. However there just weren’t enough one-on-one interactions/conversations for me to believe it was anything more than a strong sexual attraction and the beginnings of building a relationship. I rather wish the ‘L’ word had not been used.
However not only did this book help me complete my alphabet challenge, it also introduced me to a new author who’s work I will be reading more of.
Jamie is a sub who finds herself with an unbelievable proposal: spend two weeks at an exclusive program for masters and slaves and train to be a true slave. With her submissive tendencies, it sounds incredible. But the training is hard and it could be more than she can handle.
This is an intense look into the more extreme side of the BDSM community. There of course are many trigger warnings, such as blood play, knife play, and an abusive scene. The story is well written, detailed, and allows you to picture exactly what is happening. My only issue with this plot, is the no safeword rule. While if agreed upon between parties, usually a safe word is necessary for the safety of all parties. The fact that it is basically banned in this community lends itself to some misconstrued concepts of that lifestyle. However, the lifestyle described is real, it’s just very extreme.
Despite my issue, I still greatly enjoyed the story. The scenes were never the same, which kept my interest the entire time. And I am happy with Jamie and Mark’s relationship and what they grew into.
Dark Dominant Romance!
If you like reading BDSM you will love this book. Claire Thompson immerses you into this world of D/s. This is not for the faint of heart. But it is really HOT. A modern day “Story of O”. This story shows the different kinks of BDSM. It also shows that no one is infallible. And the power of forgiveness. Claire Thompson is always at the top of my TBR pile.
Well done
If a place like the one in the book existed – private BDSM house- with masters and subs I imagine it could be like this one. If you are not a fan of bdsm books stay away.
This was not the book for me..but others should read it. It was very intense. Not being able to use your safeword, having to take what anyone does to you, even when the are hard limits..this was hard for me to get past. But it was her choice to enter this agreement. The sex scenes were very steamy and intense…just not for me.
It was ok
Hot, hot, hot
Safe word? What safe word? Who knew you could get addicted to a book
! Oh what fun….
Great book
A little too over the top and intense for me. I’m not sure why I even kept reading to the end
Excellent read…..could only have liked it better if I had alpha male personality. The images brought up in my mind by the author’s words were very stimulating. Submissive woman would probably LOVE this book!
I enjoy reading BDSM in small doses .. but this one is over the top .. I stayed with it to the end (curiosity I guess), but unless you are into the really hard stuff, this one isn’t for you.
A Review of No Safeword by Claire Thompson
Jamie and Mark – 4 Stars
As the first book in the series, this was my first glimpse into full immersion BDSM training. It was very enlightening and not for the faint of heart.

This is my first book by this author and I must say I loved it!!! The book is heavy on the BDSM with the D/s & the Master/slave element as well. It was so well put together and thought out. The author knew her facts about BDSM well and conveyed them in a manner that you could picture each scene, each pose, each action/reaction. Her characters drew me into the story that I wanted to be there and be part if it. This is the first book in a very long time that left me with such an impression. I’ve already been searching for my next book by this author and can’t wait to read it!
