For journalist Eliza Bennett, summers in Sweetbriar Cove were her happiest childhood memories. Now that she’s been unceremoniously fired, evicted, and dumped (all in the same week), she hopes the small town will work its magic again and help get her life back on track. She definitely isn’t looking for a distraction like the handsome stranger she meets on her way into town… especially when she … discovers he might be the man behind her recent misfortunes.
Cal Prescott is in Sweetbriar Cove adjusting to (or escaping from) his new role as head of the family company. He’s always prided himself on his cool logic, but reckoning with the outspoken spitfire, Eliza, is making him forget his responsibilities – and why falling in love would be such a bad idea.
The sparks between them are red-hot, and soon, their passion is heating up the summer nights. But can Eliza and Cal find a way through their differences – or will this opposites-attract romance burn out before it even begins?

This is a wonderful series of books. Sweetbriar Cove quickly became a favorite series. I’ve already ordered the next installment which isn’t available yet.
Eliza returns home to SweetBriar Cover after losing her job on her way back into town she stops to help a motorist that has a flat tire. Turns out the motorist is none other than her old boss, Cal who recently has taken over the management of the Boston Newspaper where she worked.
Cal is overwhelmed with his job duties and living up to his uncle’s standards. He takes his godmother up on the use of her home in SweetBriar to rest and regroup.
It takes Cal a little while to figure out why Eliza is so perturbed at him. That just adds another level of aggravation to Eliza. Cal fired her and doesn’t even know who she is.
The sparks really fly between these two right from the beginning I love the bantering these two have. There was some laugh out loud moments. The only downside to Eliza personality is that she very opionated and doesn’t look at the bigger picture.
Eliza really struggled to see past Cal’s social standing to see the real Cal. Cal doesn’t help matters when she attends a social gala with him and she is treated no better than arm candy. I don’t think he meant to treat her like this. I think he knew she was out of her element and he was trying to help but then on the other hand she can be pretty opinionated and talks first and thinks later.
He really is a very nice, upstanding guy, who is struggling himself with family duties. He’s under a great deal of pressure trying to make every happy and make his parents proud.
These two have to make some tough decisions on future employment and relationships. What I really like about this book as you can visualize their individual struggles and I was very glad that they both took paths that made them happy.
Favorite Quote:
“Maybe he’s been hit by a bus,” she said, still watching her silent phone. “Maybe he ran out of the gala after me, got hit by a bus, and has been in traction all week, unable to call?” She exhaled with a rueful smile. “Wow, you know things are really bad when the best-case scenario involves a gruesome accident.”
My Review:
Cal and Eliza started off with bad blood between them, as in her mind; he was the cause of her recent unemployment. Yet they seemed to have a spark, although it was often one of annoyance, but a spark nonetheless. They had one of the most awkward first dates imaginable, which was only improved by hours of vomiting due to a mutual bout of food poisoning that occurred during the date. I always enjoy returning to this series and becoming reacquainted with the previously featured couples and new friends. I enjoy Ms. Grace’s humor, quirky yet endearingly flawed characters, and engaging storylines. This entertaining series has been easy to follow with each installment being an interconnected yet stand-alone volume.
Sweetbriar Cove is one of my favourite series, I love that every book is about a different couple finding their HEA and I love that each book can be read as stand-alones. Book 6 is Eliza Bennett and Cal Prescott’s story and what a story it is, two very different people coming from two very different backgrounds, could it be opposites attract even when one of you find out the other fired you from the job you loved……
The attraction was instant between Eliza and Cal and the chemistry is off the charts but is that enough when you feel that you are worlds apart. The journey these two need to take has many hurdles along the way, there are a few twists and turns but it’s love that wins out in the end. I loved that the characters have depth and strength, the banter between them was perfect and this book had the perfect mix of love, humour and some seriously hot scenes. Once again Melody Grace has given us another brilliant addition to a great series and another couple to fall in love with.
