No Angels for Christmas is a Christmas story about second chances and helping those most vulnerable: children. At the crux of this story is a preteen girl who’s being harassed by her mother’s boyfriend. He touches her and wants to do more. Also at the heart of this story is a preteen boy whose father beats him and his mother. The on again off again romance between Rachel and Jake take a backseat but still contribute to the dramatic tension.
Three dramatic storylines were, in my humble opinion, too much. Two would’ve been just fine and actually one would’ve been ideal. I know there are readers out there who thrive on the multiple angst but I’m not one of those. I found the angst too much for me to deal with and I had to take breaks from reading it.
I was also unprepared for the heavy Christian message interwoven throughout the plot. Bible verses and praying are prevalent. I didn’t mind, though, because what you’re dealing with in this story relies on faith and the appearance of angels answering prayers. It just caught me by surprise because this hasn’t appeared in any of Petie McCarty’s books I’ve read before.
If you’re looking for a dramatic story with an uplifting message, pick up No Angels for Christmas today. You’ll be crying tears of joy when you reach the ending.
My Rating: 4 stars
When author Petie McCarty brings together a school guidance counselor and a child psychologist, she starts weaving a complex tale of friendship, love, and belief.
No Angels for Christmas is set in the autumn, and the story culminates on Christmas Eve. It is a Christian fiction novel where guardian angels answer a few kids’ prayers for protection. The story is hard to read at times as the story centers around a young child and a couple ‘tweens who are in therapy due to their guidance counselor’s concern about their lives at home.
Ms. McCarty beautifully weaves together each child’s story along with that of Dr. Rachel Kelly and her ex-fiance, Jake Dillon. The story develops a little slowly at first as the characters and their backgrounds are introduced. Through this, Ms. McCarty gives her readers a reason to care about each primary and secondary character. As the story reaches its zenith, these story lines are woven together into an intense, scary scene. There is a strong Christian message that helps many of the characters get through not only the hostage crisis but also the trauma they have been enduring in their individual lives.
My one frustration with the novel was the angsty relationship between Rachel and Jake. For two people whose livelihood depends on reading people an open communication, you’d think they could have a conversation about their relationship issue. However, these two could barely get a complete sentence out before one of them huffed off. While this was done to prolong the angst, I found it vexing.
Overall, No Angels For Christmas is an engaging novel filled with empathetic characters. Ms. McCarty’s message of faith, kindness and compassion are suitable for all ages. Whether human or celestial, we could all use a guardian angel at times.
I found the story slow and had a hard time staying engaged. Overall the characters were engaging, although the two main characters of Jake and Rachel were annoying in the fact that they are adults with PhDs that can’t seem to talk to each other. There were a few twists that came out at the end that were entertaining but I felt that the story lagged in several areas with too many unnecessary details and characters. They added nothing to the story and took a lot of time to get through. It had a nice happy ending but I felt that one characters story didn’t really have a follow up at the end which was disappointing.

Good storyline, but the 2 main characters who are presumably well educated and mature tended to be aggravating at times with their lack of communication. Younger characters and their situations interesting. I received this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
