“If three characters were good in Big Little Lies, nine are even better in Nine Perfect Strangers.” —Lisa Scottoline, The New York Times Book Review
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies
Could ten days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty’s latest page-turner, nine perfect strangers are about to find out…
Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.
Frances Welty, the formerly best-selling romantic novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House nursing a bad back, a broken heart, and an exquisitely painful paper cut. She’s immediately intrigued by her fellow guests. Most of them don’t look to be in need of a health resort at all. But the person that intrigues her most is the strange and charismatic owner/director of Tranquillum House. Could this person really have the answers Frances didn’t even know she was seeking? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in everything Tranquillum House has to offer – or should she run while she still can?
It’s not long before every guest at Tranquillum House is asking exactly the same question.
Combining all of the hallmarks that have made her writing a go-to for anyone looking for wickedly smart, page-turning fiction that will make you laugh and gasp, Liane Moriarty’s Nine Perfect Strangers once again shows why she is a master of her craft.

The book was quite a ride! I thoroughly enjoyed the story of these characters. The stories were funny, horrifically sad, complicated, real, engrossing and enlightened. I would encourage others to read it.
Amazing! I read it in one day and will probably reread very soon. I love her books, grabs you right from the beginning and always a surprise. Thank you Liane for another incredible story!
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure at first but once I met all the characters I couldn’t put it down. For me, it was one of those books where you laugh and cry.
This book was very entertaining and smart . I truly enjoyed it .
Loved this book. They story got better and better as the chapters went on. I feel she new exactly when to end the story as well. I felt the ending was a little tooo perfect, but I won’t say anything else. Totally recommend!
Of all other Books, I liked this one the least. I just couldn’t get into it or relate to the people.
I did not like this book and really struggled through it. I actually decided to give up on it but was convinced by some friends that the ending was better so decided to just finish it.
This book was not for me. I found the characters unlikable and because there were so many I kept getting them confused. I thought the beginning of the book dragged on and the big “plot twist” in the middle was ridiculous and not that interesting. It was very disappointing considering how much I enjoyed Big Little Lies. Overall would not recommend. I know some people out there really enjoyed this book but I have no idea why. It was a slug to get through with no interesting payoff in the end.
Another great Liane Moriarty read. Great characters that were easily flawed but still mostly likeable. How we can make friendships with people we would not ordinarily befriend under normal circumstances.
Compared to Big Little Lies the characters in this book just lacked depth and personality. The book just becomes weird with no real climax. A disappointment
I loved this story. The characters were great and the story was so well written. I will be reading more by this author .
An odd but delightful book. It felt like it was having fun with bits of a few different genres – romance, psychological thrillers, a little Agatha Christie style mystery – and there’s some fun metafictional bits with one of the main characters being an author that highlight elements from different genres. But most of all it’s character studies, which Liane Moriarty is so good at. And enough suspense that I couldn’t stop reading once I started.
This book is so fresh. I didn’t feel as though I’d read the plot line a thousand times. I’ve heard some readers say it’s a slow starter, but I didn’t feel that way at all. I was caught up from the very first page. Such interesting characters!
Nine perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty a four-star read that will bring you together. I think I may be one of the few people who didn’t enjoy Big Little Lies, but I thought I would give the author another try as I thought maybe it was just me. I enjoyed this one more, but once again I didn’t think it was as great as everyone else no doubt will. That being said the one major positive this book has is how the author manages to get you to see the tiny details behind each character, she shows you what makes them tick that alone saved this book and made it a compelling read.
I really couldn’t put it down. The characters were really well flushed out and the plot took surprising twists and turns. I cried a lot at parts, which surprised me, but I was happy when I finished it.
This is one I hadn’t expected to enjoy as much as I did. The characters were well fleshed out. Dark humor abounds.
A fun read with multiple twists and turns.
“Nine Perfect Strangers” is somewhat of a departure from Liane Moriarty’s previous books. The book opens with a medical emergency in the office of a high-profile businesswoman, too busy to let paramedics interfere with her work.
Later, nine people arrive at Tranquillum House, a remote and very expensive resort, for a ten-day retreat, rejuvenation, reconnection, and rebuilding of relationships. They have diverse and detailed backgrounds, unique and different personalities, and complex and varied problems. They come with psychological baggage as well as physical baggage filled with forbidden items such as electronics, alcohol, and snacks that are immediately confiscated.
Moriarty introduces them one by one, as they settle in and prepare for the meditation, weight loss, and rebirth promised by the director. The plot is character driven, and readers get to know the diverse players through their thoughts and conversations. In typical Moriarty style, things happen behind the scenes that direct the journey to wellness, and readers learn that both the nine and the Tranquillum House staff have secrets — deep dark secrets.
As the nine continue on their journey, their startling secrets are revealed layer by layer, item by item, trauma by trauma. The nine are seeking answers, but readers find questions. Who will lose weight and who will lose his/her mind? Will they reconnect with family or disconnect from the world? Will they find inner peace or universal chaos? Does Tranquillum House provide valuable therapy or something else?
I listened to the audio book of “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Caroline Lee did an excellent job of voicing the very large diverse cast, and I had no trouble discerning the players. It is a long book, but Tranquillum House, its unusual guests, and even stranger staff kept me listening all the way to the odd, surprising, and yet satisfying end.
Liane Moriarty never disappoints. She does a wonderful job creating characters that readers are invested in and catapults you into their world in such a way you feel like you are there with them. Unique storyline, loveable characters and all around great book.
I am a huge Liane Moriarty fan… who isn’t?! The author of Big Little Lies does it again, this time at a remote health spa with nine guests visiting for different reasons, and a staff that will make you laugh and make you wonder about their sanity. Love her characters, so unique and complex.
I’ve read mixed reviews on this one, but I loved it. Can’t wait to see Nicole Kidman bring it to life.
