The New York Times bestselling graphic novel sensation from Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic. Kirkus says, “If you’re going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.”
Nemeses Dragons Science Symbolism All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel has been hailed by critics and fans alike as the arrival of a “superstar” talent (NPR.org).
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Read this over the course of a short plane ride! I loved that it starts out a little cutesy and whimsical and manages to keep those elements while also being a story about justice, love, and what it means to be a hero — or a monster. Highly recommend for fans of The Princess Bride and Adventure Time!
So many feels about Nimona, all of them good.
Wow. So, I picked up this book while Christmas shopping today, went into work, read it during the slow points of my shift, and finished it before my four-hour shift was even over. Granted, it’s a graphic novel, which usually means pretty speedy reading for me, but still! I devoured this book! It was so awesome- and I’m not sure quite why I haven’t given it five stars, except maybe having to read it in bursts as customers came in and out may have contributed to a lower rating, so when I (inevitably) reread this, it’ll probably get a rating upgrade. Nimona as a character was so wonderful, but I really fell in love with Blackheart. Both of them together gave me all the feels, and Goldenloin (I spent a good five minutes giggling at that name) was such an interesting take on the classic hero. This book was such a wonderful amalgamation of modern and medieval, good and evil, black and white and shades of grey. So. Many. Shades. Of. Grey.
Seriously, I would highly recommend.

That was a lot of fun AND a good lesson [just because one is different doesn’t mean one should be experimented on or treated badly or taught they are a monster] AND really kind of sad at the end. For a book I really knew little about and wasn’t jazzed with at the beginning, this ended up being really fun, quirky and very thought-provoking. Excellent!!
This is a graphic novel and therefore a bit different from what I usually read/recommend, but if you’ve never taken the dive into graphic novels, Nimona is the place to do it!
A graphic novel about two rival knights, a plan to save a kingdom and a mysterious girl. I found the details in the pictures of this graphic novel to be abundant that it took me longer to read each page because I was taking it in. I found myself rooting for Barrister and Nimona as they tried to save the kingdom from The Institution. There was a lot of action throughout that it kept me turning the page to see what would happen next.
What a ride! I really liked the artwork in this, it was really well done! I loved that it succeeded in being really graphic in deaths and monsters, without so much gore. Nimona, to me, is just a sweet, lost little girl, and I just want to give her a hug. Very, very emotional, the battles were epic, and I loved the journey with Nimona, Ballister, and Goldenloin.
Reading a graphic novel as an audiobook, is something new, and it was done super well!I loved the characters and the story arc. It was well done in a very quick story.
Reread June 2021 as a Graphic Novel. I enjoyed this much more than the audio. I felt like a had a sense of what was going on. I loved the relationship between Nimona and Ballister. It was such a cute back and forth. The art work was amazing. Definitely recommend!
This graphic novel was fantastic. Going into this story, I thought it would be fun and silly. And yes, it was, but it was also so much. There was real emotion behind the actions of the characters, and backstories that made me want to cry and root for them. I was not expecting the depth of the characters, but it was a welcomed addition, making the story far richer. While I always love a good villain, especially ‘protagonist’ villains, such as Lord Blackheart and Nimona, I especially loved finding out why they had become villains. There was such specific hurt in their past, and it was a delight to see them struggle with their past demons while deciding how they wanted to face their futures.
But just when the story threatened to get too sad or too dark, there would be some wacky antics, like Nimona become a shark person, walking around as a literal landshark. The combination of ‘modern’ technology in a medieval setting also created a strange-yet-wonderful world with old flavor and a contemporary feeling.
Absolutely wonderful. A story about deceptive appearances and the fact that, sometimes, the only difference between good and evil is who you ask.
I read this book awhile ago and I think it’s a really good imaginative book for kids who love to read about world-building and unconventional friendships. The characters are great and I really enjoy this book.
Read it
its awesome
This was a fun and surprising read. The pages pop and the story pulls you in. The concept of a side-kick wannabe seeking out a villain to minion for is only the beginning of this multilayered story. I thought I’d seen it all but was so glad to be wrong when reading this book.
The first thing that pulled me into this fantasy world, aside from the characters, was the blending of science and magic. This gothic-like society has some pretty high tech devices available to both sides of good and bad, but it’s definitely the magic that steals the show.
Then there’s the frenemy/bromance between the two main male characters. No spoilers here, but I like both of these characters, even when they are being bad.
Then there’s the titular character of Nimona. She’s a strong and powerful female lead with flaws and complexity galore. She’s probably the best troubled teen character I’ve read in a fantasy, in the past few years.
This story packs in a lot of action, intensity, and emotion, but there are some sweet and funny moments along the way. The simplistic drawings allow the reader to focus on the story without being pulled away until a slight change of color signifies something important. The writing and drawing styles compliment each other well to deliver a story, I can’t imagine being told any other way.
This book will likely become one of my yearly re-reads. Highly recommended to fans of YA Fantasy, Sci-fantasy, and Sword and Sorcery graphic novels.
I love the illustrations, mysteries, surprises and wit.
one of the better graphic novels I have read, Nimona was original and witty. If you enjoy graphic novels, i highly recommend this one. Although the content is different from that of Raina Telgemeier, the size is about the same. I read it in 1 hour, so it’s a quick read.
Nimona is a graphic novel about a young girl who wants to be a sidekick to the notorious villain Ballister Blackheart. He reluctantly takes her on as he battles the government and especially his nemesis Sir Goldenloin. But everything is not as it seems with the lines between hero and villain (and the feelings between the nemeses) getting blurred. Nimona herself isn’t sure whether she’s a villain, a hero, or a monster. This is one of those books that grabs you with its fun humour and then sneaks in and very nearly breaks your heart.
Unique idea for story! My daughter and I have both read it twice because once we finished we realized everything we missed the first time through. Fun read!
I had not heard of this book except for when it was on sale on Kindle. It apparently was a web comic that was published as a graphic novel. It’s not bad.
Nimona shows up at a villain’s house and demands to be his sidekick. He tells her to get lost until he finds out that she’s an impervious shape shifter. The comic has a medieval feel but with random modern technology.
