Welcome to the Nightworld Academy, attended by vampires, shifters, and witches. A place filled with harmony and mutual respect between the supernatural races. Sometimes. I’m told my curse is a gift. A valuable one that could cost me my life.My visions of the future are weird, but my new school is weirder. All lessons take place in the evening and the majority of students are on an advanced … majority of students are on an advanced program where they take extra classes late into the night.
I enrolled at the academy because my last school expelled me for punching another student. Nobody believed that I knocked Tyler unconscious to stop somebody else dying. But why would they believe the crazy girl?
I expected to meet other troubled teens here, but the pupils are predictable for an English boarding school. There’s Ash, the rugby team captain and the academy’s most popular guy. Then there’s Andrei, the moody guy with a bad attitude who takes pleasure in annoying me. And Jamie who’s studious and friendly but intense.
I thought I had the academy figured out: the mean girl, the quirky friend, the nerd, the emo, and the jock. But on the evening I swear allegiance to my new school house, everything spins out of control and I realise I’m dealing with more.
Much more.
One of us will die, and I know who.

I really like this story overall, but I’m a little torn on Maeve, the MC. I like how she is fierce in standing up for her friends, but at the same time towards the end I was getting a little frustrated with her judgmental attitude towards one of the characters. I really am intrigued by the guys Ash, Andrei, Jamie, and Tobias. I like the world that the author has created with the 3 paranormal races, and I loved all the HP references:) This seems to be a slow-burn RH, and in this book while there is some interest, there isn’t any steaminess.
Why did I wait so long to read a Swallow book? This book was absolutely fantastic!!! From the very first page we are pulled into Maeve’s life where she has visions in a world of humans who think she is crazy so she has to hide it. After an incident she is sent to the Nightworld Academy where she will enter the world of paranormals, magic and intrigue. World building you will never want to leave. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the slightly different take on vampires, shifters, and witches. I like that the main character makes mistakes and doesn’t readily accept her new world. Term 1 was a quick but interesting read and helped me pass an afternoon. I am excited to read the author’s other series and to see what happens next in this one.
This book is fantastic! It was difficult for me to put down once I started reading it. I love the characters, but especially Maeve. She has struggled for so long with abilities that she didn’t understand, but she has been strong throughout that struggle and it is nice to see when things begin to fall into place for her. Ash, Andrei, and Jamie are interesting and I am looking forward to seeing if they can work together to support Maeve. I am definitely looking forward to Term 2!
Audiobook Review:
I’m a big fan of paranormal romance books where the setting is an academy or school. I even like that setting in books that aren’t paranormal. So that was one interesting aspect for me when I came across this series. I also really like the whole multiple supernatural races all living and learning together to promote harmony among the races. In fact, there were several things about this story that I liked and worked for me. Even if that liking built over time. One such thing was the leading lady Maeve. She kind of grew on me as the story developed but I’m not completely sold on her yet. Honestly, she comes across a bit judgmental. And while I sometimes understand what she’s saying or where she’s coming from, it comes across more harshly from someone who knows so little about what’s going on around her. But honestly that’s the main reason I’m trying to cut her some slack and not just dismiss her as unlikeable. She comes to the academy completely oblivious to the truth of her world and is thrown into a whole lot quite suddenly.
The pacing and plot of the story was pretty enjoyable and I did find that it held my attention quite easily. The “love interests” that make up the reverse harem Ash, Jamie, and Andrei were all well introduced and interesting. And I liked Maeve’s roommate Amelia as well. Another plus that helped my overall enjoyment was the really good narrator choices. Sarah L. Colton and Steve Campbell both did great jobs.
I do plan to check out book two. I was entertained enough to want to continue, and I am holding out hope that the more Maeve learns about everything, the more open she’ll be to some of the actions of those around her. I don’t need her to have a complete personality change or anything, just to not come across like her opinion is the only right one. One thing I also wish had been different was that in the description I was made aware just how slow burn this reverse harem would be. It’s basically clean and barely romance for this first story. I’m all for characters getting to know each other and taking their time, but there is barely acknowledgement of attraction and I wasn’t really expecting that at all.
Such a fun listen! To find out that you aren’t crazy after all but actually have a very strong talent that may or may not cause even more problems makes for a very interesting listen. This book leaves with a little bit of a cliffhanger so I will be looking for Term two soon.
This was my first LJ Swallow’s book. This is the first book in the Nighworld Academy, a YA/NA series, and slow burn RH story. This is a great introduction to the series. The world building is complex and intriguing. Maeve, Ash, Andrei, and Jamies are great and interesting characters. The story has magic, mystery and romance, with vampires, shifters, and witches. Sarah Colton and Steve Campbell did a great job with the narration. I love their voices together. Now, I can’t wait for the next book in the Series. #AudiobookObsession
A fantastic listen. This read grabs you right away. It kept me inthralled from the first to the last. The Narrator brought out the Characters fantastic. Its like I could see the scenes in my minds eye as I listened. The Author has done a fantastic job at the World building. As well as bringing out the characters emotions. I love the humor as well. If your a supernatural reader and Academy lover this is definitely the read for you. I definitely recommend this more than 5 star read.

I was only going to give this book 2 stars because I dislike the main character, Maeve, A LOT! Maeve a whiny, self righteousness, I’m better than you, know it all. I decided to do 3 stars because I actually really like the rest of the characters, the story, and I’m hoping Maeve will pull her head out of her butt now that she’s seen how her actions put all of her friends in danger. *fingers crossed*.
This starts out very slow. It’s a bit confusing in the beginning. If you can stuck with, it gets better. I am going to give book 2 a try in hopes of a better Maeve.
Nightworld Academy: Term One by LJ Swallow is a new upper YA/NA series of magic academy books that I listened to on audio narrated by Sarah Colton and Steve Campbell.
This is the first book of LJ’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. The story does end on a cliffhanger so I can’t wait to dive into Nightworld Academy: Term Two.
Sarah and Steve did an amazing job on the narration. They really made the story come to life with their accents and tones for each character.

I just love this book and series. I could not put it down. Ash’s brother is back… or is he? Andrei is spending more time with the group. Amelia is really struggling with things. Tobasis is opening up more. And then we have Maeve… I really want to like her, but she needs to grow up and not be so wishy washy… does this take away from my love of this book? Not at all… just makes me want to read more to see if she finally grows up. And the mystery that surrounds the Academy and the students? I need to know what is going on
L.J. Swallow has done a fantastic job of drawing me into the new world she has created in her Night World Academy. From the very start I was hooked and she never let me go. I devoured this book. When I had to put the book down – to live in the real world, the characters she created lingered in my thoughts. I couldn’t wait to get back to find out what would happen next.
When Maeve is sent to the Nightworld Academy, she has no idea what she is in store for. This strange new school is more than she ever knew exhisted in this world. Vampires, Shifters, and Witches were things she had only heard of on television and in the movies. Little did she know she was among them.
She’d always wondered why she got strange visions and did her best to hide the fact she was different from those around her. But at this new school, she is not the only one with unique abilities. When she finally discovers who she is and what she is capable of, she’s forced with the delimma of choosing to tell others the truth or keep her thoughts to herself.
Well, secrets of her nature can’t be kept for long. But the question is – will she be able to stop the visions from happening?
I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Well done, L.J. Swallow. I love the world you created and need Term two ASAP.
PS – The narration to this book only brought L.J. Swallow’s words to life. Sarah Colton and Steve Campbell were fantastic at their performance in this story. I am new to them as narrators, but this will not be the last I listen to them.
I love all L.J Swallow books and this one is no different.
The main character is very interesting. The story has a lot of things going on. From inside the main houses to trying to defend the school. There are a lot of unanswered questions. It seems like she is being pulled towards multiple people but no romance begins with any. There is a lot of information that I want to know so I will continue the series. This audiobook has dual narrators and I really enjoyed this duo.

I have read a lot of other RH series by LJ Swallow but for some reason I hadn’t picked this one up yet. I am so glad I got to listen to it on audio because the narrators really brought this story to life in my head. I haven’t been listening or reading the recent releases in the supernatural/paranormal academy book genre, but I enjoyed this story and characters LJ has created and look forward to more!
I hadn’t listened to any audiobooks by these 2 narrators and they pleasantly surprised me. Added them to my “good/awesome” list for sure. I wish there had been more Steve to be honest, but that was all dependent on the storyline and chapter POVs really. I did enjoy during and after the confrontation at the end his various accents/changes in the intonation. I could figure out the different characters very well. I thought Sarah did a good job with Maeve and the supporting characters (esp Kathryn). I could feel the various emotions Sarah portrayed, very good job!
Regarding the actual story, I really enjoyed the different creatures/beings that are included and the odes to Harry Potter made me giggle and smile. I think I actually liked the supporting characters more than the MC, which is why I couldn’t give the story 5 stars. I think she has a lot of room to grow which is great for the overarching story. I just think as the book went on, I wasn’t connecting with her as much/was yelling at her to just tell people what she saw haha. I definitely am interested to see what happens between her and the various men in her life. I couldn’t pick my fav, but Andrei was probably winning just a tad. I thought he had some amazing vulnerable moments that left me wanting to know more about him. I usually go for the nerd buuuut not this time haha.
I definitely am going to listen to book 2 right away, I need to know what happens next! Totally recommend this series and give two thumbs up to these narrators, for anyone looking for a new supernatural story to get lost in

This is the first book in the Nightworld Academy series. The storyline was well written and very detailed. The author went to great depths to create this world and give us a great introduction to these interesting characters. With witches, vampires, shifters and hunters this novel was an awesome paranormal YA story and I can’t wait to read more. While I loved the characters in this novel the main f character was a bit immature and I’m hoping her characters matures and we see her growth and development in the coming books.
The audiobook was narrated by Sarah Colton and Steve Campbell. They both did an excellent job with these characters. They created different voices for each character and really brought the story to life. I enjoyed listening to them narrate this novel.
Nightworld Academy was an awesome start to a new paranormal series and I would highly recommend it to all YA paranormal lovers.
This was a new to me author, and new to me narrators. I have recently started to get into PNR books, and I love that mixed with the YA. The story was very well written, I loved the characters. The narrations was also very enjoyable, the performance made each character very real.

Sarah Colton and Steve Campbell bring these characters to life so very well that story jumped out at me through my headphones. I could easily tell who was who with both narrators which I really love.
I so enjoyed this story and the world that is slowly revealed throughout the book. The characters really intrigued me and I really like the fact that Maeve is hesitant and unsure. It’s a different take on things and I like how she has to work through her own ideas. I still have questions which I hope will be answered I the next book. It’s a brilliant start to the series and I can’t wait to see what happens next
I’m not really sure what to think about this book. I like it, the characters seem promising, the world building is great but the plot…I don’t know what to think of it. I don’t feel as if we get any answers in this book which is frustrating for me because I’m more of a ‘I want to see her in full glory, kicking butt’ but this seems to be more of a suspenseful type plot. I will be reading the next one since I like reading L.J. Swallow and I think this series has promise.
Overall: 3.5/5
I really enjoyed this book. Looking forward to the next one!
