Stephen King at his best
I listened to this and while I enjoyed it I could not give it a 5. After each story, I gave each a rating and after that, it came to 3.7 stars but I, of course, had to round up. The anthology contains twenty (20) stories but has been broken up into 3 volumes. This is volume one which contains 8 stories of varying lengths. This is an all-star cast who performs each with skill. I actually also enjoyed trying to guess who was reading what based on their voice alone.
“Suffer the Little Children” read by Whoopie Goldberg. Mrs. Sidley has been a teacher for many years and during that time has demanded the respect of charges. This year she has started to see some monstrous changes in the children and soon tries to take care of the problem. 3 stars
“Crouch End” read by Tim Curry. There is a small town that is not what it appears to be and those who wander in do not always make it out. While many people know about this place they do not warn strangers of the danger they may be in while going from one place to another. 4 stars
“Rainy Season” read by Yeardley Smith. In a small Maine Town rainy season comes once every seven years. While the locals know that it is a time to stay in their homes and lock up it is not so for the tourists who visit. Even when warned they cannot believe the reason and so leave themselves open to disaster. 5 stars
“Dolans Cadillac” read by Rob Lowe. When a man’s wife is murdered by a mobster for agreeing to testify against him the man plots revenge. Dolan has continued to live his life as this man, a teacher works to make sure that he and his precious car are never seen again. 4.5 stars
“The House on Maple Street” read by Tabitha King. After spending the summer abroad the four Bradbury children return home to find that something is growing upward inside the walls of their house. As it grows they devise a plan to use it to get rid of the unhappiness being brought into their lives. 3.5 stars
“Umney’s Last Case” read by Robert B. Parker. Clyde Umney inhabits a noir world of gumshoes and newsboys. One day his world starts to change and he hates to change so what is going on. Then he meets Sam Landry who relates a tale to him that is sad and which propels him into something he cannot understand. 4 stars
“Head Down” read by Stephen King. This is not a story but an essay that he wrote about all things Baseball. Little League baseball in particular. Never was partial to Baseball in the first place and this was way too long for my taste. 2.5 stars
“Brooklyn August” read by Stephen J Gould. This is a poem, about Baseball. 2.5 stars
The stories were good in most cases and I always enjoy pretty much everything written by King. This was no exception and should be enjoyed by all.
If you like Stephen King’s writing style then you will enjoy this book. It may not have been my favorite, but it is an excellent read.
One of my favorites. I truly enjoyed this book. This is one I read in one day, I just could not put it down.
Love these books!
Thrilling
It was great some of King’s best work
Always enjoyed mr. Kings style and twisted imagination.
A great compilation of short stories that will keep you up at night. Some of King’s more realistic thrillers and horror stories. It’s a must-read if you like Stephen King.
