‘Wow!… Kept me up into the night. I couldn’t put this book down!… Highly recommend!’ NetGalley reviewer, 5 stars
For fans of Stephen King, Mark Edwards and The Haunting of Hill House comes a dark tale of a mysterious house haunted by tragedy.
The Nightingale House is a new beginning for widower Daniel Price and his young daughter Caitlyn. After months of grief, this will be the place where they … Caitlyn. After months of grief, this will be the place where they start their life as a family of two.
But something is wrong—Daniel can’t settle. There’s an odd, cold feeling in the master bedroom, and a mysterious dripping noise that seems to move from room to room. Whispers of I can’t sleep echo through the corridors, long into the night.
And then Daniel uncovers the chilling story of the family who lived in the house years before, of betrayal, tragedy, and murder. Could the Nightingale House be not the home Daniel dreamed of for his daughter—but a place that will bring their worst nightmares to life?

Nightingale House by Steve Frech is a light horror story about a recently widowed writer, Daniel Price, and his young daughter, Caitlyn, who move to a beautiful historic house by a lake in the hope of starting a new life. Soon after their arrival, strange and terrifying things start happening to Daniel. It’s obvious to him that something sinister is going on at Nightingale House, but what?
This was a thoroughly creepy and addictive read. It is told from the perspectives of Daniel and a young woman named Rebecca, with Daniel’s story being in the present and Rebecca’s story set in 1900. The writing flowed effortlessly, and I thought the author did a fantastic job of creating a foreboding atmosphere and keeping the reader on their toes. I loved the characters of Daniel and Caitlyn and their father/daughter relationship was very heartwarming. This story left me feeling unsettled at times, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that it was scary. More than anything, it’s a story about coping with grief and trying to heal after a loved one’s death. Overall, I thought Nightingale House was a classic ghost story, and I highly recommend it. I will definitely be reading more by Steve Frech.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ Digital for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank HQ Digital and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book.
The story takes place at the Nightingale house and up there will be a new beginning for Daniel Price widower and his daughter Caitlyn.
Except that Daniel can’t find his feet in this house, he feels a cold sensation in the bedroom and a sort of dripping moving from room to room. Someone seems to whisper late at night: “I can’t sleep”. And Daniel will learn more about the family that used to live there. It seems that there was betrayal and murder.
A book read in one go so much I was hooked on the story so gripping, addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists with very endearing characters.
Omg what a story!!!! Kept me going right on up to the end…excellent job and yes I did download the next book of yours.
This was a fabulous book! The plot was extremely interesting–I couldn’t put it down! It got my attention from the first page. The characters were believable and interesting, and the plot was a surprise every chapter. I enjoyed it so much that I went on B&N’s website and ordered another book by the same author. I’m sure I will love that one as well. Make sure you read this book!
Loved this book good ole creepy story!
In Maine, on a quiet street is a beautiful older home, loved by the previous owners. But now Daniel and his 8 year old daughter Caitlyn move in and the home reacts to their presence.
Perhaps it is reacting to Daniel’s grief, guilt, and anger over the death of his wife Nicole. Or the appearance of his daughter, full of imagination, curiosity and dealing with the loss of her mom.
Daniel being a writer is under stress to start a new book and help ready Caitlyn for school plus try and make the best of their lives in a home Nicole was so excited to buy.
Between sighs, whispers, shadows and the images of Nicole, Daniel is a man on the edge. I began to fear for Caitlyn as his lack of sleep, grief and guilt took over and the house came alive.
Having Mildred, an older neighbor with a great sense of humor and empathy, observe the changes in Daniel added to the drama. And a journal of a girl falling in love with an older man, married and a parent seemed to have happened in this home. Mr. Carrington had his eye on this girl, Rebecca. She details her life and the mystery of Mr. Carrington’s missing daughter, Kathy…close to Caitlyn’s age.
Atmospheric, scary at times, blending the past with the present, you see a family coming apart from loss……or is the house playing a role in it? Is Kathy in the house? Why now? 3.8 stars
Could not put this book down! Highly recommend!
Loved it ! I hope to read more books by this author.
It took a while for the story to start to unfold…a lot of time was taken with Character-background building. I did like the way the author flipped back and forth from 1900 tp present day to provide some of the plot background.
Others reviewers said this book was scary. I agree, but it is also heartbreaking. I loved the characters.
The Nightingale House is a a fast-paced light horror story about a widower and his young daughter who move into a beautiful historic home. Shortly after moving in strange and terrifying things begin to happen. The master bedroom seems cold and uninvited, there are strange dripping noises and whispers in the night. Something is lurking in this house but what or who is it?
Nightingale house quickly draws you in and doesnt let go. The combination of the easily flowing storyline, characters that are developed phenomenally and a tense and foreboding atmosphere meld together to create one satisfying ghost story.
More than your average ghost story, Nightingale House is a story about the struggles of loss, coping with your grief and finding the strength and courage to move on.
Overall I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

“I can’t sleep…”
Daniel Price finally has it all—loving family, successful writing career and moving into their dream house. But in the blink of an eye, tragedy strikes, and Daniel finds himself a single father picking up the pieces and trying to move on for the sake of his daughter, Caitlyn. But his dream home suddenly starts taking on a life of it’s own…whispers in the dark, shadows that resemble something more, and nightmares that plague Daniel to the point of exhaustion. When Caitlyn begins to insist her imaginary friend is real, Daniel starts investigating the history of the house, and discovering the dark secrets hidden within Nightingale House…
As a lover of anything haunted house/paranormal related, I’m thrilled to say that Nightingale House did not leave me wanting for a good scare! From the beginning pages, I was captivated till the very end! Steve Frech just got promoted to my must-read author list! Highly recommend!
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
I read very few supernatural books. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this. It has just the right amount without being over-the-top. I enjoyed it and would likely recommend.
Thank you #netgalley and #hqdigital for this eARC.
This ARC was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the story of a father and his eight-year old daughter that move into an old house with a history of its own. This is interspersed with diary entries from 1900. These entries and the present day story intertwine. This is the story of a haunted house, and what led to the events of the previous owners not leaving. The ending was a page-turner for me. I like some stories about haunted houses and this one fit. It wasn’t too terribly creepy or scary.
