Nightchaser is book one in a brand new series, Endeavor, by Amanda Bouchet. It’s got heartache, betrayal, secrets, lose, action, and so much more.
I had a delightful time reading Bouchet’s Fantasy trilogy The Kingmaker Chronicles and was excited to read her new Sci-Fi Romance.
Tess Bailey is a women on the run and everyone is out kill her. At the begging Tess is strong and decisive on her decisions, but then Shade comes into the picture and she seams to loss something. I was disappointed in this, but hopeful she will grow. She hasn’t had an easy life and it won’t be getting any easier. I will say I was shocked on the reveal of who she is and the thing about her blood is interesting. I’m curious to learn more on that aspect. As for Shade, the love interest, I liked him enough. I could understand his dilemma, it felt like something we all could go through, thou I think he should have told her what was what sooner. Both Tess and Shade have some flaws.
I will say I very much enjoyed the secondary characters. I really liked Tess’s intersection with them and that they support her. The other character I found fascinating was this strange guy Tess and her crew find on the science station they stole. We only see him a little at the beginning and then again near the end. He’s a mystery and I like mysteries.
The world-building is easy to understand. Their aren’t any unnecessary details, and the information we do get is spread out nicely. The author did a nice job in giving us snippets of Tess’s past. I liked what we got, when we got it, and that it’s not overwhelming.
I had a delightful time reading Nighchaser. I will say that some of it felt like filler. The begging and end where outstanding, both in capturing the readers attention. The romance I’m not so on board with. It was way to fast and felt more like attraction, desire, and sex then falling in love. Their are still more books so, maybe we will see growth in that area and in some of the characters. The action, mystery, and politics kept my attention. I could have done with out the fast romance.
Nightchaser is full of action and political intrigue. This is only the begging.

I’m finally catching up with Amanda Bouchet’s foray into SFR – and this book totally rocks! Shade is a surprising, and delicious, hero – and Tess is a great heroine. Tough on the outside, with a soft, candy sweet heart, she takes us on an epic adventure. Definitely recommend!

Amanda Bouchet’s books are crack for my reading soul!
I loved Amanda’s Kingmaker Chronicles (start with A Promise of Fire if you haven’t read the series yet!), and even though Nightchaser was a totally different setting—sci-fi space instead of Greek-mythology-inspired epic fantasy world—it was just as much fun! If a feisty rebel heroine, found-family crew, and a space rogue with a heart of gold sound like your cup of tea, check this one out.
Non-stop action and a cast of characters that you’ll want as your best friends!
This series opener is intriguing, sexy, and hard to put down. A terrific summer read!
Terrific and action packed beginning. Captain Tess Bailey has stolen something very important to the Dark Watch. And they want it back. And they want her too. She manages to escape to a planet to make repairs on her ship. And meets Shade Ganavan. And sparks fly. Will he be her savior or her worst enemy?? Loved the book!
A journey across the stars full of excitement, adventure, suspense and love. A universe under the dark and oppressive thumb of a ruthless leader. A Rebel force that fights for freedom. One woman trying to survive and protect those she loves as long as she can with secrets she shares with only a select few. A great start to a new series!
Nightchaser is the first of a new series, Endeavor, by Amanda Bouchet. Tessa Bailey, the ship’s captain, is a woman with a mysterious past riddled with secrets. She and her rag tag crew are on the run after stealing a floating lab that could change the tide of an upcoming war. Shade Ganavan, sexy yet arrogant stranger with ambiguous motivations, makes repairs on her ship. His attraction to Tess puts him in a dilemma. The story has romance, heartache, betrayal, secrets, loss. It’s action-packed with sci-fi romance and adventure. It flows between Tess’s first person POV and Shade’s third person POV. The world-building is easy to understand. Reader gets snippets of Tess’s past as the plot moves quickly with twist and turns of events.
Great read! I love this author! If you have read her Kingmaker Chronicles series then you know you will not be disappointed. In this book we Tess and a motley crew of characters that are the Nightchasers. Together you can say that they are the Robin Hoods of the future in this sci-fi romance and adventure. I truly loved Tess and the fact that she was no wimp and was a take charge kind of Captain, full of humor. Then we have the love interest Shade Ganavan who is just endless charm and a bit of arrogance and makes Tess a bit wary of him, at first. The world building is fantastic, like I said before if you have read her previous Trilogy, then you know her imagination knows no bounds! I totally enjoyed this read and look forward to many more from this author!!! 4.5 stars****
****I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book provided by NetGalley*****
1 ½ —- DNFed at 47%
When I saw this and got approved for it on Netgalley I was super excited. Even when I started reading, it really started out good……….
But sadly after about 12% in, it went downhill, and when I say downhill I mean a steeeeeppppp hill.
Pretty much when she meets the main love interest, it goes downhill. Tess just becomes sooo dumb and oh so weak in the knees and pretty much just lusts after him all this time.
You would think all that is bad enough but that is not all, the story is completely taken over by the romance….. Shane our main guy seems more douche than alpha hero and sometimes felt forced to be macho funny. The same for Tess.. She also felt forced at times and there is not much to her, very blah and two dimensional and flat. The only thing I enjoyed about her was her friendship with her crew.
A lot of the story felt like a filler, and most of it didn’t even make sense really, people disappear and reappear for no reason, other parts of the story are thrown in and make no sense whatsoever.
And yes I only read 47% of the book and then cheated and read the last few chapters, well everything I thought I figured out at 20 some percent was right, it was very predictable and again some things didn’t even make sense. Not because I didn’t read it all, no but because it didn’t fit into the main story arc.
Another thing for me personally was, the switching of POV. I love multiple povs in a book, what I don’t love is when they alternate between first and third person. Either it should be all in first person or all in third person, but that is just my personal preference.
Overall, I really wanted to like this book, I really did but I just couldn’t there are just way too many things that annoyed me that I couldn’t even really finish the book.
I hope that other people enjoy it more and can overlook some of the things.
I rate it 1 ½
This first in a series from Fantasy Romance author, Amanda Bouchet, NIGHTCHASER (Endeavor #1) blasts onto the scene as a very enjoyable science fiction romance. Captain Tess Bailey and her crew are rebel fighters who take from the wealthy but most especially, the seriously evil Overseer who rules their universe with an iron and deadly fist. Pursued by the dreaded enforcers known as the Dark Watch, they make a heart stopping seemingly impossible narrow escape limping to Albion 5 to repair their ship which has some extremely precious stolen cargo. Tess meets the enigmatic and decidedly handsome Shade Ganavan who while helping to repair her ship, steals his way into her heart. Just as Tess has many secrets and a mission to protect not only her crew, but the place she calls home, Shade is holding back critical information as well.
During their rebel activities, Tess and her crew come across something which might be a huge game changer determining the outcome of a looming war to take down the totalitarian government run by the Overseer. This federation in space known as the Dark comprised of star systems and Sectors may have peace; however, that enforced harmony comes at the price of total domination and a world washed of much of what makes the spirit soar including literature, art, and even colors other than drab browns, grey, and black.
Shade’s attraction to Tess runs deep which puts him in an almost untenable dilemma. If he gives in to his heart, then Shade may just be throwing away everything he has been working for including making some questionable choices to achieve an intensely desired goal. Tess has strong feelings for Shade as well that could get in the way of some very difficult decisions she has to make as a rebel captain with many relying on her for their future survival.
Tess and Shade’s story combines all the best qualities of a thrill ride space epic including gripping action and heart pounding adventures, interwoven with an overarching love story that adds heart and heat. This story works well on several levels for readers who enjoy not only romance, but Science Fiction with adrenaline-charged outer space exploits. Ms. Bouchet’s well-crafted tale and excellent writing make me quite happy as a reader to go on this literally stellar journey with strong characters, an exciting story, and exhilarating possible outcomes to see how the adventure will continue in the next book of the series.
Action packed, adventurous, sexy fun! What an exciting and fresh story with an amazing cast of characters. An excellent introduction to a new series, I can’t wait for more!
What a rush! From the opening heart-pounding chapter to the last one Ms. Bouchet keeps you on the edge of your seat with this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect in this new series because her previous trilogy KINGMAKER CHRONICLES was epic fantasy stories. Jumping from that genre to space opera could have been a stretch, but Ms. Bouchet does it with aplomb.
This new series follows Captain Tess Bailey and her ragtag crew. They are the night chasers–stealing medicine, food and whatever else is needed to delivering them to the orphans all the while running from the Dark Watch. Following a harrowing escape, Tess hires Shade to fix her ship before she can outrun the evil minions again. Shade is a bounty hunter for the empire and when he finds out the bounty on Tess’s head, he struggles with what to do. Should he turn her over to the Dark Watch or follow his growing attraction and the need to keep her safe?
The plot moves along quickly. Just when you think Tess and her crew are momentarily safe, another twist takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. I was so invested in this story, I didn’t want it to end. Ms. Bouchet has written a story that will knock your socks off with the tension, emotion and action throughout the story. I can’t wait for book 2!
What a fantastic read! Amanda Bouchet is quite the story teller and I loved this futuristic space world she has created!
Tess, the female lead was so fierce and brave. She has such a sense of right no matter the consequences. She’s a true rebel at heart. The mystery surrounding her has me anxious to find out more about her and what she can do.
Shade is just plain awesome. He struggles with a huge decision in this first book and he fights his attraction to Tess. That didn’t stop him from protecting her from the first moment he layed eyes on her. He is going to make for a great hero in this series.
The suspense around Tess and her crew’s fight for survival had me at the edge of my seat. The side characters were great and brought more to the story.
This was a fun book to read. It doesn’t end on a huge cliffhanger but it does set up the story for the next phase. I will be anxiously waiting for book two.
Rogue hero, rebel heroine, and a solid sci-fi backbone to make this Battlestar Galactica and Dark Matter fan grin. Amanda Bouchet has nailed it. Sexy sci-fi perfection!
I’m gobsmacked by how fluidly Amanda Bouchet moved from gods and centaurs to cruisers and spacewalks. Tessa Bailey, the Nightchaser of the title, provides support and needed materials to worlds under the thumb of the Overseer. She avoids capture by a combination of shrewdness and determination and the loyalty of her small crew until one close call brings her to the attention of her enemy and of Shade Ganavan, “space rogue.” Shade is a perfect foil, a bounty hunter tempted by a bounty that could redeem his lost inheritance. If only he wasn’t losing himself to the woman that bounty is on. This being an Amanda Bouchet novel, Tessa has a secret she only imperfectly understands, one that is deadly to herself and dangerous to the universe.
3.5/5
The first of a trilogy set in space featuring Tess Bailey, a rebel (with a special blood type) who has been thwarting her father’s (the Overseer) rule of the galaxy.
Leading a ragtag crew, she tries to avoid the Dark Watch military forces and discovers she has a bounty on her head. She meets Shade Ganavan, a charming some time bounty hunter and while attracted to him is not sure she can trust him.
I had hoped for a little stronger start as her previous Kingmaker trilogy provided. A few elements seemed similar between the two series (as well as to the Star Wars franchise). But overall I liked Tess (heart of gold) and her crew, and I’m hoping to like Shade more if he will stop with the occasional “baby” and “sugar” nicknames for Tess.
I plan to continue with the second book and see where it leads.
Found family. A spaceship. Lovely, lovely romance. Underdogs battling the Overseer. What’s not to love about this book?
