Stephen King’s first collection of short stories showcases the darkest depths of his brilliant imagination and will “chill the cockles of many a heart” (Chicago Tribune). Featuring “Jerusalem’s Lot,” the basis for the upcoming tv series Chapelwaite. Here we see mutated rats gone bad (“Graveyard Shift”); a cataclysmic virus that threatens humanity (“Night Surf,” the basis for The Stand); a … humanity (“Night Surf,” the basis for The Stand); a possessed, evil lawnmower (“The Lawnmower Man”); unsettling children from the heartland (“Children of the Corn”); a smoker who will try anything to stop (“Quitters, Inc.”); a reclusive alcoholic who begins a gruesome transformation (“Gray Matter”); and many more shadows and visions that will haunt you long after the last page is turned.

This was the second King book I read, and I was totally surprised by how horrifically fascinating each of the stories in it were. It has now been over 40 years since I read it, and yet I remember it vividly.
Great stories. Classic.
His novels are great. His short stories can be brilliant. Quitters, Inc. was one of my favorites…wonder how many people would still smoke if pressed with that method.
I always enjoy a good Stephen King book
GREAT ANTHOLOGY FOR HORROR LOVERS.
Some of these stories are good
If you’ve never read Stephen King & would like to just get your toes wet before diving into a novel … Then this short story collection is the perfect place to start … Classic King & still one of his best anthologies … If you’re thirsty for another shorts collection read Skeleton Crew … & When you’re ready for a novel try The Shining, It, Needful Things or Misery …
This was the first Stephen King book I ever read, so my feelings are tinted with hues of nostalgia. I am a big fan of Stephen King’s short stories – this is his first collection, and it is consistently spooky, creative, and dark. A classic.
