“One of the most thrilling writers working today. Miss him at your peril.” – Blake Crouch, Wayward Pines
A near-future spinoff of the bestselling AFTER post-apocalyptic thriller series.
NEXT #1: AFTERBURN
Five years after a devastating solar storm wipes out civilization and spawns a strange race of mutants, Rachel Wheeler and her misfit family must choose whether to hide away or fight to join … hide away or fight to join other survivors.
As their food supply dwindles inside their bunker, radiation from abandoned nuclear plants is altering the world around them. Not only are the mutants building their own cities and weapons, the remaining dregs of the U.S. military are massing for an attack. In this decaying environment, hostile new creatures crawl out from the crevices and up from the waterways to threaten them all.
But as a half-mutant, Rachel’s choice isn’t as simple as mere survival—the mutant way of life might be more promising than anything humans could hope to restore. And Rachel’s next decision could tear apart her family and the entire world.

I’m a fan of Scott Nicholson, but this book is a bit of a departure from his others. Still, he has created an original premise for his version of the post-apocalyptic world. The characters are realistic and entertaining…if a bit screwed up after the lights go out and everything that moves is trying to rip you apart and eat you.
I especially appreciated his creation of a human like species that may or may not become the next dominant creature on earth. I’m sure this book is the first of many on the subject. Good job, Scott!
Full disclosure: I’ve read a lot of Scott’s works. Second disclosure: I think he’s a cool guy. We’re not BFFs or anything, but we’ve interacted as horror writers for several years and I’ve never had anything but good experiences bumping into him. That’s not relevant to any of his books, but it’s relevant to the fact that I always prefer to support cool people, given the choice.
Which brings me to THIS book.
AFTERBURN is a fun one – the first in a series – that is a post-apocalyptic look at our world five years after a solar storm hits the hard reset on humanity. Mutants and survivors are in a constant state of tension, and food and other resources are scarce.
The main character, Rachel Wheeler, is a determined and tough woman (she has her arc, but there’s always strength there), who finds out some things about herself that shift her focus and the major questions she has to answer as she figures out not just how to survive, but whether she wants to survive as human… or something else.
Great book, the same fun that I expect from Scott Nicholson. Read it.
So intresting
Good book! I want to read the rest of them!
I liked the book but for me I was half way through and wasn’t getting any further. It’s not that it wasn’t entertaining just wasn’t into it anymore
New take on a mutation nation!
Scott Nicholson has created an post-apocalyptic thriller about a global catastrophe unleashed on the world by a massive solar storm. Radiation and the storms EMP surge have brought technology to a halt and caused widespread mutation across species including humans. Non-mutants struggle for survival against the Zaps and an animal world that is reminiscent of the age of dinosaurs. Chaos and aggression rule – everything seems to have humans on their menu!
There was a lot packed into the storyline but I enjoyed the characters, the plot was sound, and I liked the concept. The only thing I have against the book is that it ends with a cliffhanger. It could have seriously benefited from one more round of editing. I received a complimentary copy but my opinions are honest and voluntary Overall, I enjoyed the book and would like to read more books in this series.
A small group of human survivors battle superior, genius mutants after the apocalyse. Fast paced with plot twists. Interesting enough that I bought the next in the series to see what happens to the survivors.
This can be an interesting series. I know it is hard to get the character developed in a short number of pages. There are so many different ways this book can go. Looking forward to start the rest of the books.
couldn’t put these down – read they whole series.
Good book
It was okay. Kind of slow reading.
is was ok because the plot was about a bear and that beres name was ok and ya
wasn’t as good as I’d thought it would be
Scott is exceptional at developing interesting unlockable characters, and you enjoy seeing their participation develop in the story, I certainly hope to read more
Would like more character development
Think might have been too short, the characters where on surface.
The storyline was good.
Typical chest beating males in charge, women as an afterthought
It was okay. I really enjoyed the characters. Really hated the end, if you could call it that. Most books in my opinion, even if there are 4 or more parts to it, will at least wrap things up toward the end. I will not continue to read the rest of the books, Or read from this author again.
Too choppy and unorganized for my taste.
A little clunky in reading, but has an interesting plot.
