Winner of the David J. Langum, Sr., Prize in American Historical Fiction Named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post and “Required Reading” by the New York Post Edward Rutherfurd celebrates America’s greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga, weaving together tales of families rich and poor, native-born and immigrant—a cast of fictional and true characters whose fates rise and … fictional and true characters whose fates rise and fall and rise again with the city’s fortunes. From this intimate perspective we see New York’s humble beginnings as a tiny Indian fishing village, the arrival of Dutch and British merchants, the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the convulsions of the Civil War, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the trials of World War II, the near demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the 1990s, and the attack on the World Trade Center. A stirring mix of battle, romance, family struggles, and personal triumphs, New York: The Novel gloriously captures the search for freedom and opportunity at the heart of our nation’s history.

All of his books are a must-read. I think all World History Classes should make all his books part of the curriculum. Much more informative than a dry lecture from the teacher. A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down. Please check out Mr. Rutherfurds other books. He brings history to life.
It contains a lot of interesting bits of trivia.
A WONDERFUL BOOK YOU WILL LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!
I enjoyed this book and I learned so much about the history of New York !!!
Anything Rutherford writes is very interesting..
This was an amazing book. Well developed characters that turned history into an interesting, unforgettable story. I will reread this book in the future.
Historical fiction at its best. Well-developed characters based on sound research. Fast-moving and engaging. Audiobook was marvelous. Characters truly came to live. Recommended to all mature audiences.
Rutherford is alway splendid reading.
This is a generous, history loving saga to be read and reread every decade or so. Absolutely a must read before a visit to New York.
This is how history class should be. I have read most of Mr. Rutherford’s books and I have yet to be disappointed. This book is so well researched and the characters come to life in a way that kept me glued to the page.
This book was excellent and I couldn’t put it down. Very good history of New York, how it came to be such an important city and why it still is. Love, love, loved it!
A look into the story of the beginnings of NYC told in a fictionalized manner.
Anything by Mr. Rutherford is worth reading. The characters are believable and the storyline is realistic. Of course my favorite is Sarum.
Great story and the history was well researched.
Great history author
Great read.
When they say a book is an epic, I’m pretty sure this is the type of book they’re referring to. I feel like I’ve read an entire series of novels, each covering a portion of U.S. history witnessed through the lens of New York City and the generations of the intermingled Van Dyck and Master families and a few carefully selected peripheral …
I have every one of Rutherford’s books, each one better than the other. It’s a great way to study history as he makes it come alive.
New York was my first introduction to Edward Rutherfurd and I became an instant fan. Although his novels are mighty tomes, they never lag, and I always feel as though I received a wonderful lesson in history through the eyes of the characters.
Through interesting characters, paints a vivid picture of New York through the centuries.
