Former U.S. marshal Rip Lane makes a promise to a dying friend. He promises to deliver the man’s daughter safely to Rochester. When the daughter goes missing Rip is pushed to his limit. Russian sex traffickers try to stop him. An explosives expert tries to stop him. But nothing can stop Rip. He will keep his promise. At any cost.
Rip Lane, a retired US Marshall, visits his friend Blake in the hospital. Rip is in New York state to take Blake’s daughter Kelly to Rochester to help find an apartment before she starts nursing school. Kelly has been working as a stripper and is trying to turn her life around now that she’s pregnant. Unfortunately, the brakes on Rip’s RV go out near Rising Falls, and Kelly is kidnapped. Most of the book tells about Rip’s search for Kelly. He ends up calling in favors from many former colleagues. The way the author ends the plot is unique. Good reading.
Have read all four books in this series. Kept thinking they would get better. Nope.
The dialogue is clunky, the situations unrealistic and the author has a real thing for lists of facts and throwing in facts that have nothing to do with moving the story along. And, trying to make Rip come off as funny or sexy just didn’t work for me.
From the way Rip talks and acts, he in no way resembles the author’s description of him. I just don’t see the character and the description matching up.
You can depend on hearing how buff Rip is and how he works out and runs. And, how all the women want him (as if). But, he does manage to find someone to sleep with in the books. And, you will learn vast quantities of facts about the Marshalls’ Service.
good characters; excellent writing; was hard to put down; another late night reading.
Celeste R.

EXCELLANT read…..tough to set it down. never saw ending coming.
Interesting story. Well told. Glad there are others I can move on to!!!
Oh yes, i loved this story. As a matter of fact, i couldn’t put it down. I loved the dialog between character’s. Very interesting reading i delicately would recommend
Rip joins that group of 21st century heroes wandering around saving folks, killing bad guys and rescuing those in danger. He does carries more than a folding toothbrush in his RV and several friends know how to get in touch. On top of everything else he has some very interesting friends. Great reading and every story stands on its own.
Located in area where I live – made it more relatable
Far too predictable
Another great book in this series – great author
In “New York Strip” by W.J. Costello we meet Rip Lane, a retired U.S. Deputy Marshall who is visiting his friend Blake, a U.S. Deputy Marshall dying of cancer in a New York hospital. Rip has retired from the Marshall Service while he is still in his forties after working for them for twenty-five years. Blake asks him to help his daughter Kelly find an apartment near the University of Rochester which she plans to attend and become a nurse. Blake tells Rip that Kelly had previously worked as a stripper but now wants to turn her life around. Rip agrees to go with Kelly to Rochester. While on their way, Rip’s RV which now serves as his home, method of transportation and hauler for his motorcycle, ATV and bicycle, loses its brakes. Rip has to stop at the only garage in town and is surprised at how inept Earl, the mechanic, seems to be. After Earl gets a phone call, he tells Rip and Kelly that his lunch is ready at a nearby restaurant. He suggests that either Rip or Kelly pick up his lunch so he can continue to work on the RV’s brakes. Kelly goes so Rip can watch the mechanic but she does not return. Rip goes to look for her and cannot find her. He tries to call her on her phone but her voice mail picks up. Rip thinks back to how they got to the garage and remembers two things, one that he saw that Kelly’s wrist was bandaged and the other, that he had an encounter at a rest stop with two men in a white Cadillac that he realized must have been following Kelly and him from the hospital. Rip wonders if Kelly was depressed and just wanted to disappear or if she wanted to commit suicide or if the two men in the Cadillac could have taken her. He goes to the local sheriff’s office. He is told by Sheriff Cooper that he cannot do anything about a missing person case for twenty-four hours. He does take down Rip’s description of Kelly and copies a picture of her that Rip finds on Facebook. Rip tells him about the white Cadillac and the two men whom he encountered at the rest stop and how he believes these men might be connected to Kelly’s disappearance. He gives the sheriff the license plate of the Cadillac. Rip realizes that the sheriff will not help him and that he will have to find Kelly himself. The story is interesting up to this point, but now it gets even more interesting when one of the men from the Cadillac passes in front of the window of the Sheriff’s office and Rip runs out to confront him. He follows the man, catches up to him and the man denies ever meeting either Rip or Kelly. When Rip grabs the man, Sheriff Cooper, who has followed Rip, releases the man, believing the man that he never saw Rip before, and warns Rip about breaking the laws of his town. Rip returns to the garage and finds his RV still there, but no mechanic. He hears banging coming from the garage office. He opens the office door and finds Earl, the real mechanic, tied up. Earl was apparently tied up by the man who posed as the mechanic. Once his RV’s brakes are fixed, Rip goes on his way to find Kelly. Now readers will not be able to put the book down, just as I could not put it down. I highly recommend that readers follow this exciting though sometimes frustrating book to its unexpected end.
Kept my interest…entertaining
Well written with realistic characters and story that makes you want to keep on reading.
