Winner of the David J. Langum, Sr., Prize in American Historical Fiction Named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post and “Required Reading” by the New York Post Edward Rutherfurd celebrates America’s greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga, weaving together tales of families rich and poor, native-born and immigrant—a cast of fictional and true characters whose fates rise and … fictional and true characters whose fates rise and fall and rise again with the city’s fortunes. From this intimate perspective we see New York’s humble beginnings as a tiny Indian fishing village, the arrival of Dutch and British merchants, the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the convulsions of the Civil War, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the trials of World War II, the near demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the 1990s, and the attack on the World Trade Center. A stirring mix of battle, romance, family struggles, and personal triumphs, New York: The Novel gloriously captures the search for freedom and opportunity at the heart of our nation’s history.

Great read!
Excellent! Reading this book was so much more enjoyable than reading a boring history book. I learned quite a few facts and gained new insight into the development of the United States.
One of the most interesting books I have read
Great historical fact woven through generations of offspring seeking to establish roots, wealth and society. Rutherford can always be counted on to deliver a book you can’t put down.
Loved it! The author brings the melting pot of nyc to life with unforgettable characters and a story line that brings you from the destruction of native Americans’ life to the attack on the twin towers.
Revisited old History lessons and learned something new.
I didn’t think I would like this book, since I had little interest in the history of New York, but I was wrong. This book was certainly up to par with the other Rutherford books. Very entertaining and informative.
I loved the characters and the history of New York….
Really liked this book. It was very informative and helped cut through a lot of the misinformation that has been put out over the years by various sources (including the historical figures themselves).
I have read all Rutherfurd. books. They are long but wonderful, and I always hate to see them end. My favorite author.
Great historical fiction by an absorbing author.
Great historical novel.
nice blend of history with fiction; easy to get involved with the characters
Really great read to learn about the history of New York. Story of several families living in the area and how their lives were impacted by each other, as well as the growing of the New York area. I have read several of Rutherford’s books which deal with several families involvement in a city or country – London and Russka are my favorites and New …
Loved the book!
I love reading Rutherford. His writing is superb, interesting and educational while also being an interesting fun read.
The book is light on characterization, but helpfully informative from the standpoint of historical characters even before they become significant names in our history.
Fascinating historical fiction about the building of NYC. The characters were believable and represented the type of individuals who contributed to the development of the Big Apple. Story lines were interesting. Style of writing was entertaining and easy to read.
