First do no harm.Trevor Sanchez left behind a life of war with Alpha Team for a future in medicine. Pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor, Trevor doesn’t have much time for anything other than studying for the next exam in his accelerated medical school. When the Sons of Adam attack the teaching hospital he attends, Trevor can’t stand by and do nothing, especially not when someone’s life is in … someone’s life is in danger. When that life involves a gorgeous, funny paramedic, Trevor knows he’s in trouble.
Tread with care.
Paramedic Brendan Kane never thought rescuing a patient’s life would put his own at risk. Being targeted by a terrorist group was never covered in his medical training. When his security detail comes with a former member of Alpha Team, Brendan discovers a silver-lining to the situation. Trevor is hot like fire and oh so sexy, taking up space in Brendan’s life in unexpected ways that he’s reluctant to give up.
Never break an oath.
Trevor and Brendan must navigate their way through danger and a searing connection that leaves them both wanting more. If they hope to give the spark burning between them a chance to ignite, they’ll have to outlast the enemy first.
New Horizons takes place after In the Requiem in the Metahuman Files series.

Coming out from the shadows (an audio review)
Trevor Sanchez just wants to get through medical school. He’s a metahuman, sure, but he wants to help people in a way that doesn’t include violence. When violence comes to the door of the hospital where he’s studying, though, he has no choice but to step in. He uses his telekinetic powers to subdue the perpetrators, and finds himself coming face-to-face with a very brave paramedic who stepped into the line of fire while protecting his patient. There’s chemistry between the two men and one thing leads to another.
But life isn’t always as easy as might be hoped. There are more bad guys, more battles to be fought, and more metahumans to make cameos.
This is a great novella featuring a metahuman who isn’t front and center and I enjoyed that. A glimpse into a secondary character who really did deserve his own happy ending. With an interesting technique in the bedroom. Creative indeed.
Finally, a nod to Greg Boudreaux’s narration. As always, he did a great job.
Although this book says it’s book 2 in the Metahuman Files: Classified series it’s really book 5.5 in the Metahuman Files series, and should be read after In the Requiem.
I loved that Trevor got his own book with his own love interest. I was completely enthralled with this short little romance that had some of the kinkiest sex with telekinesis bondage. I had no idea I needed telekinesis bondage sex in my life, but here we are. I highly recommend this book.
I read this book for the second time as an audiobook that was narrated by Greg Boudreaux. The audiobook was well done and I loved Greg’s voice and how he performed all the characters.
Moving on with life after the devastating and life-altering events in DC isn’t always straightforward. Some suffer with PTSD, others struggle to find their new place in the world. Trevor Sanchez has always been sure of who he is and what he wants. While he misses the camaraderie and stability and familiarity of his military unit and his place with Alpha team, he’s eager to finally become the doctor he wants to be. When the Sons of Adam don’t seem to be laying down their plans, Trevor becomes embroiled in the local faction’s drama when they seek revenge on a handsome and frightened paramedic. Brendan puts patients above himself and once again, he’s staring down the barrel of a gun. When he and Trevor connect it’s far deeper than attraction or duty, it’s soul-changing. Understanding the fragility of life and unwilling to dismiss what they feel, they have to navigate their enemy and their duties if they hope to carve out a piece of the future for them together.
Seriously hot. Trevor is fantastic in his use of abilities as well as his innate sense of concern for others. While he knows where his past and his future goals will take him he’s completely unafraid of what he feels for Brendan and I loved that he was open and willing to accept all that meant. Brendan was more hesitant only because he’s caught somewhere between lust, being starstruck, swept off his feet, and afraid of the threats closing in on him. Their dynamic in the bedroom was incredible and Trevor’s direct attack with the feels while including Brendan in his life really made this story great. The only issue I had with this was the mental healing of Brendan that needed to be addressed. I seriously cannot get enough of this series and was extremely happy to get another novella to dive back into.
I am a relative late-comer to Hailey’s Metahumans series, mostly because I wasn’t sure of the genre. Urban fiction/paranormal isn’t really my thing. After hearing people raving about her stories for several months, however, I finally started reading In the Wreckage (Metahuman Files book 1) and found I could not stop. The benefit to dragging my feet was that I didn’t have to; I spent a glorious couple of weeks reading all 5 books, plus the short stories and ficlets she would occasionally grace us with. In short, I devoured the stories, and when Hailey moved on to writing a different series, I gleefully followed her. Her writing is excellent – tight editing, interesting plots, great world-building and strong, diverse characters. And seriously, wonderfully Hot!
Revisiting her Metahumans world with Trevor’s story was a gift, and much like visiting an old friend, I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed the Alpha Team until I was back with them. They all have roles in New Horizons, but this is Trevor’s story. In many ways, Trevor has always been my favorite character – understated, more focused on saving lives and doing no harm than blowing things up or shooting people. The team medic is in medical school now, and this novella starts on a typical day – packed with classes, driven by caffeine – that rapidly goes sideways. Brendan is a paramedic who finds himself in the midst of a firefight in the emergency room. He’s clearly Trevor’s perfect match, and it’s wonderful that the instant attraction is bolstered by feelings of respect and admiration on both sides. While I would have loved to have prolonged my visit with Alpha Team, this novella seems a perfect length to tell the story of Trevor, Brendan, and the latest Sons of Adam shenanigans. It can be read as a stand-alone, but it would be a shame to not enjoy the entire series, which includes a lot of fast-paced action and high drama (this novella is a little lighter in both elements, due to its length). I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy to review, and I honestly can say there’s nothing I didn’t enjoy.
Despite this being a short novella this book brought back all the things I love about Metahuman world and added another couple to the ever growing Alpha team family.
A chance meeting of Trevor and Brendan under dangerous circumstances finds two men in close quarters and falling in love very quickly. But even though it’s fast they manage to learn to trust each other and become friends and lovers. Who knew these two men would set the sheets on fire?! Who knew that Brendan is full of surprises and will be so prefect for Trevor!?
I enjoyed their interactions, the protectiveness that Trevor felt almost immediately for Brendan, how sweet he was to him. I liked Brendan’s loyalty to his patients and his ability to protect them despite danger to himself. I think that Brendan’s nurturing heart was a flawless counterpart to Trevor’s fearlessness, and given time their feelings will grow as strong as Jamie and Kyle’s. All of the Alpha team members made an appearance – they all have moved on with their lives and it was a treat to visit with them again. I loved all the teasing and ribbing Trevor got from them – they all care for each other and have each other’s back. There was enough steam, romance and fighting to make this an exciting read. I highly recommend it.
