It’s been one year since graduation, and Beatrice Hartley has mixed feelings about joining her friends a weekend reunion.
She’s right to be worried. After a night out, they narrowly avoid a collision with a car on a deserted road. Or so they believe.
Back at the mansion where they are staying, a mysterious man knocks on the door during a raging storm. He tells them that they must make a choice: one of them will live, and the rest will die. And the decision must be unanimous.
Soon time backbends. Beatrice and her friends are forced to repeat that dreadful day so many times they lose count. With each replay, events twist and fears come alive in horrifying ways.
This nightmare, this nothingness . . . this is the Neverworld Wake.
To escape, they have to vote. But how do you choose who to kill? And then how do you live with yourself?

This book is impossible to describe and nothing like I thought it would be. Because I don’t want to accidentally give any spoilers, all I’ll say is: read it. It is utterly haunting and unexpected and is one of those stay-up-all-night books that is totally relentless and uniquely captivating. It’s definitely one of my favorite reads this year!
I’ve never yet read a Pessl I didn’t like, even though they’re all very different! If you care about this sort of thing, Night Film is actually my fave.
This is totally different from that in tone and story. It qualifies as YA, but if that’s not your thing, don’t let the genre dissuade you. It’s a fast and rewarding read and it makes you think, which is a Pessl signature. This is sort of a Groundhog Day / Sliding Doors kind of mashup that makes its own rules.
I’ll just say this, once you pick up the book it has a hold on you until you reach the end. It is unlike anything I have ever read before. Completely unpredictable throughout the whole thing, and captivates you with the enchanting depth of each character. This book holds secrets and mysteries that grips you until the very end. Every page turned reveals a new plot twist that you will never see coming. I recommend this book if you are looking for an action packed thriller that you won’t be able to put down until you’ve finished it.
Neverworld Wake

A very slow start had me uninterested but the story became engaging about 1/3 through. The plot was unique and imaginative but some of the dots didn’t connect. The execution was lacking as most of it felt rushed, and the characters came to conclusions out of the blue with no lead up. The “secret” that was revealed at the end by the MC didn’t make much sense since the story is told in first person POV. A major question was left unanswered. It felt disjointed but had potential.

NEVERWORLD WAKE was one of the most mind-melting books I’ve read all year. The world building was spot-on, and the characters were richly created. The story went to a place I never thought it would and the ending left me with my mouth agape. If you’re looking for an original book with unpredictable twists and turns, be sure to pick up this one.
“Life does not belong to you. It is the apartment you rent.” – The Keeper
This is a story that follows Beatrice who lost the love of her life in a mysterious accident and a year later decides to reconnect with their friends to find answers. Only to unlock a multitude of secrets. 5 lives, a tragedy, a mysterious stranger, 1 survivor. Vote, vote, vote. I highly recommend this story; I could not put it down.
