Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young businessman living in London, with a dull job and a pretty but demanding fiancee. Then one night he stumbles across a girl bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help her – -and the life he knows vanishes like smoke.
Several hours later, the girl is gone too. And by the following morning Richard Mayhew has been erased from his world. His bank cards no longer … no longer work, taxi drivers won’t stop for him, his landlord rents his apartment out to strangers. He has become invisible, and inexplicably consigned to a London of shadows and darkness a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations. He has fallen through the cracks of reality and has landed somewhere different, somewhere that is Neverwhere.
For this is the home of Door, the mysterious girl whom Richard rescued in the London Above. A personage of great power and nobility in this murky, candlelit realm, she is on a mission to discover the cause of her family’s slaughter, and in doing so preserve this strange underworld kingdom from the malevolence that means to destroy it. And with nowhere else to turn, Richard Mayhew must now join the Lady Door’s entourage in their determined — and possibly fatal — quest.
For the dread journey ever-downward — through bizarre anachronisms and dangerous incongruities, and into dusty corners of stalled time — is Richard’s final hope, his last road back to a “real” world that is growing disturbingly less real by the minute.
If Tim Burton reimaginedThe Phantom of the Opera,if Jack Finney let his dark side take over, if you rolled the best work of Clive Barker, Peter Straub and Caleb Carr into one, you still would have something that fell far short of Neil Gaiman’sNeverwhere. It is a masterful debut novel of darkly hypnotic power, and one of the most absorbing reads to come along in years.

I read this some time ago, and it sticks with me as one of the best books I’ve ever read. Richard Mayhew is heartrendingly earnest and relatable. Just a good guy doing his best against intense odds. Read it. You won’t regret it.
A must read for fans of Neil Gaiman.
Excellent book.
When I finished I immediately reread the story. Loved it.
My favorite book!
this book has a great story, it’s very original. it is set in a world that runs parallel to ours. His books always seem like a dream, i love them!
This is, with doubts, the best novel I have ever read.
This is the story of Richard Mayhew who rescues a hurt young girl one night and ends up in the Underworld of London. He no longer exists in London above where he had a life, a fiance, and a good job. Now he is stuck in a world of forgotten people and places. He befriends the girl he rescues – Door, and travels with her as she tries to discover …
This is one of Mr. Gaiman’s best. Really enjoyed the story and characters
Neverwhere is a very strange story. It is weird sci-fi that is somewhat is connected. The main character has not developed enough to be sympathetic of his plight. Oh I like the concept the book did not hold my interest. Do not recommend spending your time on this one
Such a great reading! I really like Neil Gaiman’s kind of fantasy.
London businessman, Richard Mayhew, lives a normal, sort of boring life til 1 night he sees a young girl laying on the sidewalk. Her name is Door. She is hurt and looks homeless but he is the only one who tries to help her. After helping her, he loses his normal life but is …
If you like fantasy, this is an interesting read. What goes on under the city streets in the infrastructure of our pipes and tunnels? Very intriguing ideas!
Brilliant story of an average Englishman accidentally drawn into the previously unseeable world that exists in London Below. Highly recommended!
I loved this book, it transported me to a dark world not to far from reality. Get lost in it!
This was my first time reading a Neil Gaiman book. And I must say I wasn’t disappointed at all. This book is something else. The way Neil told this story and those songs they were creepy. This book gave me all kinds of feeling while listening. And even that ending was done beautifully.
I highly recommend this book. And I will now be reading …
I listened to this book and did not want to shut it off. The storyline was good for fantasy, but what made me give it 5 stars was the performance. I loved the voices and the variety of characters.
This is an older Gaiman book that somehow I missed. It is Gaiman strange through and through and true Gaiman weird! It’s unpredictable and thrilling. A great fun read! I highly recommend it!!
I’ve been recommending the first books in series that I love but I had to take time out to recommend this standalone because Neil Gaiman and a freaking awesome rendition of London and all the things! Richard Mayhew is kind of a doormat, living on the periphery of his own life, which is fine because when he helps a young woman called Door, his …
Love this – try it and let this author change your whole perspective, too!
I know! How can I have not read this book before?
This is an achievement of Dickensian proportions, successfully populating London Under with archetypal characters that deserve immortality.
I’m so glad I read it.
