Decades ago, a shotgun wedding locked Edith into a life with a husband she’s not sure she ever loved. Now, at a ‘certain age,’ she feels like a ghost in her own life, wondering where all this came from: the scornful husband, the mercenary brood of grandchildren, the well-meaning but controlling daughter-in-law. Then one Christmas morning Edith wakes to find her husband dead, and the role she … played for so long crumbling.
Soon questions arise about her husband’s death, and papers discovered in his pockets send Edith unraveling secrets of the man she thought she knew. Edith’s son Brian is the focus of her life, but he may not be as perfect as she thought. Revelations that he might be cheating shock her. As Edith investigates the mysteries of her family, she may just find who she truly is.

There is so very much that I can say about this book. When I first started to read it I thought what a morbid book. But something told me to continue reading it. And I am so glad that I did. The author wrote this book as if it was her life’s story. She went into depth with the secrets which families has and she kept it real. The characters were portrayed in such real life where the story felt real. Very good read.
Unexpectedly good. a story that builds. I loved waiting for the next layer.
A proofreader could’ve helped this book out a lot. I did like the story even at that.
Reflective! So few books make one think about their part in relationships
This book was very complicated until you figured out who the characters were. I would recommend it as it was not your everyday story.
It was an easy read but it was predictable. I still enjoyed the progress “mom”, went through as she rediscovered herself, understood her mistakes, and claimed her successes.
Great twists and turns, wonderful;y true characters, couldn’t put it down. This book tells of a haunting emotion we all feel at some time in our lives, the not knowing, the not wanting to know, but the ultimate need for the truth
Wish I could write this well.
I could not put this down after reading the very first page. The secrets of family members carries the story.
This story could possibly be a realistic play out in part for many women who married out of necessity and wound up on their own after the death of a spouse.. Entertaining read with great characters and interesting plots winding throughout the story.
Hard to read. Story didn’t flow well. Okay book.
Loved this book. It got a little hectic toward the end which is why I gave it a 4 rather than a 5.
Struggle of an everyday woman, dealing with an ordinary life of commitment to doing the right thing even if her heart resented the duty. Eventually she accepted that some of the bitterness was of her own attitude, but I felt she had maintained her dignity through the years by refusing to reward her husband’s rejection of his own son. Later she learned how to disconnect from the past and move on. There were no big surprises. The plot was easy to foresee. For an easy, evening read the book was entertaining and worth the time spent.
This book has unexpectedly awesome charecters.
A mystery of life, lies, secrets and anger. Difficult, emotional story that begins in hate and anger and ends with hope.
It made you think of enduring love and t he importance of total honesty with your loved ones!
I enjoyed this book partly because I found I could relate to the characters and the plot seems one that many could relate to–a story of aging and pondering our regrets but also the trials and benefits of middle age living.
This book seemed to hit a note for me. Started reading it because I could relate to the main character. I then continued to read as the character rebuild her life.
Very interesting g book I enjoyed every minute. Go for it!
It was hard too get into at first but as I continue to read it I didn’t want to stop because I wanted to see what twist was going to happen next.
The character development is great. I enjoyed the evolution of the characters and story. The emotions and critical thoughts of the main character really kept the story moving. A little more editing would help – words missing or wrong. More issues toward the end.
