Second chances are sweeter than ever in Charlotte Stein’s steamy Dark Obsession series–perfect for fans of Katy Evans–as a self-reliant college girl falls for a reformed bully who’s desperate to make up for lost time.
Letty Carmichael can’t believe her eyes when she catches a glimpse of her high school tormenter, wrestling champ Tate Sullivan, on campus. College was supposed to be her escape … to be her escape from Tate’s constant ridicule. Now he’s in her classes again, just waiting for his chance to make her life hell. But when Letty and Tate are partnered up for an assignment–on sex in cinema, of all things–she starts to see a kinder, gentler side of him. And when she realizes Tate knows more about sex than she could ever guess at, he soon starts making her blush in a whole new way.
Tate Sullivan is haunted by regret over his cruelty toward Letty. So when she agrees to work with him, he seizes his chance to make amends. He can’t blame her for not believing he’s for real, but soon Tate starts to break down her wall. She wants to know about passion, desire, lust–topics he is well versed in. And in return she offers the one thing he always wanted: the chance to be more than just a jock.
Letty is shocked by how sensitive Tate can be. Still, desiring him feels ludicrous. Loving him is impossible. Craving him is beyond all reason. So why can’t she stop?

I don’t know if I’m physically capable of not screeching like an excited owl every time this book is mentioned. Don’t say the words ‘Never Sweeter’ in front of me if you want to escape without thirty minutes of enthusiastic fangirling. Until I read this book, I didn’t think it was possible to have a favourite book. I was all, “Oh, God, how could anyone choose just one book?” But I didn’t know. I was blissfully unaware. I had never been SHAKEN to my CORE by a TRULY SOUL-REARRANGING book that seemed written for me alone. Reading this book was kind of like if someone wrote down all of your weird just-about-to-fall-asleep thoughts and weaved them into an unbelievably sexy and heartbreakingly vulnerable and surprisingly funny romance. I don’t know why anyone would do that, but they should, and I’m very glad that Charlotte Stein did. Can you tell that my grasp on reality and communication is slipping? That’s what this book does to me. I really don’t know why I thought I could review it.
Lush and raw and hypnotic. Stein is characteristically brilliant in this intense second chance, enemies-to-lovers romance that cantilevers eroticism and heartbreaking romance. Erotic romance at its very best. Delish.
Charlotte Stein is one of the best romance writers writing today, and Never Sweeter is proof of it. It’s enemies-to-lovers in the most emotional way, the hero bullied the heroine in high-school, and is now desperate to make amends. Of course, she trusts him not a bit, and I still can’t believe Charlotte somehow makes it all work perfectly.
When I read the premise of this book I was intrigued. I didn’t know it was book 2 in a series, it can totally be read alone. I just bought book 1 so I’m out of order now. But, I was completely curious about how Ms. Stein was going to make this love story work. Wow. It just blew me away. i went back and read the end 5 times just to feel all the feels again. Loved it.
As soon as I was done, I flipped back to the beginning and read it again!
This was so good. I highlighted so many passages. Tate is amazing for a jock. He has so much depth. I cried. Laughed and smiled so much reading this. The ending was a little odd but I still enjoyed it so much. This was my first book by this author. I asked a book group for a book where the hero groveled. This was golden.
I love body positive, but I wasn’t sure about the bully turned lover trope. It’s not my favorite, so I was hesitant when I picked up this book.
Charlotte Stein created an emotionally rich, incredibly nuanced love story that had me glued to my e-reader. I LOVED this story.
I don’t know how but what should have been a mess of completely unacceptable redeemed-bully angst left me in tears with my heart squeezing at the end. No idea what magic this is, I’m just grateful for it. Go read this!
I loved this book. I love wounded characters. Depth. Love. Romance. Charlotte Stein is an amazing writer.
I thought it was great….both characters had been through a lot but I like a guy who realizes he’s a jerk but that’s not him anymore or was he ever a jerk to begin with?
I am a rabid Charlotte Stein fan. She writes angsty sweet heroines and gets so deep into their heads. I’ve thought just like her heroines back when I was younger, unhappier, and all alone in the world. This kind of hero is what I think Stein does best –a Nice Hot Guy, and once you peel back his layers, he’s got these secret guilty sexual desires that the heroine has just **got** to unleash in him.
That said — you get all that Stein goodness in this book AND a twisted, perverse story framework to boot. #SoWrongSoRight It was a roller-coaster. For the first and only time in my romance reading so far, I forgot there was a guaranteed Happily Ever After. For the first time reading a romance EVER I was gasping out loud at certain points.
If you love Stein’s work, you have to read this book. If you haven’t read her before, you have to read this book. There is no one like her out there–and no one who does what she does as well as she does–not by a long shot.
The characters are written in such an unusually effective way–subtle, understated, sweet, and so much more romantic as a result. I have read so many books in this genre, but I felt this one was different; it really pulled me in and pulled me in to other books by the author, though this may be my favorite.
I’m a big fan of the redeemed bully trope, but I honestly didn’t know where this book was going at first. Tate’s actions in the past made him seem unredeemable. Well, I was pleasantly surprised and I couldn’t put it down, and when I finally finished, I wanted more. Highly recommended!
Ok… This is the dirtiest book I’ve read so far. Plot-wise I’d give it a 3/5, but it did have me interested from the very beginning, so I don’t think you’ll get bored. The sex scenes were SEXY. Lots of dirty talk, lots of detail. Don’t read this unless you are ok with some moisture in your pants. Because it will happen.
Spoilers:
The first thing they do is masturbate together when they hardly know each other, kind of out of the blue, at which I was like “woah, what?” And I almost put the book down just out of embarrassment, but I’m glad I kept going because everything after there was good.
I went back and read my original review of this book on Goodreads to verify what I thought I remembered. Yep, this was the book that turned me on to Stein’s work. In the review (from 2016) I grapple with her originality, which had put me off in the first book or two that I had picked up. Then this one. And it clicked. That’s really how it worked. Nothing changed. I just “got it.” So I highly recommend this as a book worth reading and rereading: it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever read and two years later it’s still stuck with me. Letty and Tate have a painful bond that makes their relationship complicated but utterly unique — and their struggle to trust each other is deeply moving. Tate is a great character off to a terrible terrible start, as he well knows (“you were always at your very best when I was at my worst,” he says to Letty, amazingly). And it’s also just *funny* in a way I now understand to be typical of Stein after many more books on auto-read and auto-buy. A gem!
Enjoyed this author very much. Enjoyed the story though it was hard to love the hero initially.
Loved this book. Would have liked to had more glimpses into their younger days. What a guy, he knew all a long.
Loved this book. Read it for free and then bought it. Great sex scenes
This book is HOT! The scenes are original and heartfelt. An nice easy read.
WOW!! What an emotional rollercoaster. This is a very well written original story, with amazing characters!! This is my first by C. Stein and I can’t wait to read more!!
