The author did an excellent job hiding Chase’s identity in the story.
Better Than I Expected
I was expecting a heroine who was unapologetic, brash, and tough as nails. Chase was that – to a degree. Femininity and vulnerability were also blended into her character, adding intrigue and appeal. Duncan was a multi-faceted character too, and there was good “sizzle” between him and Chase. The plot was smart with clever twists woven in with the romance. Well done.
The last book in the Rules of Scoundrels series. The reader knows right away that Chase is actually Lady Georgiana. The plot traces her history and how our hero uncovers the truth. I loved all the books in this series. I love how a lady of that time period was able to carve out the life that she wanted for herself (given access to money).
This is the 4th book in the series and it was the next in my opinion. I love Sarah Macleans steamy stories
What a great surprise ending to a four book series! Love, love, love this book.
This book was the fantastic ending that the Rule of Scoundrels deserved! After loving the first book and being rather disappointed in the second and third, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect. I felt like books two and three were the same story told a different way, and I was afraid of another repeat. But with the surprise ending of finding out that Chase was a woman, the “prostitute” Anna no less, I was really excited for her story.
Chase/Anna is not a prostitute or a man. She’s a fallen woman named Georgiana, who was taken advantage of at 16 and got pregnant. She’s now the mysterious Chase, the first and original owner of The Fallen Angel. How Ms. MacLean was able to hide the fact that Chase was a woman when she appeared as Chase in scenes in the other books, is remarkable! If I cared to, I’d go back to all those scenes and try to find any context that alluded to the fact. The was thoroughly and plesantly surprised! I wish every book could surprise me that much!
Georgiana was paired with Duncan West, the wealthy, self made newspaper man who appeared in the other books a few times. I really liked him in the few times he popped up in the other books, and I’d had the thought that I hoped she’d give him his own book (thinking that Chase was a man so it couldn’t be in the fourth book). So I was super happy when I found out he was the hero of this book!
My only complaint about the story is how long it took Georgiana to tell Duncan that she was Chase. Even then, she didn’t intend to tell him. Her three partners set her up so she had no choice but to tell him. I wanted her to tell him way earlier than it happened as well. It was fine the way it worked out, but I still would have preferred it to have been a bit different.
I really enjoyed all the scenes with Georgiana’s daughter, Caroline. She was was beyond her 9 years, but needed to be based on how she was being raised and the situation she’d been dealt by being a “bastard.”
A silly thing that disappointed me was that both hero and heroine were blondes. I don’t know why, but it bugged me. After both heroines of books one and two being blondes, and the heroine of book three being a near red head, I would have preferred Georgiana to be brunette. Like I said, silly preference, but it was odd that they had the same blonde hair.
I don’t want to give away anything or rehash any more of this book, cause this one deserves to be read without it being tainted by any other opinions! It was a great finale to the series. I sure hope Ms. MacLean writes a book for a grown up Caroline one day!
