We begin with Bridget’s freshman year. College… What would be taught in a college with a mixed student body of Human and Fae? More importantly, how would everyone get along? How does one maneuver through the ins and outs of the fae septs, bondmates, laws of civility and debts of honor amongst these humans who have absolutely no clue? Bridget, for whatever reason, is a stickler about all of this Fae stuff. She hugs trees, touches flowers and talks to plants and welcome mats. She also needs to find a new roommate.
I knew that Bridget, the main character, was black; but it really didn’t hit me until I was holding the book in my hands. I liked having a main character who wasn’t white and I wondered if the book would encompass racial issues. I was pleased to discover that it did…it just wasn’t in the way I expected. And that, my fellow readers, is a major plus.
This small part of the world where both Fae and Human are residing side by side is a fragile balancing act where one misstep could very well spell disaster for both worlds. Bridget is truly a kickassery female who finds herself right in the mix of it all. She watches out for herself but also for others IF she also benefits. Byrd Nash has effortlessly woven these two worlds together without dropping a stitch; leaving a beautifully intricate tapestry with the turning of each and every page. This is a fast paced story that will keep you captivated. Three more years to go. Relax! Book years not human years…
Parental Note: If this story is a sample of what is to come in the rest of the series, I can fully recommend this College Fae Magic series for tweens 12 and up. In fact, I’m sure my soon to be 13 year old granddaughter would love this series. I did!
Never Date a Siren (College Fae Book 1)
By Byrd Nash
5 out of 5 stars
The story Never Date a Siren (College Fae Book 1) by Byrd Nash is a fantasy book that I loved reading. It tells the tale of Logan Dannon and Brigit. Logan is a college student who finds out the hard way about the mythical creatures that attend the same college as he does. He finds himself having to navigate the fae’s code of honor to survive. Brigit is a fae. She finds herself with Logan, a human roommate in which she has been placed under a fairy debt. She finds herself helping to undo another fae’s love spell. Will she be successful? Will Logan be able to pass the semester? What does the future hold for Logan and Brigit? Read this book to find out. The author does an amazing job in world building. You are fully immersed in the world of the fae and how they interact with other mythical creatures as well as humans. This is a book that once I started couldn’t put down until I had finished the final page. I found myself rooting for Brigit and Logan to be successful. This is a story that I would recommend reading.
Fun read. This is cozy fantasy and just the right length for it. Has enough intrigue to keep you reading, good characters, nice pace. Reminded me a little of Dragons of Wendal. Even though the setting is college, it’s not really YA–no angst, not much of the typical YA tropes. I enjoyed it–great beach read (or these days quarantine distraction!)
Funny, lighthearted with serious consequences. I loved the characters and the world created here. However I think the recommended reader age should be raised just a tad.
I enjoyed and recommend this book to those who like fantasy like I do. Once I understood right and wrong aren’t the same to a Fae as the concept is to a human I settled in to the story and enjoyed it.
This is the first in a series by Byrd Nash and I believe it will attract a lot of readers. I need the escape into fantasy by the events of 2020 starting with the pandemic and then the refusal of mayors and governors (who all are in the same political party) to curb looting, rioting, arson, destruction of private and personal property, the wholesale attack on American values and traditions of the past two months that I want to go where some order is still in place even if it’s only in a book!
It will be a interesting series where human and Fae interact and both do their best to try and understand each other.
If that sounds like something you would like as well then join me and we’ll have a good time exploring this brave new world together. I’m sure Byrd will have some fun and surprising things to make this journey memorable for us!
“Never Date a Siren” weaves an exceptional plot, descriptive scenery, and a complex storyline that will intrigue readers. We meet Brigit, a highly honorable, ethical face who is a student at LOTTUS. She come into an honor debt to a human Bard, Logan, through his civility. The plot weaves a narrative those weak in Celtic Mythology may find a bit difficult to follow. However; the storyline is unique, has twists, and is adept at holding the attention of the reader. Throughout the storyline, it becomes apparent that Byrd, the author, truly enjoys weaving detailed, highly descriptive scenery. While a few of the highly descriptive sceneries were necessary, I found, at times the descriptions were intrusive and distracting from the main plot. I believe that if the author had spent a bit more time describing the Celtic background and character development, as opposed to the scenery, the story would have been more entertaining. Overall, a good read, primarily due to the uniqueness of the plot.
Addendum
The author has added a glossary at the end of the book.
This book was a great start to a series. I loved how Nash weaved in different fae folklore together. The interactions between the different types of fae was very clever and unique. I haven’t ready too many fae stories, but I found this to be quite original.
Poor poor human Logan got caught up in a Siren’s magic. The description of what it would be like to hear her call, be stuck in her clutches, and have to figure out a way around it was really cool. I can’t wait to read more about these characters.
Brigit was a really cool main character. She is very smart, follows the codes of the fae, but is able to do it in a way to get what she wanted. If you want an awesome female character, this is your book!
This is my first book by this author and I will be looking for more. This is a Young Adult paranormal story where fae and humans live side by side. It is a story that I was pulled in right from the first page. It is a well written with characters that are connectable and made me feel part of the story. Bridget is a head strong fae and than you have Logan who is human but has magical abilities he is just discovering. What will happen when they become roommates and Logan is in need of being saved from a spell. I highly recommend to find out what happens next by reading this book.
This is the first in a new series by Byrd Nash, and having thoroughly enjoyed the last book I read by her, I was really looking forward to reading this one. She has such a lovely way with world building and characterisations, it makes it so easy and enjoyable to read. I love the idea of the Laws of Civility and the strict rules that Brigit lives her life by. I also really liked the cat and Paul – who could do with a series of his own. I look forward to reading whatever the author publishes next.
I received a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via the author.
This book was fun!
Such a fun read! I couldn’t put it down and kinda wish I went to a Fae college! I really enjoyed this one!
What a fun read filled with the most wonderful cast of characters! Love, friendship, loyalty and magic…couldn’t put it down.
I could not put this book down. I longed for the 2nd book immediately.
I really enjoyed D.R. Perry’s Providence Paranormal College series. I did not expect to find another similar series as fun and as relatable. This author proved me wrong! This is such a great college experience – I wish I could have had this!
I really like reading about human and magical creatures stuck into real-life college situations. Most of the magical academies out there really do not prepare the students for real life – I am looking at you, Hogwarts! So far, I know only one successful series that could pull of this college theme besides this one. I am glad, really glad I have found this author.
A fun magical story with characters that are hard not to love.
Well now this was different and fun. A story for those who love magical beings living among humans and the things that could go wrong. Boy can I assure you things go wrong, and how could they not with college-aged students who are still too young to understand how the world works. I suggest reading Granny Starseed from Wicked Wolves of Windsor first as one of the main characters is Logan.
The imaginative first installment in the College Fae YA/New Adult series, introducing main characters Brigit and Logan who face typical issues for college students but with magical twists.
At Leopold Otto University, dryad Brigit meets American student Logan and the two strike up a cautious friendship. Can Logan free himself from a love spell and understand the culture of the Fae?
The way the author approaches Logan’s dilemma is clever and engaging. Highly recommended for readers who like fairy tales combined with humor in a contemporary setting.
A Fun, Magical Story
A fun, magical story — plus wonderful spinoff from Granny Starseed — that will leave readers hooked from the start. Trust me, once you fall into this world of faes and gods and humans, you will be sad to see it end and be left wondering how the characters don’t exist. I will definitely be waiting for the sequel. I must know what university life brings next for Brigit and Logan and their friends.
