Eva Devon is one of those authors who can do it all. The HEA at the end of an emotionally and dramatically tormented path is a given, but the witty banter, subtle world-building, family dynamics, and occasional observations on cultural history are all icing on a lusciously written cupcake of a tale. (Yes, that British stiff-upper-lip mentality did make protracted armed conflict easier to prosecute, didn’t it?)
Lockhart (what a name for this hero!) and Calliope (well, of course) are an opposites attract premise on the surface, but they are both solving the same problem–a bruised heart, an emotionally chaotic past–with different approaches. He’s all for rules, order, and structure. She’s a free spirit who never shies away from adventure. They are both courageous, though, and thus they find their way to an HEA. Wonderful read–perfect for a holiday treat!
Calliope Duke and her twin sister, Cleo, have inherited their mother’s ship the Wasp. They go to London to ask their brothers who own a shipping company to get their protection to ship under the same shipping banner. Calliope encounters Captain Lockhart “Lock” Eversleigh a duty, no nonsense Englishman at her brothers shipping office to find he’s her brothers’ brother-in-law. There’s an instant attraction between these two adversaries who are completely opposite of each other Calliope is a free spirit with no order in her life and Locke is all about order. Their attraction grows along with their witty banter, but the past have a hold of their lives. Can they overcome the past and learn to trust in love? An excellent story and one I voluntarily wrote a review.
Captain Caliope Duke and her sister are partners in the ship their mother left them. They know the best way to protect it and themselves is to sail under the same shipping banner as their half brothers. That means Caliope must spend a little time in England a place she hates. Her brothers work out of an office in London, so there she must go.
Captain Lockhart Eversleigh joined the army because he needs to always stay in control. Fighting helps with that.
He’s the youngest of a big happy family but they have had a big tragedy in the past that he is struggling with.
Family and relationship us a big factor in this story. The characters are a lot of fun, including the secondary ones that you know might have met in previous books. The heroine is a strong, intelligent and adventurous young woman. Our hero is set in his ways, but very loving to his family.
Great fun.
Never a Duke by Eva Devon
The Duke’s Club Series Book Eleven
Captain Lockhart “Lock” Eversleigh was in control of his life. Unlike his carefree family. So when the sister of his American brothers-in-law shows up, he has all he can do to hold onto his rigidity. She’s so different from any woman he ever met…but she’s American. And not one for rules.
Calliope Duke and her twin sister, Cleo, have inherited their mother’s ship. The Wasp. So they have to do something she never wanted to do. Set foot on England. But it was a necessary evil as they needed their half-brothers’ help…and for some reason, they opened a Duke office in London.
Two people completely opposite of each other… No matter how they fight the attraction, they are doomed to be pulled together. For a time, at least. Great story and characters. Eva Devon does a great job of pulling previous characters into the story, which I always enjoy.
