Book 1 of The Chaos Chronicles, by the Nebula–nominated author of Eternity’s End — with a new Afterword by the author.
looking forward to reading more my this author
This book was a little slow to start but once you figured out what was happening it was very good and a page turner and very unpredictable. It is one of the few first novels in a series that I have bought more. Looking forward to book 2 and 3.
Very good sci fi and I loved the humor!
This is how I always feel first contact will be.
A good time reading
Reading Carver is like being inside the heads of astro-scientists as they do quantum analyses and projections on outer and inner space while dream tripping on LSD. Needless to say, once again I’m hooked. Bandicut (our hero) is a bored space surveyor working for the man. He’s suffered a brain implant injury that’s left him open to reality detachment fugues and influence by an alien presence. And off we go to save the world…
Though it did take a few pages to get used to the unique punctuation for alien character-speak, I enjoyed the journey. I have two more books in this series on my bookshelf awaiting my reading.
A good read
A great sci-fi opera-type novel. The discovery and unexpected connection between the main human character and the aliens was very interesting. Fast-paced with outer space danger and tech speak. Looking for book 2!
Enjoyed this book. The characters were original from the same old stories.
This book was twisted. I really could not sink my teeth into all the twists and turns in the story. The protagonist, John Bandicut, seems to be a decent character. You get at the beginning that the story will be hard on him, and this is somewhat borne out. Over the course of the story, you see his development as he recovers from what is basically an addiction.
Overall, if you like complicated storylines, and don’t mind the story not actually ending, this might be a book for you.
John Bandicot is possessed. But not the way you’d think. Our author details the beginning of this story so well you can believe it exist. Strange thing happen to John while out on a survey run and those things lead to interesting situations as he is led to gather information and ultimately saving the Earth. He does? right? This is the first book detailing the adventures of an unlikely hero.
I wonder what is in store for him. Youth may enjoy this, sex is implied, not described in lurid detail. Violence is not detailed either, but there are close encounters of deadly activity.
Y’all enjoy, I did.
I haven’t read any science fiction in many years. Thought I would try it and couldn’t put it down at all. The whole series is fantastic now waiting for the next one. Love all of them. Always keeping you waiting for the next thing to happen.
Great story line
Wish it had ended differently, leaves you really hanging. I understand there is a Series of this story, but still…
Loved the story
Very interesting worldview with an excellent protagonist. Enjoyable story which should be read before any other in the series since it explains the How. Enjoyable read but it does have bits of pathos to enjoy.
This was a very good story idea, but too many things kept breaking the spell for me. The punctuation establishing the communications with the alien was a little clunky, but worked well enough, and in fact the way conscious and unconscious ideas flowed between the two main characters was pretty cool. The inconsistent use of made-up cuss words that did not manage to convey their meanings very well, alternating with “Christ!” or other familiar religious ones, did not make much sense in this fairly distant future setting. Repeated use of the word “coruscating”, an ugly word whose sound is so far from its sense, was annoying. It kept my attention to the end, but ultimately I don’t care enough to go on with this series.
