He wanted to right his family’s wrongs—but this damsel in distress has little reason to trust high society types and no interest in joining them… that had been stolen from her through the years. But Freddie isn’t comfortable with the trappings of money—or the attentions of a handsome stranger from London…
But can a man make a lady?
After the war, Lord Gideon Haverston resolved to never again burden himself with the troubles of others. Still, he was expecting to be greeted as a hero by the beautiful, if eccentric, young woman his stepmother cheated out of house and home, not suspected as a conspirator. Indeed, the situation is more complicated than Gideon had expected—and the task of taming Winnefred Blythe much more alluring…

Very good book
Thanks
First: I don’t give 5 stars easily but this one came very close. Strong female lead character and believable plot without touching on the maudlin made this story shine. For once the main hero is a flawed, both physically and emotionally, and still manages to bring the reader to a realistic crisis and a satisfying conclusion. This was a refreshing read from the very beginning.
This book was a lovely find, a second chance in life given to two women whom life has spared nothing.
It was essentially Winnefred Blythe’s journey to her HEA, a rather bumpy road.
Freddie never wanted to leave her dear small countryside in Scotland, but to please her only friend, she is willing. She is like that, always thinking to the others before herself.
Most of her life she has been a burden, a charge passed from one to another, until she was forgotten, so when Lord Gideon Haverston décides it is time his family rights the wrong they did to her, she refuses to become his charge. She will agree to be his friend or more but not an expense. It was funny to watch Freddie struggles with the rules and etiquette, openly sharing her difficulties and her lack of understanding of what is done or not but also it was nice to see that nothing could crush her spirit.
Well, except Gideon’s rebuff.
Gideon suffers from a heavy guilt, he is alive and not his men, why he keeps people at arm’s length. By doing this, he harms Winnefred, he tries to stay clear and far from her but he is also drawn to her. So he hurts her to ward her off.
He plays a game of cat and mouse so when it blew off his face, he does not know how to react properly.
I would have loved more groveling, Freddie was the persistant one, having faith in their story, she went after what she wanted when Gideon played hot and cold with her.
But in all, it was a great story of healing for them both.
I am not easily entertained, so when I laughed aloud many times, even I was surprised. A very enjoyable and engrossing book.
Read one and had to find another by this author. Her writing flows. Not sure the details are always historically accurate but the stories keep me coming back.
Enjoyed the characters
Boring
It had a decent story but i felt like it didnt get deep enough into the characters to really make a connection.
I loved the strength of these two wonderful ladies and was happy to see the story evolve as it did.
I loved how funny these characters’ dialogue was.
I really liked this book!!
A lovely regency piece that isn’t full off fluffy nonsense. Very unique and real characters in a real time. Enjoyed every page.
An easy read but charming. I liked the feisty heroine. She is not your typical regency lady. A good story to enjoy with a cup of tea beside a fire.
I would have given this 4 stars, except for Gideon’s angst due to PTSD. The heroine is strong throughout the book. The dialogue flowed well and I love when there is a Prologue and Epilog!
Excellent love story, full of romantic tension!
Be prepared to laugh out loud. This is a wonderful story. The characters actually seem real and communicate. Recommend to everyone.
N0t very believable
I enjoyed it so much I bought the rest of the series.
Better and more interesting than many of this genre. I enjoyed the characters and their exploits.
