He wanted to right his family’s wrongs—but this damsel in distress has little reason to trust high society types and no interest in joining them… that had been stolen from her through the years. But Freddie isn’t comfortable with the trappings of money—or the attentions of a handsome stranger from London…
But can a man make a lady?
After the war, Lord Gideon Haverston resolved to never again burden himself with the troubles of others. Still, he was expecting to be greeted as a hero by the beautiful, if eccentric, young woman his stepmother cheated out of house and home, not suspected as a conspirator. Indeed, the situation is more complicated than Gideon had expected—and the task of taming Winnefred Blythe much more alluring…

A compelling story of strength and resilience. A broken warrior tries to repair a problem caused by his step mother and finds love. Very good characters, well defined. Off now to read the second book of the series. I can’t wait.
Gideon and Freddie are an awesome pair, I absolutely loved their romance. I haven’t encountered characters as endearing as these in a while, and I actually wasn’t ready to let them go at the end. They’re both so unique and well-developed, that I wanted to spend even more time with them.
I was not as big a fan of the secondary romance with the other couple happening at the same time – I would have preferred that be set up in this book and given enough time and focus to really know or care about them in another book instead.
Lord Gideon Haverston is a smart, thoughtful, honorable hero and Winnefred Blythe is a resourceful down-to-earth heroine. Their banter is delightful. Lord Gideon has hidden depths, as he holds himself responsible for the deaths of boys under his command during the war, keeping him from wanting to be responsible for another individual in the future. He works hard to right a family wrong, of which he was unaware until he took over the family’s finances; introducing Winnefred to London society seemed like the right thing to do, but the intent for her to find a husband would mean she wouldn’t be in his company anymore…I really enjoyed the book.
Loved the characters and the original plot
good story for this genre
Delightful!
Great storyline.
Strong women characters. Author shows that love can overcome demons.
Nearly a Lady ( Haverston Family #1) by Alissa Johnson is a delightful read. The book has complex, flawed believable characters, a good plot that is easily read and understood with laugh out loud humor. It is a well written thoroughly enjoyable light romance.
It lacked something. The characters are unique. The setting and plot also unique but I can’t help but feel it lacks something. Pacing, probably, is the answer it didn’t drag but it didn’t flow either. The believability is also stretched. How two women make it work on a farm and just the sheer jumble of aspects that come together in the world makes for a unique but slightly bonkers story.
I loved Winnefred and Gideon. Several laugh-out-loud moments! The feather fan;-)
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I am a fan. Totally believable and entertaining.
This is a great story. I would have preferred that it did not have the “love” scene but it was still a good read.
I liked the leading characters humble personally. This book had a different theme line than the usual rich privileged leading lady.
Gideon and Winnefred prove to a perfect match. I liked the give and take of their characters and their situation.
A Mutually Assured Rescue
Miss Winnefred Blythe has been someones burden, she’s been abandoned, and not it would seem Lord Gideon Haverston has come to rescue her. Interesting. She is happy were she is and does not need to be rescued. However, for Lily’s sake she will try and be pleasant. The key word being “try”— which does not mean succeed.
What happens between Winnefred and Gideon is the stuff that well-written Regency romance novels are made of. Which is probably why I really loved it. Nearly a Lady by Alissa Johnson has it all; an honest and strong heroine, a brooding and tortured hero, smile-worthy dialogue; swoon-worthy passion and a very satisfying happy ending.
Content alert: The period appropriate “swearing” is kept to a minimum, with only passionate kissing and one moderately descriptive intimate bedroom scene.
Disclosure: I also posted my review with Amazon (as Rural Reader) and Good Reads.
Couldn’t put it down…..Loved this book!!
This author is a new favorite. Her characters are delightful, and realistic. There is minimal use of the overused tropes of abductions and attempted rape. Instead, she creates personalities and backstories that need to be worked through, with an overall “feel” of kindness and maturity in all her main characters. They don’t just jump to conclusions and refuse to talk, and thank goodness for that.
The writing is well-crafted, and the dialogue clear, consistent, and often witty. Fun to read!.
I liked that the author didn’t try to turn her characters into cookie cutter ton people. They were unique.
Loved the story and the way it was told.
Interesting characters. Not the ordinary heroine in this genre
