NATIVE GOLD: Book 1
Mathilda Hardwicke, a rebellious artist rejected by her family and New York society, heads west to Gold Rush California to make a new life for herself as a mail-order bride. When fate leaves her at the altar in Paradise Bar–a ramshackle gold camp full of ragtag miners–she’s sure she’s leaped out of the frying pan and into the fire.
But unbeknownst to Mattie, she has a protector. Sakote, a fierce Konkow warrior, is bound by honor to watch over the white woman. And though his tribe is threatened by the encroaching miners, he’s strangely drawn to Mattie, who delights in making pictures of him and whose destiny seems entwined with his.
When a tragedy at the camp forces Sakote to steal Mattie away, she finds herself in an unfamiliar Paradise of savage wonder, and she soon discovers a forbidden love more precious than gold.

This wonderful historical romance is set in Paradise, California, adding a timely poignancy to the story. I loved it!
Very good novel. Worth your time.
Loved this book. The voice of the Native American was fabulous. This story kept me totally interested. Unique. Sweet and a little steamy. Great read.
I loved reading this whole series. You learn some of the way Indians were treated in the old west.
Loved it very like one of my favorite authors Cassie Edwards whose collection I keep in plastic under the bed contai ers
Did not expect the story line. Original, and it was entertaining and enjoyable to read. Have not gotten the second book yet, but plan to. Liked the characters and had both funny and sad bits to the story – I would recommend it.
I haven’t read a book by her that I haven’t really liked, or loved. Highly recommend anything by her
This book was my second read by Glynnis Campbell, I have read some time ago a novella Reivers sets in medieval era, I loved it but I didn’t tried to read more from this author.
Why?
I do not really know, maybe as a non English people, I already sometime struggle to comprehend all the complicated and unknown words and terms that are not always translated as from the past so less used. Why I often stay in Regency and around this era historical stories.
But the blurb totally won me, and I can only say it was a wonderful read, which really needs time to fully appreciate it. First it is an unknown word to me, from the gold diggers to the American natives. The main characters are so lovable, each in its own way. And the additional ones are a sweet bunch of men, all so kind to the lost bride-to-be-not-really-a-widow.
Glynnis Campbell did an amazing job by introducing the characters and their different worlds, as for how they will interact when they will collide against the unknown is the other.
Mattie is so very courageous, I’m amazed by all the risks she took to try to make her dreams come true, she left everything to travel to an obscure place, to meet a stranger leaving all she has always known behind. And when her hopes are crushed, she doesn’t give up and rolled up her sleeves, making ends meet with her unique talent.
Sakote is a forerunner, he feels his world is changing and not in the good way, their time is counted but will the Kowtow accept to evolve and will he follow them when he dreams of his other half who is not from his world.
Nothing is their encounter was rushed, they slowly, step after step learn to hear, understand and trust another but it is a long way and not without many dents and harsh time.
By the way, I saw how they come from two very different planets, I loved my incursion in the Kowtow’s way of life and to see that all the white men were not monsters just men trying to survive in an hostile stranger country.
I adored the ragtag bunch of men the Paradise Bar miners were, they make mistake but stand together to protect their unsuspected ray of sunshine.
It was a wondrous story of two people, who despite they tried to fit will discover that home is not always what you thought.
“As far as Mattie was concerned, home wasn’t a place. It was wherever Sakote and her children were.”
Loved not just the primary characters, but those on the periphery. People to admire and people to laugh at. Of course, there are those you want to meet a painful end. The description of landscape is artful and the dialogue feels right. My only beef is with the cover. If we are going to embrace and enjoy and fall for this strong, lovable indigenous man, the model should look like one.
Great read.
This is a well told story about a young lady high society misfit coping with primitive living in a gold rush camp and encountering Native American culture. It is amusing, yet it involves eye opening survival experiences, and cultural prejudices to meet and overcome.
Great story !
4.5 stars. I was excited this book had a Native American hero. The story required a bit more suspension of disbelief than some romances, and a few of Sakote’s euphemisms were just…humorous :). But it was a fun read and very charmingly written. I really liked the ending! I look forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy, hopefully soon.
Oh man, what a romantic read!! Sakote is swoon-worthy and Mattie is a strong young woman that is a delight. I seriously recommend this book to anyone who loves an unforgettable romance!
I absolutely loved this book the plot of the story took me back to a time where life wasn’t easy for interracial relationships weren’t allowed .. but love and determination never stopped it! Awesome book a must read
This was a nice quick read. Love conquers all including race, beliefs and any other obstacles.
When Mattie Hardwicke’s imaginative artwork gets her in trouble with her uncle once again, she makes an impulsive decision. Answering the advertisement to become a gold miner’s bride lands her in even more hot water. When she arrives in California only to find her intended recently deceased, she must figure out how on earth she’s to make her way in this rough and tumble mining community on her own. And then she encounters the harsh but beautiful warrior Sakote…
This sweet, richly detailed love story kept me grinning throughout the whole story!
Sometimes against all odds 2 people from very different walks of life form a friendship and much stronger bond for life.
I really enjoyed reading this Book. To read about the Native Americans from the past & in CA really touched me.
Mattie Hardwicke & Sakote”s Journey to HEA came with a difficult problems, Hate, prejudice from the Native Americans because of the Children. It was a bit Melancholy at times, but very well written.
This book is okay but I did not finish, it’s not original. I knew the ending without completely reading the book.
