From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the first novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy—which also includes The Bone Tree and the upcoming Mississippi Blood—an epic trilogy that interweaves crimes, lies, and secrets past and present in a mesmerizing thriller featuring Southern lawyer and former prosecutor Penn Cage. Raised in the southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn … splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering the African American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Once a crusading prosecutor, Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses even to speak in his own defense.
Penn’s quest for the truth sends him deep into his father’s past, where a sexually charged secret lies. More chilling, this long-buried sin is only one thread in a conspiracy of greed and murder involving the vicious Double Eagles, an offshoot of the KKK controlled by some of the most powerful men in the state. Aided by a dedicated reporter privy to Natchez’s oldest secrets and by his fiancée, Caitlin Masters, Penn uncovers a trail of corruption and brutality that places his family squarely in the Double Eagles’ crosshairs.
With every step costing blood and faith, Penn is forced to confront the most wrenching dilemma of his life: Does a man of honor choose his father or the truth?

The book had a lot of information on the Jim Crow era in the South. I was intrigued by the story line, but disappointed that many of the threads of the story were left incomplete at the end of the story. I sure these story lines may be completed in the next book of the trilogy, but I prefer a book that is complete in itself. For example, we are not even sure if two of the characters are alive at the end of this book.
I definitely could not put down
Loved the book. Very interesting to come to know the characters. I want to read the other 2 books in the trilogy.
Everything! I absolutely love this series.
Good storyline but it got beat to death. About a third too long otherwise would have been a good read
Greg Isles never disappoints! After you stay up all night with Natchez Burning, you’ll rush to get the other two sequels! Isles brings some of the most deplorable characters against his protagonist, as you continuously ask yourself, “What would I do if I were in this situation?”
Absolutely brilliant read from the very first page! Grabs you and does not let go!!!
I liked this book. It was a fast reading, action packed book that was just fun to read. When I wasn’t reading it, I would be thinking what comes next?
Al of the books in this series are top notch. I highly recommend.
The whole series was awesome. Was sorry to come to the last book!
Penn Cage’s world is a delight to share in. Having said that, this book and the 2 sequels are much darker than Iles’ other Penn Cage novels.
Truly fine.
Set in one weekend and read the whole trilogy, best books I’ve ever read! I couldn’t stop, fast paced, page turning, engrossing! Greg Iles is a genius!
Like all of Greg Isles books it is a not put-downable read. it is the type of book that you think you’ll read a few pages before you go to sleep and find yourself at 3:am still very engaged. Bless e-readers for allowing me to carry his books with me all day so i can find a quiet moment and pick up where i left off. My staff know that if my door is closed around lunch time i’m reading and not to be disturbed unless the sky is falling.
Clear your calendar. Once you start you are committed to the end of the trilogy.
A little too action packed.
I love this author and this book delivers his most excellent style. I have read everything this author has written and he never disappoints.
all in all a good book. i will read the trilogy. a little long but still good.
I enjoyed it so much that I read the entire series.
Kept me totally engaged
