A great read, would not be surprised if this series is one day as iconic as Lord of the Rings.
The book is well done. The teaser for the second book is also interesting and can’t wait for it to come out.
Took me a little while to really get into the book and story, but once I did I was hooked. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
It’s nice to see a new author with complex interesting characters who live in a world that has nuance and shades of grey. A refreshing break from too many works where everything is either perfectly good, or perfectly evil.
I bought this book on a whim waiting for the new Sanderson novel to come out. This us a great start for an up and coming author. Can’t wait for the second book hope i don’t for to long.
Great book with clear, coherent writing. I am really looking forward to book two. Its always tough to judge a new writer but this book met and exceeded all my expectations. Well written, well, edited, great world building and establishment of a magical system.
I enjoyed this first book in the series. It has magic, combat, sword fighting and even dragons. If you enjoy fantasy you should give it a try.
I came across this book and got it on a whim. MAN OH MAN was it good! I love how he obsessively focuses on keeping the characters deep and avoiding common character tropes. A really interesting world full of interesting characters. Would definitely recommend.
I am an advit reader. Rarely, do I find myself totally captured and unable to put a book down. This was one of the rare ones. The charactors personalities drew me forward into the story line. Each charactor had his/her own strength, while supporting the main charactors. This is a must read. Prepare to be enchanted.
A very good fantasy world has been created with great lore. They themselves are trying to figure out their lost history. Great characters and story line. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Thoroughly enjoyable epic. It’s many twists and fast paced action, delivered an edge your seat ride. The authors martial art experience clearly assisted but didn’t detract. Looking forward to the next stanza.
What a wonderful, magical fantasy land within which to escape… My kids couldn’t put it down and I was stunned that I could be lured again into reading fantasy that rivaled Lord of the Rings… I highly recommend it. As a martial artist I really appreciated the fight scenes, the action left me with the impression that I was reading about actual fighting that was occurring as I read it… If you have ever enjoyed a fantasy novel this is one to pick up.
There is an intriguing premise here that is slowly revealed and set up for further development/reveal in forthcoming volumes. It is a metaphysical and philosophical speculation on the nature of gods/demons/angels and belief and ritual, not to mention self-deception and exploitation in those beliefs and rituals, plus a dash of technology as magic and aliens as gods.
The book is fast paced and switches between multiple points of view and almost always involves scenes of direct action, particularly once past the initial introductory chapters. The entire book reads like a video game based on martial arts. The characters are very thinly sketched — the defining traits are how bad-ass are they in one-on-one combat and what is their particular slice of the noble+ pie (everyone is noble+stoic or noble+angry or noble+loyal or noble+unready or noble+grizzled or…… you get the picture)
I really enjoyed this book. It was different. A lot of books I read and I can just guess what is coming because it is so generic, but not with this book. The characters were awesome. It was really hard for me to pick a side because every character had likable qualities. Definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a good read. Can’t wait for the next one to come out!
I am really enjoying this book. It’s very put down. I wish there was a pronunciation breakdown for certain names and there are some typos but definitely worth reading.
I had seen this book listed for a while, but had a number of other books in my queue so kept putting it off. After finally getting to it, I was very impressed and wish i had gotten to it earlier! The characters were well developed, each with their own flaws. As a story, i loved that there was really no black and white, every character had their motivations which if you looked at it from their point of you, they seemed “in the right”. Now that I cant wait for the next book to come out!! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great fantasy story.
If you want a great read full of action, intrigue and suspense this is it. I thought this was going to be a good light fantasy read that would pass the time till I found something better. How wrong I was. This book has multiple layers and kept me hooked up to the last page. Can’t wait until the next book.
Great read, before I was halfway finished with this book I had already purchased the next book in this series. This book is 564 pages long and I read it in 3 days, I couldn’t put it down.
Although I generally lean more towards science fiction than fantasy, I am so glad that I took a chance on this one. My only disappointment was getting to the end, being ready to buy the next book and discovering that it wasn’t available yet! LOL The characters are well drawn, always important to me, and the story doesn’t give away to much of itself which keeps one truly drawn in.
The promotional copy is entirely correct: This is not a carbon copy fantasy novel, and the characters are complex. I think I read to page three and had to put the book down to digest what had just happened. I’ll grant you that there are dwarves and elves, but they are not clones of anyone elses; they’re organic to this world. And every character is refreshingly complex; every character takes action based on their individual knowledge, motiviations and predjudices. The plot emerges from the actions & motivations of the characters and the situation, not the other way around. The characters are also sympathetic; I care about what happens to them. Some of them I don’t like, but I sympathize with them, and I care about what happens next.
One other comment I’d make; the author is very clearly a martial artist; budo informs the entire novel, which I think improves the quality of the plotting. The author understands conflict and uses conflict to drive the plot. (He benefits by comparison with other martial artist authors). Budo doesn’t take center stage, but a practitioner of budo will appreciate the book a bit more than someone who lacks the expertise.
