In the world of Edyn, long-forgotten technology is considered magic. And when Edyn is threatened by demons for the first time in two centuries, it’s magic that will save it—or will it? The warrior-monk Silbane and his apprentice, Arek, have been ordered to investigate a gate which has opened under the ancient stronghold of Bara’cor. Arek has the unique ability to negate magic, and his master must … must use that power to save Edyn, pushing his apprentice through to close the rift between worlds. When Arek learns of the plot, he knows it will take everything he’s learned to survive. Eight days before the demon queen arrives… Arek dies. What will he do? What would you? Mythborn is an award-winning epic fantasy that takes you on a journey to save Edyn, and will make you question everything you think you know about technology, magic, good, and evil.

I love reading tolkein, heinlein, sun tzu, rommel, and also practicing martial arts… Mythborn delivers on all fronts!!! The story seems to me to be a instant epic in the making – as the author weaves a compelling tapestry of fantasy, sci-fi, military science, martial arts, and a double dose of adventure and mystery. Thank you!
Mythborn sucked me in right away with its intriguing fantasy setting and immediate martial arts action. Within two chapters the martial arts excitement and fantasy intrigue were matched by the hint of sci-fi and mystery that had me pouring over this book as quickly as I could. I am dying to read what happens next!
As a martial artist, and military history fan, I really liked the novel approach of guiding the reader through the action with interesting, relevant, and memorable quotes from military and martial arts disciplines. As tightly as this story was woven, I was surprised to find that this is the first major work written by the author, but I was not at all surprised when I read Mr Lakshman’s bio and saw that he was an accomplished martial artist – it showed, and in a very good and reinforcing way for the storyline.
If the author is reading these… please keep painting the picture of edyn and finish the next book, I’ll be reading it as soon as it comes out, and sharing it with my nephews and nieces too!
Thanks for a great adventure!
Wow, not what I expected. Had to get past the first 100 pages, but then it started to roll. Couldn’t put it down!
Summer reading for me… Yeh. All three books and nothing but time. Seems like these were re written or re-released as the first print was a few years ago. Well done – im onto the third book now and the charecters are well formed. I’m rooting for the bad guys most of the time.
I just happened across this book in browsing on amazon searching for books to fill the time between finishing sandersons “words of radiance” and waiting for ryans”tower lord”. Luck smiled on me because this is a truly great novel–now i find myself once again hoping the follow up “bane” (book 2 in series) comes out soon. Sigh–reading multi book epic series is a special kind of torture, akin to riding in the backseat as a child knowing we are driving to an amusement park but thinking time is playing a cruel joke and that we may never get there.
The book is excellent, with good pacing, solid solid characters who each follow their hearts and act only on what they know at the time. Very “real” characters. I loved the quotes from various sources as the beginning to each chapter… Even printed a few out and have them on my bulletin board at work as motivational type pieces. Much of the book involves a clearly deep understanding of unarmed combat which shows in excellently “visual” depictions of fights–this is hugely difficult to do well… Don’t believe me? Try it–write out a description of a fistfight/UFC style fight and see how it turns out! Not so easy… See?
Bottom line for every book and review is this–would you recommend others purchase and read this book… Yes! I highly recommend it, do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in this world!
Perhaps we all can train our bodies and minds and, a lucky few of us can gain the status to test for adept… How far will you push yourself to win… All the way? Really? Is your will that strong? …. Better be sure….
A great book- hard to believe that this is the debut novel for the VL. A complex story and a great magic system. Story which takes its origins from some of the oldest cultures around the world and no doubt well researched by the author. I always enjoy reading how a fight and combat is described. Will Wight did a great job in the House of Blades series, Robert Jordan of course is legendary in the Wheel of Time series and i enjoyed that aspect of the novel very much.
The story gradually unfolds, the characters get developed and there is enough complexity around the characters, their motivations and actions to keep it interesting. I highly recommend this book to fans of Fantasy Fiction lovers. You will not be dissapointed.
I’ve been reading Mythborn since I purchased it this morning and I can’t put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of engaging, and “smart” SciFi Fantasy. I noticed that V. Lakshman was also the creator of the “Elder Scrolls” hit video game series. Without a doubt, Mythborn would make a fantastic video game!
A classically high-fantasy styled novel that is a satisfying layered read full of battles and skirmishes, mages and wizards, dwarves and elves, dragons and royalty, and its own complex lore and magical systems, V. Lakshman’s “Mythborn: Rise of the Adepts” will leave dark fantasy enthusiasts clamoring for more.
After a powerful mage allowed a demon named Lilyth to enter the world of EDYN, causing a devastating war, King Galadine declares that all those with magical talent be put to death. For over two hundred years, mages have been hunted down and killed, except for a select few that escape and train to be adepts under the tutelage of the mage council.
Forced to keep themselves hidden, even the most powerful mages have lost the deepest knowledge of their craft, and their abilities are only a shadow of what the generations before were capable of. When it seems as though the demon Lilyth has begun to stir again, the council is ruthlessly determined to act.
Arek Winterthorn is an apprentice with a power that even he himself doesn’t understand. Unable to produce even the simplest of spells, he can disrupt the magic of others with a single touch. When his master, Silbane Petracles reluctantly agrees that Arek’s abilities might be the only way to save the world, the two embark on a journey full of twists, violence, intrigue, and even a dragon.
They seek the kingdom of Bara’cor, where the current King Galadine is under siege by a barbarian horde. Inside the castle walls, we are introduced to his court and advisers, including his teenage son and young niece, next in line to the throne of the neighboring kingdom. All of these diverse threads weave together as the characters clash, attempting to discover the true nature of the demonkind and the heart of the conflict two centuries ago.
Lakshman’s epic is told in several diverse voices from every side of the conflict, creating a complex web of loyalties and motivations. This leads to some initial confusion, as the reader is introduced to several different point of view characters in rapid succession. Flashbacks, integrated into the narrative under the heading “Histories,” are at first difficult to distinguish from the novel’s present day events. But after the narration settles into a pattern, fans of fantasy will be engrossed in his world and the envelopment of its familiar tropes. As the multi-faceted characters and their motivations are revealed, readers will come to care about what happens to them as they come to understand what motivates them.
Lakshman’s experience in the game industry and his martial arts background are evident in the novel’s many detailed battle scenes in this fast-action and complex fantasy. “The Rise of the Adepts”’ cliffhanger ending will leave readers clamoring for the next volume in this fast-paced and suspenseful “Mythborn” series, the sequel to which is now available.
I have been a producer for over 20 years and receive many offerings from agents and managers to review their client’s book to turn into a screen play/movie. Mythborn is truly a work of art and can see the project turned into a motion picture. Excellent story line and fascinating characters!
My agent gave this to me yesterday. So far, it’s a great book. Not much of a sci-fi guru, but seems there is massive potential.
You won’t be disappointed with this book. My son starting reading it, and can’t put it down. The other night while cleaning his room, I started reading it. The story line is makes you envision all the characters in your mind. This would make a great movie!
