Holy crap. Stunning. AMAZING. MY TORIN is one of the many examples why I love K. Webster’s works so, so much. They are always unique, edgy – unprecedented. I can always count on her to surprise the hell out of me. There’s only one thing I always know when it comes to her books: Nothing can ever prepare you for the ride you’re about to experience. It’s always emotional and unexpected and everything you never knew you wanted to read. The synopsis is always vague as all hell – and for a reason –, as will be my review. Trust me, best to go in utterly blind and experience the magnificence of the story in its entirety.
It was heartbreaking, sweet, painful and hopeful – beautiful and ugly, sad and happy – all at the same time, tearing your emotions in this direction and that. It’s a story so unconventional and risqué, with a topic so sensitive, that very few authors have dared to tackle it before. It’s not a “normal” romance story at ALL – it might even have you thinking “How the hell is this ever going to work?” at first, but trust me, it does work out – and it couldn’t be any more perfect! I’ve teared up a few times during reading, but the epilogue was the worst: The happy, grateful tears didn’t seem to want to disappear. It is beautifully written, with so much emotion behind the words, that it will leave you fiercely believing that there’s love for everyone, that it will find you wherever you hide – not only physically –, and that there’s nothing wrong in being different from the masses.
It’s a story that centers on only three people. Three troubled, slightly messed-up people, who some might even be calling misfits, but who stole my heart instantly after meeting them – all three of them. But one of them stands out: Torin. Oh, he is intense. Handsome. Thoughtful. Brave. Brilliant. Beautiful inside and out. But he’s also trapped in confines that you could never fathom to be stuck in yourself. Reading from his perspective was EVERYTHING. I love him, his turmoil, and his development. But mostly… just him. I’m totally and utterly smitten. He is perfect.
The cover. It couldn’t be more on-point. It’s a flawless image of the hero – the hoodie, the intense star, the handsome ruggedness and all. And combined with the penny… it couldn’t be more accurate. It represents everything the story is and more than deserves its own space on my physical bookshelf.
2018 might be still young, but I know for sure that this right here will be one of my top reads this year – if not ever. It’s well-researched, outside of the box, breaking barriers, crossing lines, and a story not easily being forgotten. A story that wrung me dry until I had nothing left to give. I don’t think there’s anything more needed to be said about it. Just pick it up and read it already!!
Gut wrenching, emotional and gorgeous story of love, family and acceptance!!
The story of Casey and Torin is a unique and rare passionate romance when all the odds are stacked against you. All they wanted was to fit in, be normal.
This story pulled at all my emotions as we saw the complex and complicated characters of Torin and Casey come to life as their story unfolded.
Beautiful Torin and Casey…
Two families from different walks of life, have no boundaries demonstrating what they would do for family.
How they do it to achieve that goal makes this thought provoking and eye opening story so worth the read.
Once again, the author pushes the boundaries about the extreme measures of human behavior. This time it’s to search within our souls and think about our definition of “normal.”
Of course it wouldn’t be a Kristi Webster novel if she didn’t inject her own twists and unconventional methods. That’s what makes this story so special. Then, to keep the reader on their toes, she throws a wrench that has you holding your breath in total shock as to what is going to happen next.
What lengths would we go through to fit in and find joy?
What are we willing to do for family if they have a handicapping condition?
Of course the methods seem unconventional but can it happen?… oh yes it can and that’s what makes the story of Torin and Casey so riveting!
4.5 stars!
K Webster has written some of my favorite books ever, and My Torin is going to go right on that list. It is a truly amazing story with all the layers that K generally puts into her books, as well as a love story that will burn the universe down.
Casey was left outside a church as an infant. She was abandoned in a manger, wrapped in a ratty blanket, and with a bag full of pennies sitting next to her. The man who found her contacted child services and she spent the next almost 18 years bouncing back and forth in between various foster homes, never having anything of her own and never having a family who loves her and whom she can love.
Tyler and Torin are brothers. They have been on their own together for several years now. Tyler is the older brother and does everything he can to take care of Torin, because Torin is autistic. One day, on the way to Torin’s doctor’s office, he picks up a penny on the ground, right before a young woman picked it up. He tried to give her the penny, but she has to get in a car and leave.
Of course, that young woman was Casey, and that chance meeting starts the romance that goes through this book.
This book spoke to me on so many levels. One is that I’m a mother of a son who is autistic. I feel really connected to the story because of that. K Webster was very careful in how she wrote Torin, so you don’t get all the stereotypes that show up when people talk about autistic people. So, I really appreciated that a lot. Secondly, the book spoke to me because of the love that Tyler and Torin have for each other as siblings, and how they are willing to just slide Casey into their love.
I can honestly say that this story is beautiful and moving and powerful. I had sad cries and happy cries because of this book. It was my first cry book of this year. I still feel the intense emotions from this book even days and days after reading it and I keep thinking on it. It’s going to be one of those books that sticks with people for a long, long, long time.
