The first book from Ruth Bader Ginsburg since becoming a Supreme Court Justice in 1993–a witty, engaging, serious, and playful collection of writings and speeches from the woman who has had a powerful and enduring influence on law, women’s rights, and popular culture. My Own Words offers Justice Ginsburg on wide-ranging topics, including gender equality, the workways of the Supreme Court, being … Supreme Court, being Jewish, law and lawyers in opera, and the value of looking beyond US shores when interpreting the US Constitution. Throughout her life Justice Ginsburg has been (and continues to be) a prolific writer and public speaker. This book’s sampling is selected by Justice Ginsburg and her authorized biographers Mary Hartnett and Wendy W. Williams. Justice Ginsburg has written an introduction to the book, and Hartnett and Williams introduce each chapter, giving biographical context and quotes gleaned from hundreds of interviews they have conducted. This is a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of America’s most influential women.more
There is no greater supporter of women and women’s rights and advancements than Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I’m so thankful for her and all the women who have devoted their lives to breaking through ancient thinking and fighting for desperately needed change. The audiobook, read by Linda Lavin, lets the reader hear directly from the Supreme Court Justice in her own words with speeches she’s given, some lighthearted, some legal opinions, all brilliantly written and delivered. The listener also gets to hear from her dear husband Marty on his favorite subject. This book has left me grateful and inspired. Highly recommended for both women and men alike.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s thoughts are front and center in My Own Words. This book is a good insight into her life. From the obstacles she overcame in a male dominated profession, to her family life, to her battles with cancer, she faced everything with determination and optimism. It also has a wonderful selection of speeches, writings, and accomplishments of this great lady. A wonderful book about an amazing woman.
I greatly enjoyed getting a glimpse into the life and work of the venerable Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in this book. I don’t have a deep understanding of how the court system in the United States works, but I learned a lot as I made my way through. With a fierce devotion to equal rights, Justice Ginsburg is a beacon of hope for women and girls across the globe. It’s obvious our country still has a long way to go in equalizing the roles of men and women, but thanks to Justice Ginsburg, we are moving in the right direction.
I recommend this book for readers who enjoy nonfiction, autobiographies, and learning more out the American judicial system.
This collection of writing and speeches by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg provides insights into this fiercely intelligent woman’s drive and thinking in the world of the US Supreme Court. Some of it isn’t easy to read or understand, unless you are in the legal profession, but throughout the variety of opinions, introductions, summaries and dissents runs the sure knowledge that RBG was a brilliant jurist, and a justice with a very strong social conscience. Working towards changing laws ‘one case at a time’, she provided insightful interpretations of the laws, always with the understanding that the law must take account of reality, and changing times and needs.
Not a quick read, but worth persevering.
This was a spectacular audiobook. It gave me a great appreciation for Ruth Bader Ginsburg and all she has done for me as a woman. She was so dedicated to the rights of all people, especially those who had struggled to gain those rights. I enjoyed the audiobook especially due to the numerous excerpts in Ruth’s own voice, taken from various public speaking events. I have always been in awe of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but I have an even higher respect for her after listening to her book. I would highly recommend!
This book details aspects of RBG’s life and legal cases in which she fought to secure equal rights for women (and men). She was a phenomenal lawyer and Justice and a remarkable woman. We owe her so much. May she rest in peace.
Not quite what I was expecting — but still amazing because … RBG!
It was interesting but not riveting! However, RBG herself IS riveting and wonderful!!
This is a collection of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s writings, lectures, and presentations during her decades long endeavor to advance women’s (human) rights. Is there any one of us, male or female, who is not in her debt?
This book teaches us about the Supreme Court and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her speeches and bench announcements are given in her words, so we can understand how she transmits what she decides. I had little idea of the workings of the Supreme Court and the US court system–this book gave me many learning opportunities. This is not a boring, historical page-filler but a moving, exciting record of history and of the efforts to get equality and more for women.
