No ordinary hero indeed, just a loving big brother trying to fix the mess his younger brothers made. No, kidnapping the sister of the duke is not going to improve things for the Clan.
Marjorie, of course, was not always the sister of a duke. He inherited after the siblings were grown and she is having a difficult transition to Lady of the Ton. She decides to leave London behind and head to Scotland to her brother’s wedding. She doesn’t make it; instead, three ruffians kidnap her. Their brother, Graeme, is in a dispute with the duke and these boys think having Marjorie as a bargaining chip will help them.
Graeme understands that’s not the case and has to figure his way out of what could be a disaster. In the meantime, what to do with his beautiful prisoner (chain her to a bed?)
As kidnappings go, this is a light-hearted one. She is no wilting violet and the interactions between the H/h make for fun reading. The resolution is all that romance lovers could want, and their HEA is as sweet as the journey is enjoyable. A winner! (I received an eARC from NetGalley. This is my honest opinion.
Lady Marjorie Forrester is being ignored in London, she had more acknowledgement when she was a lady’s companion but since her brother Gabriel unexpectedly became the Duke of Lattimer she’s been ostracised. She receives a letter from Gabriel saying he’s getting married so Marjorie decided to surprise him & head to Scotland for the wedding, accompanied by Mrs Hortensia Giswell her companion. Rugged Highlander Graeme Maxton’s loyalty to his clan means that their enemies are his own even when that includes his neighbour, the Duke of Lattimer. It’s a fight he doesn’t relish, but when Graeme’s reckless younger brothers Brendan & Dughlas foolishly kidnap Lattimer’s younger sister, all bets are off.
Lady Marjorie Forrester may be aligned with the enemy, but capturing her puts Graeme squarely in the middle of a war. If he turns Marjorie over to his clan chief she could be killed. If he lets her go, his brothers could face prison or be hung. Graeme keeps Ree locked in a bedroom & even shackles her. However he binds the shackle so it won’t bruise her leg, which proves to be a mistake as by unravelling the binding she’s able to free herself. Only to walk into Graeme’s uncle Raibeart & the Duke of Dunncraigh’s right hand man Hamish Paulk, Ree saves the day by saying she is the tutor to Connell.
I found this to be a fun book to read, yes parts of it were implausible but it’s fiction. Graeme was so endearing trying his best for his brothers & then having to sort out their messes. Ree was also very likeable, no swooning debutante. The interaction between the pair had me laughing at times, there was an attraction between the pair from the start but they fought it as how could a captor be attracted to his Sassenach captive & vice versa how could a captive gently brought up lady be attracted to a wild highlander. The answer in both cases is very easily. Connell of course stole the book, an adorable eight year old who had a menagerie of animals he’d rescued.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book
My One Tue Highlander is the second book in the No Ordinary Hero Series by Suzanne Enoch. The story introduces Lady Marjorie Forrester who is the sister of the Duke of Lattimer (the Hero in the first book in the series). These siblings were not of the aristocracy but inheritance enabled them to gain unexpected titles that changed their lives.
Graeme Maxton who is a viscount raising mischievous brothers who wind up kidnapping Lady Marjorie and create problems for Maxton and Lattimer. Held captive in a dilapidated castle she become attracted to Graeme as he to her. They start off enemies and soon lovers. The both have baggage from their past that shapes their personalities. They are a nice couple and as the books progresses you can see the care and love that grows between them.
I liked this one a bit better than the first. Enoch wrote an absolutely wonderful story and it was a very good listen for me. Again, narrated by Flora McDonald who I think did a very good job with her narration of the characters.
