It was a strange story. At times I found it disturbing and unsettling.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was an extremely satisfying read with enough things going on with the plot to hold my interest throughout the story.
Captivating, mysterious, and cunning!
My Name is Eva is an intense, affecting tale that immerses you into the life of Evelyn Taylor-Clarke as she spends her final days remembering loves lost, sacrifices made, and secrets long buried.
The prose is descriptive and insightful. The characters are anguished, resilient, and clever. And the plot using a past-present, back-and-forth style and using a unique mixture of narrative, letters, and crosswords unravels quickly into a tale of life, love, loss, family, friendship, injustice, guilt, self-identity, war, bravery, and survival.
Overall, My Name is Eva is a compelling, touching, haunting debut by Goldring that highlights the inconceivable hardships, suffering, and horrors endured during wartime and reminds us that revenge is always best served cold.
An interesting tale of one woman’s life during the war and the secrets she kept all those years.
The story began in 2016 and proved to be most unusual. Eva/ Evelyn is a ninety-year-old woman that likes to pull the wool over her cousin’s eyes. Though her mind was sharp as the pencils she kept close she made everyone believed that she was, in fact, losing it. Inwardly she had so much fun with all that you could not help but smile at the schemes she pulled.
A story that tells the other side of the war’s devastation. It tells about the turmoil of the Polish people to be reunited with their country. The brutal interrogations to find the quilty people and the hate for one man that kept her on high alert.
Through it all, you could not help but appreciate her independence, her love for her estate and flowers and the need for sharp pencils. It shows so much about this woman that walked alone after her husband passed away during the war. And it tells of her unforgettable love towards Hugh who was with her till the end. A love story with a twist as you get to know the woman and her secrets and the lengths she went through to cover it up.
From the beginning I was hooked by an old woman pretending she had cognitive issues all the while sharp as a tack and the story that led back to World War II and a love story that led to creative revenge.
As one who could be in an “extended care” facility I could empathize with the main character. I’m impressed! I’ve been in England in 1960-61 & then again in the 80’s and recently. How different the perspectives of people who went through WW 2, Real shortages, bombing and personal loss to those living now. The author catches this very well. It ended well — surprise, surprise — but maybe not. I enjoyed it.
Interesting twists and turns. Had some beautiful descriptions.
I enjoyed that it wove real history into the story.
For me, it was very dark, not my favorite type of book. It was engaging, however, clearly enough to get me to finish it in spite of my aversion to suffering and tragedy.
Story about an English WWII woman who joins the war effort in Germany. She now is old and in a nursing home – starts to remember her adventures for her niece and later for an Inspector. Cleverly written to hide the real truths of what actually happenned.
Great book!!
Interesting page turner. Got a little lost sometimes as the time travel chapters vascillated back and forth. Good psychological read as Evelyn managed to get folks to believe she was “losing her mind” but all the while she was calculating her story so as not to give away her guilt.
This book was full of twists and turns, but I wasn’t expecting the ending! You’ll want to read this book!
The part of history I’m fascinated by, WW 2 and stories of the impacted ‘regular’ people
A mist read from page one !!
This was a different WWII story. But, very realistic. A woman caught in some difficult situations and handles them heroically.
I enjoyed the character of Eva and admired her courage throughout her life.
I am currently reading this one. It has me intrigued. I can’t wait to continue reading it.
Full of twists and turns around WW2, Europe, Germany and the consequences of war and hatred. Also, deals with mans inhumanity when making decisions on other people’s lives.
