A heartfelt memoir from one of Hollywood’s greatest iconsDick Van Dyke, indisputably one of the greats of the golden age of television, is admired and beloved by audiences the world over for his beaming smile, his physical dexterity, his impeccable comic timing, his ridiculous stunts, and his unforgettable screen roles. His trailblazing television program, The Dick Van Dyke Show (produced by … Van Dyke Show (produced by Carl Reiner, who has written the foreword to this memoir), was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s and introduced another major television star, Mary Tyler Moore. But Dick Van Dyke was also an enormously engaging movie star whose films, including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, have been discovered by a new generation of fans and are as beloved today as they were when they first appeared.
A colorful, loving, richly detailed look at the decades of a multilayered life, My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business, will enthrall every generation of reader, from baby-boomers who recall when Rob Petrie became a household name, to all those still enchanted by Bert’s “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” This is a lively, heartwarming memoir of a performer who still thinks of himself as a “simple song-and-dance man,” but who is, in every sense of the word, a classic entertainer.

If you like Dick Van Dyke this is a must read. If you don’t; WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! Lol. I read this as a fan of the actor and came away as a even bigger fan of the man himself. A,very good read.
I LOVED reading about Dick Van Dyke. He was always a favorite of mine and I so enjoyed reading about his life. Great story.
Marry Poppins. The Dick Van Dyke show. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! Diagnosis Murder. These were all favorites of mine growing up (and still are) and the common thread? Dick Van Dyke. I always liked him as an actor and was pleased to find that he worked hard his whole life to live a life he—and his children—could be proud of. This memoir details …
I enjoyed seeing his viewpoint in his career and it was refreshing to read a biography that was not full of salacious stories. Uplifting to see someone stick to his principles
Informative and enjoyable Dick Van Dyke told of the good times in his life and did not dwell on the bad times
As a novelist, I enjoy reading autobiographies and memoirs that help me learn about characters in depth, and as I’ve loved Dick Van Dyke since seeing him in Mary Poppins as a child, I was keen to read this one. He comes across as just the affable kind of chap that you’d expect, and it’s interesting to see how his career developed from unremarkable …
The book makes you realize he is a real person with real life issues, not just a character in a movie. It touches all of your emotions and makes you love him more.
I’ve always been a fan of Dick Van Dyke. Read this book in a day. So interesting.
If you love Dick Van Dyke then you are in for a treat. If nothing else this is a story to make you believe that following your dream can be worth it even with the pitfalls and mistakes along the way. Just get out there, believe in yourself, and so it!!
Meh. He’s a better dancer and actor than he is writer. I think I came away liking him less than I liked him as Rob Petrie.
If you like Dick Van Dyke you will like the book.
Not much pace. Just a personal perspective on a time in TV history.
I love Dick Van Dyke and when I read it, it was like he was talking to me. I thought it was very much in his words and found it interesting. I have read other reviews about it not as good but i enjoyed it. I guess read it and decide for yourself. I will say, my daughter read it too when she was about 17 as she loves Dick Van Dyke show and …
Dick van dyke is a delightful performer. Not so much as a writer. Some good stories, but not nearly as many as his long career would suggest that he might have to share.
I liked this book very much. Dick Van Dyke had always been one of my favorites, and the book is a lot like him: charming, interesting, unpretentious, and honest without giving me TMI.
I enjoyed reading this book immensely. I admire Dick Van Dyke even more than before after reading it. He was truly funny in his TV shows and movies, and I love comedies such as the Dick Van Dyke show. I especially admire him for insisting on doing movies and TV shows that he would feel comfortable watching with his children.
I have always enjoyed watching Dick Van Dyke. It’s great to know that he really is a nice guy and has stayed true to himself
I enjoyed Dick Van Dyke sharing his own story.
I just adore Dick Van Dyke and found reading about his life interesting. Some of it was sad, most of it was humorous .
Interesting biography of a beloved comedian
This book was wonderful. He told his story without saying negative things about other people or using questionable language. He was honest about himself. He isn’t perfect by any means! Parts of the story was funny, while other parts were more serious. It is appropriate for any age to read.
