Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting…
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

I enjoyed this book very much. It’s diabolical, twisted, and disturbing. I could not put this book down. My fingers could not stop turning those pages – you just have to know what happens next!
The writing was brilliant and creative, not like what I have read before and that made this book entertaining and mind bending.
I highly recommend this debut novel from Samantha Downing, an amazing writer to watch for.
This book! This BOOK! Evil, deranged, unhinged. And I loved every single disturbing page.
This book was written in the first person, from the husband’s perspective… I don’t think the husband’s name is ever identified. But that being said, this book is about the husband, and his wife Millicent and their “killing spree”. This book had a good twist I didn’t see coming until the moment the husband figured it out. I look forward to reading the next book by this author.
This was a pretty strange, messed up ride. Millicent and the unnamed husband telling the story for us spice up their 15-year marriage by abducting and killing women. Our narrator assumes Millicent has killed and disposed of these women, but he learns she has kept these women for long periods of time and has been torturing them before finally killing them. The side story is this couple’s attempts to blame the killings on a long-gone serial killer. The tension is present throughout this book, but nothing compares to the final chapters. The last quarter of the book we learn so, so much disturbing information about Millicent. The final paragraph left me hanging with my mouth open. My four stars are only because years later, life is as described? For you to decide…..
My Lovely Wife
I hated the book, and yet couldn’t put it down. The characters were all hideous, the perfect family unit. A husband and wife, two children, a san and daughter living in a suburban dream. The story kind of slow in the beginning, well everything was ordinary real life daily stuff for a while. Things didn’t stay normal very long, things got weirder and weirder as these characters developed their tastes. I thought I knew, I did, till the end then I suffered whiplash. Holy Shiitake what a story.
Thank you to the publishers for honoring me with a copy of this book for an honest review
Oh what a twisted and all around messed up book. This mystery is in no way perfect, but I will honestly tell you that I don’t care because I really ended up enjoying this book. Don’t get me wrong, I suspected the entire twist all along, but I really didn’t mind.
This book is told from the poc of the husband. He is an unreliable narrator and is no way innocent. He was willing to stalk women to find the next person he and his wife wanted to murder. The entire reason for them deciding to murder people is stupid. No one decides to spice up their marriage by murdering innocent young women. This couple is batshit crazy. I don’t feel sorry for any of them. The husband is so dumb that its not even funny. Things were clicking into place for him, but he chose to ignore them for no good reason.
The end was really good. It was crazy and meticulous in its plotting. I think Samantha Downing does a great job grabbing the reader from the first sentence to the very end. This book is not perfect and I can find all types of holes and conveniences. But I really don’t care because I was entertained by this mystery and how swept up I got in the story. Its definitely worth giving a try.
Sigh.
Totally bowled over. Speechless.
You just HAVE to read it.
Suspenseful and surprising. A frighteningly fun read.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I wondered if Millicent was off her rocker during the whole book. She was so calm and collected. I did figure out most of the twists before they happened so that is why it is a 4 star for me. I really did love this book though. I loved that it was told from a male POV. We don’t see that a lot and it is refreshing to me. Not many of the people in the book weren’t messed up, so there is that. I loved that aspect too, but I’m not sure what that says about me.
Twisted, twisted, twisted!
This couple wants to spice up their marriage, so they discuss how to murder people and that puts a thrill into their sex life.
Millicent and her husband / country club tennis lesson coach get excited about killing women. But, they want to make it look like someone else is responsible. So, they set up an elaborate system to choose and capture women, but the husband is disappointed when they can’t do the murder together. Millicent tells him not to worry, she is handling it.
However, there is a bit of unease throughout the book, and things are happening which don’t seem to be in line with what should be. Therefore, it was relatively easy for me to figure out what the big reveal was going to be.

It was an okay read. The storyline got a little drab. Did not hold my attention sadly.
This is a dark and twisty thriller. I loved it!
Twists you don’t expect. For me there were spots that were slow but it was very worth finishing.
When a psychopath marries a psychopath and they get bored, WATCH OUT!!
Samantha Downing has written one twisty, rollercoaster of a dark, demented read! Told from the never-named husband’s viewpoint, you will be amazed at how calmly this couple plans kidnappings and murders. They act like a normal couple, are raising two teenagers in a nice neighborhood, nothing appears suspicious at all. And yet they have this “hobby”.
Surprising until the very last page, this is a psychological thriller you won’t want to miss!
Many thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Strange story
This was definitely a disturbing novel, maybe a little too much for me. There really wasn’t a character in this novel that I found remotely likeable, which, I believe is the author’s purpose, and she did a great job at that. I am not sure what made it too much for me, but it could possibly be that I had to decide between several characters with no real redeeming qualities, when usually I have one with at least something to like about him or her.
No gore, but much implied. It will be a great read for many, but it actually gave me a few nightmares.
