I purchased this as part of a 2 author bundle called DARK DECEPTION.
This is a dark story that filled me with so much emotion that my heart ached. I must admit part of the story I didn’t care for the h. She knew the H was in love with another women and she let him have certain liberties, shall we say. Plus, she withheld information on who she was. I didn’t like she didn’t admit this information prior to her wedding the H. But, as the story unfolds, I warmed to her and understood she just wanted someone to love and care for her.
This story has so many elements to it that I was worn out reading it – in a good way. This author wrung every drop of feelings from me. This story is very suspenseful, has the h being beaten multiple times by either her father or another (not the H) Also, a lot of mental abuse beside physical abuse so be warned. It made the h so strong and caring.
She tried to tell the H who she was (after they were married) and he stopped her. I wanted the h to remind the H she did try to inform him and he wouldn’t listen. Just a small thing I wanted her to bring up. I also, wanted the H to confess what the h witnessed with his former love, he was innocent in, but that didn’t happen either.
Actual lovemaking within marriage heat level 5 out of 5 and described several times.
No really cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, some romance and steam. (ljb)
A spy story in early 19th century – Irish Rebellion. It was captivating intrigue of events that I could not put down. Georgina Wilcox is the only child of the traitor known as “The Fox” with his adopted son Jamie called “The Hunter”. Georgina is a 20 year old young woman, wise beyond her years, and an English patriot. She is treated as a servant and has endured the physical abuse of both father and “brother” since childhood, but remains faithful to her ideals. She tries to help those Englishmen her father captures and tortures for information to help Ireland – at physical cost to herself. Then she meets Adam Markham, a member of the secret ton society called THE BRETHREN. He is the younger brother of the Earl of Whitehaven, but even his family is ignorant of his involvement. Georgina does the one thing she should never do – she falls hopelessly in love with Adam – even though he tells her his heart belongs to another and always will. In spite of this, they are thrown together as her father wants her to get information. But when the opportunity arises, she helps Adam escape with help from his fellow Brethren. But her father catches her and almost leaves her for dead. She is rescued by the Brethren and fate brings her face to face with Adam months later. Georgina tries many times to explain to Adam why she lied and told him she was a maid and not the daughter of the man who tortured him. But the allure of happiness with the man she loves wins out. Right after their marriage, the damaging news is brought to Adam – and he feels betrayed and anger. What ensues are incidents after incidents of humiliation and pain of an innocent young woman who was never the product of her blood, but true to her ideals and heart. She never turns against Adam as he did against her. Her life knew so little joy and she grabbed what she could when it was offered. Her loyalty and faithfulness to both country and the man she adores is unique! Wonderful emotional story during a restless time in history – with all the honor and glory and admiration to this one young woman who lived her life on her terms!! Thank you Ms Caldwell for the inspiration of not letting anything or anyone define who we wish to be!!
This is one of my favorite books. Caldwell has written a masterpiece that I couldn’t put down. I absolutely adore the heroine in this story. Georgina Wilcox is an amazing character. I loved her kindness and fortitude and her expressive nature. Truly one of my favorite characters written by any author. Adam Markham is a very believable hero. His thoughts and actions stay consistent throughout. I loved the layers the story. It’s not just about boy meeting girl, boy and girl fall in love..the story goes deeper than that. Conflicts arise within each character as well as around them that they must face and overcome. Overall one of the best novels by Caldwell in my estimation.
I really enjoyed this book. The plotting was excellent. It has some steamy scenes that I skipped. The characters were fleshed out well. There was intigue, romance and wonderful characters. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I rate this book as bad because it made me feel horrible. The interactions between the two main characters was heartbreaking and not in a good way. The hero especially became hurtful and even petulant. And the ending hardly fostered the idea that they had both come through their struggles to be better people. I was expecting a longer struggle and more difficult obstacle for them in the end, something that would really bring about the changes in their hearts that was needed. The characters in the secret agency also bothered me and seemed inaccurate. Overall not a very feel good read. I’ll not be reading more from this series even though I’ve enjoyed quite a few of this author’s books.
